I noticed that a Grant Denyer(Channel 7 "Sunrise" Weatherman?) completed the Sydney Nike(Your the run that I want)10km in 39.05 recently - not bad! A few years ago(2001?) I was surprised to find out that legend ironman and renowned beach runner/endurance athlete Guy Leech(then approx 35y/o) completed the cts behind me in just over 64min. - but perhaps he wasn't trying? I know that boxer Jeff Fenech and numerous footballers and other sporting personalities have done the Sydney CtS but don't know how they fared. Anybody else know of any sprightly sporting legends/celebs?

Shane Crawford can do a fairly decent 100m from what I've heard but the exact time eludes me at the moment.

Warwick Capper can often be seen doing a shirtless fartlek session with the Bay Boyz - probably could still go under 35 mins for 10k too if he trained regularly.

Allan Border ran the 1996 Noosa half marathon but I don't know his time.
Craig Johnston (ex-Liverpool soccer star), in his life story, says he once ran in a 10k race and it was the hardest thing he'd ever done.
Ingemaar Johannsen and Floyd Paterson, who became friends after their boxing days were over, have both run the Stockholm (I think) marathon, running together.

Most people would be aware that Oprah Winfrey has completed a marathon. Last year Sean 'Snoopdoggydog' Coombs also completed one. Locally, author Bryce Courtney has been a passionate runner for years.

Jarno Trulli, former Renault F1 driver now with Toyota, ran the Florence half marathon in around 1h 35m, and is aiming to break 1h 30.  There's another grand prix driver who did a marathon last year, but I can't remember who it was.

Last year I ran past Tony Liberatore towards the end of the Melbourne marathon....

and Shuffle, I don't think Sean Combs aka P Diddy, aka Puff Daddy would be very impressed at being confused with Snoop Dogg!!

I heard Fifi Box (MMM dj and occasional guest on the Panel) ran the recent Nike race in Sydney (don't know her time) and one of the DJ from the morning crew on 101.1 MIX FM (in Melbourne only) recently ran the Melbourne Half marathon.

I remember a few years ago reading Johnny Lee Miller (Actor) ran the London Marathon a few times coming in around 3:30 which at the time I thought was amazing.

Okay its not strictly running but does have a running theme. In October this year I beat Jana Pittman in Melbournes 'Around the Bay in Day' 210km bike ride. Her knee looked fine   :D

Marathoning politicians include John Bannon, Wayne Goss (both sub 3), Tony Abbott (3.57), George W Bush (3.47 I think) and Al Gore (4.1x).

Richard Alston, Peter Costello, George H W Bush and Condi Rice are also regular runners, not sure of their times however.

I recall reading that Shane Crawford would be close to qualifying for the Elite series at the Zatopek meet in the 800 and 1500.

Pat Rafter, got a bit over 30 mins I think for the 5.6k stroll round Centennial Park yesterday.  Reckon he probably had a bit more in him though...

I think Billy Brownless (ex AFL) did the melbourne Nike run.

I think Mark Latham is another running pollie.

Quite a few AFL footballers are/were handy runners.

Paulc

Billy did a fantastic job promoting the Melbourne Nike run and was great behind the mike at the presentations.

He also came to a few of the training runs to walk the 4km option... using the 40mins of walking to bag a Kiwi mate of mine about cricket.  My Kiwi friend didn't know who Billy was and all he could say at the end was "boy, that big bloke can talk!"

But, Billy DID NOT run the 10km.  He admits it would have killed him    :D

AFL footballer David Spriggs did a 12:40 Tan.

The 'record' is held by Craig Mottram at 10:12.

Rapper P. Diddy aka Sean Combs beat Oprah's time comfortably in New York last year and in the process raised two million bucks from his fellow celebrities for children's charities.

After only a month and a half of training and suffering badly from cramps he said "running 26 miles isn't a publicity stunt"

Actor Daniel Day Lewis is an accomplished runner who often shows up at funruns around Ireland.  There was some talk of him running the Dublin Marathon this year.

The Mayor of Goldcoast, 'Ron Clarke' I believe his name is, did a bit of running in his younger days...apparently he ran a decent 10km   ;)

That high-quality publication 'Runners World' always seems to have articles about TV personalities that run 1-2 times weekly.
Cathy Freeman runs on occassion, as she's just a has-been celeb in my books.

I have a vague recollection of Joe Strummer running the London Marathon sometime back in the 80's
Perhaps Clash fan Kev can confirm this for me.

John Bannon's last day as Premier of SA was spent running the 1992 Adelaide Marathon. I only know that because i ran with him for quite a few K's and was driving back to Melbourne on the Monday and sure enough on the news on the car radio he had resigned (always wondered what the hell i'd said to him !!).
Strange but true fact.
I'd also say my first ever fun run was the Live Aid 10 KM in Melbourne (1985 ?), and just towards the end of passed Ross Glendenning The 1983 Brownlow Medallist), have to admit it was then i realised running can't be that hard when i could just go out and beat a footy legend !

Author, Bryce Courtney and Advertising guru, John Singleton have both run the 6 foot track.

Kevin Smith and Ian Robinson [AFL umpires from the 70's and 80's] both ran sub 12 mins around the tan.

Oprah Winfrey....approx 4.30 for a marathon

West Indian fast bowler of the 70's, Michael Holding was a 46 second man over 400 metres

Mark Seymour of Hunters and Collectors fame has a 14.37 p.b. over 5km

Geoff Hunt [world squash champion in the 70s]was regarded as the world's fittest man at the time with regular workouts of 30 by 400m at the Melbourne Uni Track.

Comedian, Bill Cosby went within a whisker of making the US Olympic team over 400 metres.....can't remember which year, 1964-68???

Former Kangaroos AFL star of the 70's, Barry Cable, was a state class runner over 800 and 1500 metres

World boxing champion, Johnny Famechon was a regular 3 hour runner in the melbourne marathon up until his tragic car accident

Melbourne actor from the 60' and 70's, Norman Yemm [homicide, sullivans etc] was, at the same time, one of our top pro 400 runners and gained much publicity with his numerous wins in the "Dandy Dollar Dash" at half time of the VFA football on channel 10.

1984 Sydney to Melbourne winner, Geoff Molloy, was a regular sun tour rider in earlier days

ABC sports commentator, Tim Lane and 3AW radio jock, Darren James were "regulars" on the Melbourne fun run scene in the 80's.

Arthur Ellis, known for his corny TV ads for his Holden dealership [Northpoint Holden]during the 80's was also a fun run regular

Another F1 driver aussie Mark Webber does a adventure race in tasmania to fundraise money in his off season, and most AFL player run the same running training that the top runners run and are quite fit and probably fast, many soccer players can run 30's for 10km as do regular 15km+ training a week, that actor in bridget jones diary, the main one apparently runs 10km a day, and i believe anthony mundene ran the New marathon in the past

Johnny Dark,

Joe Strummer definitely ran a marathon, although specifics of his running career are quite vague.  In seperate interviews he talks about running both the London and Paris marathon three times.  I have seen mention of a sub-3 hour effort, but from his own lips, his best time is 4:40 (with 8-10 pints the night before).

and although not running related, "London Calling" remains the greatest album of all-time...

Cheers

Sparkie & Johnny Dark - there you go I have been ignoring this thread and something good came up. Strummer definitely has run both London & Paris more than once. No way did he do sub-3.

The following interview is from “Steppin’ Out” Magazine, December 1st, 1999:

Q: Didn’t you once run in the Paris Marathon?
Joe: Yep. I ran three of them.
Q: Correct me if I’m wrong but is it also true that you never trained for any of them?
Joe: You shouldn’t really ask me about my training regime, you know.
Q: Why?
Joe: Because it’s not good and I wouldn’t want people to copy it.
Q: Don’t make me beat it out of you.
Joe: Okay, you want it, here it is. Drink 10 pints of beer the night before the race. Ya got that? And don’t run a single step at least four weeks before the race.
Q: No running at all?
Joe: No, none at all. And don’t forget the 10 pints of beer the night before. But make sure you put a warning in this article, “Do not try this at home.” I mean, it works for me and Hunter Thompson but it might not work for others. I can only tell you what I do.

If you're a bigger fan Sparkie, I could show you my collection of bootleg CDs. Its getting big. Or maybe I could give out some mp3 CDs. I've been into them since about 1977 !

There is a similar thread here
