Fear & Loathing on Sydney's Beaches - 10th February 2001

Race Report

by Sid Hewgill

I ran with John Searl and after 20 minutes we both thought we were in for a tough day. I couldn't believe the humidity of the Barrenjoey lighthouse loop. And then I couldn't believe all the sand. We considered road running prior to the commencement of the event because we didn't believe the maps. However, on the day, and because there were other maddies attempting it, we ran sand. We stuck to the course except for Narrabeen beach ( we ran along the road ) and managed to short the Dee Why Head Rec Reserve, or at least we thought we must have because we trailed the Fearsome Foursome of Jan, Thomas, Dave, and Lawrence onto the Bicentenary track but lead them onto North Curl Curl Beach. We had run past the Manly Corso and decided enough was enough and piked it down to the Wharf just a shade over 5hours.

3 hours later I'm watching the Swans play the Bombers at North Sydney Oval and feeling pretty pleased with my achievement. Another 6hours and whammo - I am hit with the big flu like symptoms of a body in overload. Most of Sunday was spent in bed and I only managed to regain my feet Monday noon. For the record Serlo is fighting fit.

This run was certainly more difficult than what we were expecting. For us, the real fear and loathing was Narrabeen Beach. As we descended onto the Narrabeen Carpark we saw the Fearsome Foursome taking to the Narrabeen sands and thought this is too crazy to contemplate. Now I read that Lawrence went all the way. Hats off.

Our running party should have been 3. Sickness caused a withrawal. I will certainly be pushing him to compete in future FATASS runs.

Thank you for organising the run.
