The Island Charity Swim is a test of endurance for the participants and a major fundraiser for the amazing and inspirational children at the Nambour and Currimundi Special schools. It is a unique challenge, not only for a very worthy cause but its completion guarantees your inclusion in swimming folklore, an exclusive club reserved for those who meet the sponsorship requirements and complete the course. The 3 Marathons in 3 Days is a staged trail race in the tropical rainforsets of Far North Queensland. It is run over three consecutive days over three different courses. This is the sixth year of the race that is held on the Atherton Tablelands. There are two other events on the same weekend and over the same course, but with varying distances. The 96km Kokoda Challenge, proudly supported by Condev Construction, will once again be coming to the Gold Coast in 2017, with registrations opening 1 September 2016. Sat-Sun 5-6 Aug LAMINGTON ECO CHALLENGE
Can you do your chosen event twice? 42 kms 21 kms or 8.5 km Fara trail fun run The Lamington Eco Challenge is a trail running event featuring some tough terrain in the Scenic Rim Hinterland in South East Queensland, including four wheel drive tracks, grassy paddocks, bush and a couple of hills as well as having to negotiate creeks, gates, cattle grids and the potential wandering livestock. What makes this event very different is that it plays out over two days; you get to sleep the night in a cozy warm bed. Sun 6 Aug MCDONALD'S TOWNSVILLE RUNNING FESTIVAL
Challenge and Hero Run. Their AIMS accredited courses are fast, flat and hug the coastline as well as feature the 43rd Townsville Marathon - Australia's second oldest race. All runners experience spectacular views of the Coral Sea, Magnetic Island and the Marina as they follow their tropical blue line and vie for AUD23,000 prize money. With a predawn start marathoners experience a breath taking sunrise over Cleveland Bay as they run along Townsville's award-winning Strand Beach. Sun 20 Aug 64KM KURANDA TO PORT DOUGLAS ULTRA TRAIL RACE AND RELAY; 16KM BUMP TO BEACH
This 64 kilometre point-to-point race is incorporated in the Mowbray National Park within the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. Teams of 2-4 runners can also complete the full course. It starts just off Kennedy Highway in Kuranda and follows Black Mountain Road through native rainforest, open eucalyptus forest, pine plantations and over picturesque creeks. There is a shorter 16 kilometre race on the same day, starting at the top of the Bump on Black Mountain Road. The finish is on Four Mile Beach, Port Douglas. The tropical rainforest is home to the endangered southern cassowary, a flightless bird that can grow to two metres in height - you might see one! Early Bird entries end at 9.00pm on 25 May. Sun 20 Aug 7 SUNSHINE COAST MARATHON
Located on the stunning Sunshine Coast, Queensland near the barrier reef and Steve Irwin's iconic Australia Zoo, this not-for-profit event has been timed to make the most of the ideal Queensland winter running conditions. Blue skies, low humidity and mild temperatures - combined with a flat course always enable fast times. The course record currently stands at 2:18:30 set by Ethiopian, Samuel Woldemanuel in 2015. Event distances include the Marathon, Half Marathon, 10km, 5km and the 2km. Each road race follows the stunning coastline of Alexandra Headlands with white sandy beaches and spectacular vantage points alongside the ocean. The Half Marathon is a one loop course with Marathon entrants completing a multi loop course (1 x 21km + 2 x 10.5km) making the most of the on-course entertainment and crowds of spectators before a red carpet 'hero' finish. With a distance to suit every ability and age group, this community-focused, world-class athletic event caters to all those wanting to take part, including families and those with both physical and intellectual disabilities. The 2km event allows parents with prams and wheelchair entrants to take part and enjoy the festival atmosphere.
