Shane Nankervis and Liz Miller stepped up to new levels in yesterday's Chicago Marathon.
Both were competing in the Chicago race as prize winners from the 2002 New Balance Canberra Marathon.
Nankervis, of Ballarat, ran 2.17.18 in only his second marathon, a four minute improvement on his Canberra time. Miller, of Sydney, was also running her second marathon and improved over 12 minutes to run 2.36.56.
Miller was 11th behind the UK's Paula Radcliffe, who set a new world best of 2.17.18.
Nankervis is now the fifth fastest Australian for the year, behind Andrew Letherby, Rod de Highden, Lee Troop and Richard Gleisner.
Miller is the fourth fastest female behind the Commonwealth Games medallists Kerryn McCann, Krishna Stanton and Jackie Gallagher.
One of the promotional angles of the Canberra Marathon is "win Canberra, go to Chicago and race with the world's best, and step up to the next level in your career".
Race director Dave Cundy is delighted that this strategy has worked again in 2002.
The 2003 New Balance Canberra Marathon will be held on Sunday 13 April and will again offer prizes to the Chicago Marathon for the first Australian or NZ male and female.
