Hills Athletics 3km Race

Posted by Brick, Mar 18 2010, 06:47 AM

Was going to do the 5km again but the plantar fasciitis started hurting just before 3km so decided to stop.
Best to rest it while I can to get better, better than to push it and it gets worse.
It certainly is staring to piss me off at the moment.

Distance 3km
Time 12:25
Pace 4.08

Will still do SMC 10km on Sunday but nothing until then except lots of stretching and icing.

6' Track 2010 Race Report

Posted by Brick, Mar 15 2010, 08:08 AM

A personal worst by 20 minutes for me and nearly an hour from my PB.
Started feeling very apprehensive because of a few problems I have had coming into the race.
Sarted at the back of wave 2 and it was so slow down Nellies it took us 18:30 minutes to the sign at the bottom some other people in wave 2 arrived at the same spot in just over 9 minutes.
Gogirl passed my just after never to be seen again.
Was a short ways behind Cliffold then he disapeared and suddenly caught me from behind(He had a toilet stop).
We ran together from Coxes to the top of Mini Mini.
At the top of Mini Mini still no problems until I started to go down Mini Mini it hurt landing on my heal.
The Plantar Fasciitis kicked in and it hurt a lot.
Could run the flats and easy up hills but walked or jogged very slowly the down hills.
Got to the top of Pluvio feeling OK and started running and suddenly I vomited ended up with 3 vomits along Black Range and a lot of walking, guts started to feel OK again just before Deviation as Paul Every passed me but decided to walk some more just to be safe.
Why this happened I have no idea not hot not even pushing it hard so no idea.
Stared running again but by this time even the flats hurt my heals so it was all very slow unitl the last 3kms down hill.
I walked all of this very slowly on my toes trying not to put weight on my heals because it hurt so much.
This was my fourth finish and slowest but I am still proud of myself for finishing even with a crap time.
The beers at the end tasted very nice.

Some superb runs by beer betters and other.
So happy to see Mike and Dan win the race within a race.
Also very happy Uncle Dave had a good one.
Tim2 is coming back to form again and Mr D had a blinder.

Thanks Colin and all who helped organise the race RFS and all the vollies a superb job as always.
I will be back next year for some revenge, hopefully not injured and vomiting still.

Plantar Fasciitis Update And 6' Track

Posted by Brick, Mar 10 2010, 07:21 AM

Any update incase anybody is interested.
I also put this on the Plantar Fasciitis thread but easier to find on my own blog for reference at a later date.

QUOTE (Bellthorpe @ Mar 7 2010, 05:25 PM) *
Apologies if this link has been posted, but it seems like a good one, from a guy whose running wisdom I respect.

I found that page a few weeks ago and then could not find it again thanks for the link Bellthorpe.

Rob I find cycling helps a lot but I do have very stiff cycle shoes carbon fiber soles.
If you try to ride properly and not lazy with your style it certainly helps me stretch out my calfs.
Saying that I have not been on the bike for the last two weeks.

I had Gastric flu a couple of weekends ago which was most likely a good thing it stopped me from training totally for 4 days.

I have decided to run 6' Track on Saturday and see how I do.
Not 100% sure it is the correct thing to do but it is my decision when it comes down to it.

I have basically rested the last two weeks only did 2x5km runs last week and will do a 5km tonight nice and easy.
Then 6' Track on Saturday.

I have been to the phsio the last two Fridays and will go and see him again this Friday for more massage and loosening of the calf/achilles & ankle joint all very stiff which is why he thinks I got Plantar Fasciitis in the first place.
I have also been doing lots of stretching and loosening exercises.
Rolling a frozen water bottle under the foot has also been good.

My right foot does not hurt at all any more and my left foot has a very slight bit of pain first thing in the morning but no limping which is great.
And the best part when I run I feel like I am running with my normal style as good/bad as that maybe it is the way I normally run so hopefully no more damage because of running with a weird gate/style.

And Now Gastric Flu!

Well still no sign of a break.
Went up to do the Kedumba Pass run only managed one loop the plantar fascitis played up by the time we got to the turn around on 6.5kms in.
Ran and walked back OK with VStar but stopped at the cars and had a 3km slow walk seems how I needed to wait for sailaway.
Thanks Luis for the lift.

I had the feeling someting was not quite right on Saturday morning going for 3 poos before leaving the house and another before we even started the run but felt OK the rest of the day.
Saturday night had tummy cramps all night so a shocking nights sleep and then felt crap all day Sunday.
Monday still felt like shit so had the day off work both children have been vomiting and had diarrhea so I guess they have the same thing.

Back at work today (Tuesday) but sweating a lot and not feeling to good still, got the train in so trying to be sensible.

At least the wife has not got it yet.

What Next? When Will I Cop A Break?

Posted by Brick, Feb 26 2010, 08:30 AM

If you do not want to read another rant by me leave quickly.

[Rant]
For the last couple of weeks I have been having some pain at the heal of both my feet.
On Thursday marning after the Wednesday night Hills Aths training session I could hardly walk because of the pain in my feet.
It went away very quickly and it ends up just being an annoying background pain all day/night.
So on Thursday I had a look at the internet and found out that I could have plantar fascitis so I booked in to see my physio this morning.
Well I do have plantar fascitis but only very slightly and he thinks it is being caused by extra hill sessions and trail running.
Why? I ask.
Well he checks me out and says my ankles are far too tight and do not roll enough this tightens the achilles and the calf muscles which in turn tighten the plantar fascia and end up causing the plantar fascitis.

So he loosens the achilles and calf's for both legs and gives me some new stretches to do.
He tells me I can still do my planned training run tomorrow and then to taper for 6'.

I have got to go back and see him next Friday to see how it is all going which is positive.

But what next it just seems like one setback after another and it is pissing me off.

Sorry for another down post it seems like that is all I seem to do in 2010.
I really hope it all starts to get better soon and I can cop a break.

[/Rant]

Smc 10km 21 February 2010

Posted by Brick, Feb 21 2010, 10:33 AM

Up at 4:00am had breakfast and left a bit late because Keith was a tad late after being stopped for a breath test so left by 4:40.
With John and Keith set up the 25km course all good in time for Keith to get to the 25km start time at 7:00.
Was feeling good and met up with Linda and Wayne from Hills Aths.
I was going got pace Linda to a 42 minute 10km at least that was the plan.

Started off OK feeling good and did the first 1km in 4.11 spot on target.
Got to 2km in 8.13 still a good pace.
Went past the 2.5km water station and started to feel some nausea coming on (Not good) so dropped back and Linda carried on ahead.
Still feeling bad all the way to the 5km turn around.
Was at least 1 minute behind Linda by the 5km mark but she was still looking good and powered home for a 43:** and a 1 minute PB.
Good on ya Linda.
My guts felt better at the 5km turn around so I started to speed up again but it did not last long and it all fell apart again with nausea all the way to end.
I ended up with a 45:55 for the 10km a personal worst for a 10km race.
I am thinking about pulling out of 6' Track I simply have not done enough training and with the nausea still hanging around I am running crap.
Luis asked me if I would like to do a couple of laps of Kedumba pass next weekend which the wife has said I can do and I will decide depending upon that run if I run 6' track or not.
Not happy at all.

Hills Athletics 5km Race

Posted by Brick, Feb 18 2010, 07:47 AM

Wednesday 17 February 2010.
I did Hills Aths 5km again less than two weeks after my bike accident.
On Tuesday I had the dressing off my leg and the doctor told me I could start running again as long as it did not hurt.
My left leg is still slightly swolen and bruised two weeeks after the accident but feeling a lot better.
So on Tuesday night I did a 5km run at home with a bit of effort in:
Time 23:08
Pace 4.37

After this I decided to give the 5km race a go and see how I felt.
New track because Roxborough Park is having new grass and watering system installed.
So drive to Gooden Reserve, Baulkham Hills.
Steve asked me to check the track out for distanve with my Garmin.
The inside lane I measured as 3.55, 3.57, 3.54 meters.
The outside lane I measured as 3.96, 3.94, 3.93 meters.
So we decided to run the race on the outside of the outside lane.

I had a good run for 3km and passed the timer on 12:16 but then my tummy muscles went tight for the last 2kms so slowed a bit and finished in:
Distance 5.05km measured on my Garmin 305 Steve got 5.2 on his Garmin 405.
Time 21:01.
Pace 4.12

Happy with that and will see if I can get a bit better/faster at SMC on Sunday for the 10km race.

Fridays Up Date On My Leg

Posted by Brick, Feb 12 2010, 12:45 PM

I went to the Doctor to have the wound looked at again and also to get the results from the test done on the yellow goob coming out it.
The result is that the antibiotics should be OK to clear up the infection, which is good news.

But I did see a different doctor and they were pissed off to say the least with the last doctor.
She told me they should of dressed the wound.

So she dresses the wound after adding lots of stuff which is kind of like vaseline but has some thing in it to help healing.
She also tells me to come back on Sunday and she will give it a good clean after the scab has loosened up a bit.

So today I have bloody great big bandage on the leg but it feels a lot less painful already.
Thank heavens for small mercy.

More Leg Photos

Posted by Brick, Feb 12 2010, 06:28 AM

Leg still not healing properly and it still hurts, this means not much sleep so feeling very tired.
The biggest problem is I miss running so much it is getting me down a real bugger.

This was about 2 hours after it happened.

This was 7 days later.

Another closer photo 7 days later still not healing properly.

Leg Update

Posted by Brick, Feb 10 2010, 07:08 AM

Well eventually my wife convinced me to go to the doctor about my leg.
Why well yesterday it was hurting more than it has done since I did it so I went to the doctors.

And the diagnosis is that it is infected and I am on antibiotics 1 tablet every 6hrs of 500mg Cephalexin.
Sample taken from the wound and sent to test to make sure that the antibiotics will work on the infection, will find out the results on Friday.
And the worst part is the doctor said no running until I can walk without any pain at all or at least 7 days which ever is the longer.

So I have a minimum of 7 days of no running a hurt leg and less than 5 weeks till 6' Track not good preperation for a hard race and good time.
Maybe this year my target will be a finish might be a good idea and not worry about time at all.
That means I will simply be donating my beer in the beer bet for sure.

Not happy Jan.
