Have been reading a fair bit about barefoot running and transitioning with a minimalist shoe.  Instead of going out and buying another pair of shoes, I thought why not Dunlop Volleys!  As far as I can tell Volleys fit the mould as a minimalist shoe without spending the big bucks. Anyone tried them or see any reason why they wouldn't be an option.

Yeah, I reckon they're brilliant. The only problem that some people have is, because so many barefooters are trail runners, that they wear out quickly on rough surfaces. But they're fine for roads and everything else, and they're cheap!

The biggest concern I would have with Volleys is that their sole is fairly spongy compared to other shoes minimalist shoes. I have heard about people who have removed some of the innersole to improve this. Whenever I walk around in the ones I keep at work (I pretty much wear VFF's 95% of the time) you do notice a squelchy feel.

Yes, I wear them. As mentioned, they wear out quickly. Also, they are quite heavy. You can't beat them for price though

AND they come as steel cap, which I wear to work.  Biggest problem is the narrow toe box and the rubber case which makes your feet hot.

What about the old fashioned rubber soled running shoes that everyone wore in the 70s and 80s? I believe there were less injuries back then even amongst the guys running 100 miles per week. You can still buy the Asics tigers as fashion shoes but I wonder if anyone still runs in them?

I think the recent tigers have been designed purely with fashion in mind. I dont know of there are any old ones kicking around, but i think i'd prefer them to these new, flashy ones.

I was running in Volleys for nearly a year and recently moved to five fingers.

There appear to be thick and thin sole Volleys. The thin-sole ones are really good for barefoot running and they're pretty light too. In my opinion, they're not too different from VFFs.

As others have mentioned, durability is a problem. The shoe pretty much falls apart after 4-5 months. But they're so cheap that it doesn't really matter.

Thats 1500km or more so not to bad value for money for a pair of shoes that cost $15-$20.

I used to wear them to work but because i slid glass (glazier) across them all the time the steel toes would fall out!

Hi guys and gals i picked up a pair of DV's a couple of weeks back from Payless shoes . They are very different to the old ones i have , they are black with a completly different sole to normal and feel a lot thinner sole to the old style  . They seem to be pretty good so far .

Thought this story was very topical to this thread...

Went running through a very muddy Glenrock Reserve yesterday morning with a group of runners filling in the day after the cancellation of the Six Foot Track Marathon. Along the way, we ran into 3 guys running the opposite way, all wearing quite varied footwear.

One fella had a standard pair Brooks Adrenalines, another was sporting a pair of red Vibram Fivefingers, and the third guys was proudly wearing what looked like a new pair of Dunlop Volleys - fast transitioning from stark white to brown with all the mud around.

Had to get a photo...
