Nyangelo wins City to Surf10th August 2003
Victorian runner Haley McGregor was the first woman across the finish line in this years City to Surf in Sydney in a time of 47:28 minutes. Jackie Gallagher, from the ACT, came in second, with Kate Seibold-Crosbie from Victoria third.
McGregor says the atmosphere of the crowd lifted her spirits and almost brought her undone. "I had a bit of a scare, I went out pretty quick in the first five (kilometres)," she said. "And oh no, I talked up Heartbreak Hill and said it wasn't too bad but I paid for it today. Someone heard me up there and I found it pretty tough."
Tanzanian runner Patrick Nyangelo claimed line honours in 41:55 minutes in the men's race. He was fresh off his victory in last weekend's Bridge to Brisbane run.
It is the sixth straight year an overseas runner has won the race.
More than 58,000 people took part in the event.
