Motivation A Problem

Posted by bandak , 22 September 2010 · 152 views

I can't believe it has been 7 months since my last blog here. So much has happened since then - another failed marathon on the Gold Coast, a change of jobs and living in a new city. Somewhere in there I've strung together a couple of good 10k races and had a few niggling injuries.

To briefly look at the last 7 months - trained up well for the GC marathon, but then five days out strained a hamstring. Still ran, but didn't feel great, walked a couple of Ks from about 34k and struggled home in 3.33 which was 3mins quicker than my first marathon at the GC two years earlier when I also carried an injury into the race (there will be a dramatic change to training for the next one).

Anyway, had a couple of weeks off after the Gold Coast before getting back in to it. Then took a new job in Brisbane at the start of August, and this is where motivation has become a problem.

The new job has me working afternoons and evenings (Friday-Tuesday), getting home about 11pm and not getting to bed until after midnight. Have brekkie with the kids in the morning, take them to school and then head out for a run. But it's been tough. I seem to be having trouble adapting to this routine. Most runs are a struggle, even though I've been able to bank 55-60k weeks. Some days I think it is just too much and don't feel like getting out there, even on my days off.

I really need something to kick-start my motivation. Would love to join in with a few running groups, but most run early in the mornings and I just think it's too much to deal with on only a few hours sleep. I did run the Bridge to Brisbane a few weeks ago on a few hours sleep and did OK, running 40.39 for the 10k after starting well back in the pack.

I think if I could get out and run with a few people it would give me a bit of a spurt. I still have this driving ambition to run a decent marathon, but at the moment I can't even contemplate the miles needed to achieve it, and coming into summer and knowing I have to run mid-mornings I realise it's going to be tough over the next few months to log some decent miles.

I don't want to give up running because I enjoy it so much, but I don't want it to be a slog like it's been the past couple of months, especially now that I'm injury-free.

I guess I just need to push myself to get out of bed at least one morning a week to join up with other runners - it might be the motivational kick I need.

Anyway, gotta go - kids on holidays, it's my day off and where off to Manly for lunch, and to Dreamworld tomorrow.........

3.33 IS a decent marathon!!!  But I know what you mean, a change of job and normal hours can wreak havoc on training, unless you REALLY want it.  And unfortunately a good nights sleep is often the key to a good days training. I hope you can work it out.

Thanks Fred,
Sleep is no problem, but having to run mid-morning is completely new to me. I suffered a bit of a twinge in my left knee last week and had 4 days off, and missed running quite a bit. So I'm just gunna get out and run when I can.
Thanks for the words of encouragement. Happy running

Fitting training sessions in is always a challenge + starting a new job is very stressful so you should give yourself time & just focus on getting an exercise session in & not worrying about quality. Any runners at your work? Maybe you could find someone with a similar schedule. Or try posting for a running group/partner on CR.  Some people swear by treadmill workouts but I always found that vastly inferior to "real" running. Give me a trail any day! But it could be a solution sometimes.

Good luck

Thanks Lindy,
Yeah, it's a big of a challenge, but just had 4 days off after a slight twinge in my left knee, and I missed running quite a bit. There are people at work who run, but we all work different shifts, so it's a bit hard to meet up. I enjoy running and I'm gunna just get out there and do it when I can.
Thanks for four words of encouragement. Happy running
