Wed-Mon 11-16 May ULTRA-TRAIL AUSTRALIA (NSW)
A five-day trail running festival of unprecedented scope. Previously branded as The North Face 100 and The North Face 50, the existing 100km and 50km events, already established as the southern hemisphere;s largest trail races, are now subsumed under the Ultra-Trail Australia brand. From May 11 - May 16, 2016, Katoomba, NSW, will play host to over 4000 athletes, spectators and support crew, converging for a five-day trail running extravaganza. Sat-Sun 21-22 May YMCA OF CANBERRA RUNNERS CLUB HALF MARATHON
For many years the Half Marathon weekend has been a major annual event in the calendars of YCRC members and other local and interstate runners and the tradition continues. Mark off the weekend of the 21st/22nd May in your calendars for the 2016 Half Marathon weekend! Saturday 21st May offers social runners and families a chance to compete in shorter runs including a 1.6k Mini Jog and a 5k Fun Run, and Sunday 22nd May is the day of the Half Marathon. Rex Foulkes, in whose memory this event is named, was a local distance runner, who died in a road accident returning to Cooma from Canberra after a race in 1970. The first Rex Foulkes Half Marathon held on 13th September 1970 had just 24 finishers. A trail running "taster" at Canberra's original family playground, the Cotter. The Series starts with a moderate-grade 5km course (the 10km completes 2 laps) comprising a paved loop on the "Cotter Dam Discovery Trail" in the shadow of Cotter Dam, followed by a contrasting loop on walking tracks and fire trails with a river crossing, a hill and a sandy beach – a bit of everything. Park at the end of the Cotter Bend picnic area, off Cotter Rd. The Tough Bloke Challenge is open to men and women who wish to confront a hellish assault course in a test of strength and endurance. Reputed to be one of the most gruelling adventure runs found anywhere in Australia, you will brave 25+ hair-raising obstacles over a cross-country course laden with thick mud-pits and ice-cold water crossings. Expect muscle-burning obstacles, mud trenches covered with barbed wire, and damp, dark concrete tunnels. Amongst other challenges, the ultimate hurdle, aptly named ‘Hells Gate’, is the one feared by most and comes with tales of rope burns at nerve-racking heights. Designed for the weekend warrior this is running at its toughest. Take it seriously, or not (some opt to walk the entire course), the event promises to be a fun day out for all. The Sri Chinmoy Canberrra Trail Series heads to Tuggeranong for a varied exploration of the Murrumbidgee Corridor. Barely minutes from the Town Centre, you'll think you were miles from anywhere as you wend your way northward through bushland, and return along the riverside walking track. The 8km course loops around at Tuggeranong Creek, while the 20km goes as far as Kambah Pool before heading south. Parking is at Pine Island North picnic area, at the end of Pine Island Rd, Tuggeranong. On-the-day registration opens at 9am and closes at 9.45am, with races starting at 10am. The Bravehearts 777 Marathon Series is being held again in 2016 around Australia. This is an event like no other and sees participants run 7 marathons, across 7 states in 7 days. Our inspirational athletes run close to 300kms in one week and in the process raise money for Bravehearts to help educate, empower and protect Aussie Kids against sexual assault. Led by three-time Uncle Toby's Ironman Series winner, Guy Andrews, this event is not just for the fitness fanatic but those up for an amazing challenge. Taking on this heart-pounding adventure sees participants run marathons in Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Hobart, Canberra, Kingscliff and the Gold Coast. Canberra's north side hosts the Series finale. The track from Hall through to Oak Hill along Gungahlin's northern fringing ridge is the Rolls Royce of Canberra Trails. Especially commissioned for the Centenary Trail project, this beautifully sculptured track is a work of art, a trail to fall in love with… To fully appreciate the varying vistas in each direction, you really need to run this wonderful track both ways. Starting and finishing at Hall's historic Showground, both courses ascend to the summit of One Tree Hill, from where the 30km continues following the ACT/NSW border.
