Wed-Thu 6-7 May DARKNESS TO DAYLIGHT CHALLENGE
Law firm Minter Ellison is challenging all of us to get involved in running, walking or volunteering at the 110km Darkness to Daylight Challenge to speak out against domestic violence. With 110 women, children and men dying because of this silent epidemic every year, we will make a difference on 6 and 7 May by raising awareness and funds for domestic violence prevention. There are many options on how to participate by volunteering to marshal the event, walking or running as far as possible, relaying the distance as a team, running the last 10km or walking the final 3km. Since it's inception the Wide Bay Australia Ring Road Run has grown from a 5km run/walk to now include 10km, 2km kids dash and a 10km wheelchair race. Take a step to feed a family in need! Hunger is not just a third world issue: 1.2 million Australians experience food insecurity, 1 in 4 South East Qld households can't afford basic groceries, and 50,000 children in Brisbane go without food. Nexus Care is passionate about making a difference to these statistics in our local community through the Fresh Start Food Program. Every month, Nexus Care provides approx 9,000 meals through our food relief program, which is equal to over 108,000 meals per year! Every week, Nexus Care supports four schools with fun, healthy school breakfast programs. Every fortnight, Nexus Care runs cooking classes to help empower people experiencing hardship with the skills to cook healthy, cheap meals for themselves and their families. By being a part of the Fresh-Startathon, you can help Nexus Care support more individuals and families in our Brisbane community with nutritious food and empower people with the knowledge and skills to provide healthy meals for their families. Sun 31 May BRISBANE KOKODA CHALLENGE
In honour of the Kokoda Spirit, this 30km (or 15km) event winds through some of Brisbane;s toughest terrain. Teams of two, three and four will find the course is not without toils - ensuring that you don't forget the meaning of endurance before arriving at the finish line. If you want to test your fitness or make sure that your training is on track for the 96km Kokoda Challenge on the Gold Coast, this event is for you! The Junior Kokoda Challenge requires a teacher/guardian to join as a member of a five person team to compete. Whilst training for and during the event, students are both physically and emotionally fatigued and their leaders must develop new strategies to motivate and keep their group going. But there is nothing to beat the feeling of satisfaction that comes from setting a goal and achieving that goal against all odds. The Gold Coast Airport Marathon is held annually in one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world. It is Australia's premier road race and holds an International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Road Race Gold Label. Sat-Sun 18-19 Jul THE KOKODA CHALLENGE - GOLD COAST
The Kokoda Challenge on the Gold Coast is hailed as Australia's toughest endurance event. It is a gruelling cross country, 4-person team event held over 96km, with a time limit for completion of 39 hours. There is good reason for this distance- 96km is the length of the actual Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea. The goal for participants (with the help of their Support Crew) is to finish as a complete team of four in honour of the spirit forged on the Kokoda Track in 1942: mateship, endurance, courage and sacrifice. Regardless of fitness level, people from all walks of life find participating in The Kokoda Challenge a great personal achievement and a way to help local teenagers gain a brighter future for themselves and their families through the Kokoda Challenge Youth Program (KCYP). Sun 1 Nov GREAT BARRIER REEF MARATHON FESTIVAL
The Great Barrier Reef Marathon Festival is on November 1st in Port Douglas. The 74km JCU Ultra Marathon now begins on Four Mile Beach, journeys out into Mowbray Valley, heading up the infamous "Bump Track" and then turning left onto Black Mountain Road to tackle the stunning trails of Twin Bridges. This is one epic challenge and a seriously challenging event. Not for the faint hearted either, the 42.195km Steve Moneghetti Marathon follows a similar course with the inclusion of the Bump Track, but with first a loop through the pristine valley of Spring Creek before heading for the infamous climb. This event turns around at the top of the track and heads back into Port Douglas along the palm tree lined streets of Port Douglas - an adventure marathon like no other! There is also the 21.1km Sheraton Mirage Resort Port Douglas Half Marathon which also begins on the beach and the 10km Newsport Daily run, a hot lap around the township of Port Douglas from the beach to suburbia, through hidden trails and back along the palm tree lined streets. Also on offer for those preferring a more 'fun run' approach is the 5km Port Douglas Fundy 5000 and the 2.5km Coles Junior Challenge.
