I haven't been sticking to the programme this month, because of a 2 weeks' hiking holiday in NZ. When I wasn't running I was hiking some very steep hills and I think it has really paid off. I'm feeling much stronger.
Here's the summary of my activities since last blog:
7-Feb-11 Monday DNR
8-Feb-11 Tuesday travel to Christchurch - did short sharp 5km in North Hagley Pk, just perfect running conditions 5.6km in 32:21 @ 5:47. SO TERRIBLE what has happened there since!
9-Feb-11 Wednesday DNR train Christchurch-Picton
10-Feb-11 Thursday Queen Charlotte track, day 1: Ship Cove to Furneaux approx 16km all up - about 7km walking, then ran 9km. The track is very rocky and steep in parts and after a minor fall during which I skinned my knees and rolled an ankle I took it pretty easy, only averaging about 7min kms when running.
11-Feb-11 Friday Queen Charlotte track, day 2: Furneaux to Punga Cove - I ran 12km, again taking it easy, then ran a further 4km back along the track to meet my mum and Mr Sook, then walked 4km total kms = 20
12-Feb-11 Saturday Queen Charlotte track, day 3: Punga Cove to Portage 25km of which I only ran about 1. This included a number of very steep climbs and I had to stay with Mr Sook who was struggling a bit.
13-Feb-11 Sunday Queen Charlotte track, day 4: Portage to Lochmara approximately 9km, again a very steep climb to start then a bit easier, though the last hour there were landslides off the track. I ran the last 1.5kms.
WEEKLY SUMMARY (7-13/2) - 76km (of which quite a few were hiking rather than running, but I count them because of the hills)
14-Feb-11 Monday Queen Charlotte track, day 5: Lochmara to Anakiwa 22km - again a big climb to reach the track. I stayed with Mr Sook for the first 10km then ran the last 12. Again nearly rolled ankle a couple of times, I MUST investigate proper trail shoes next time.
15-Feb-11 Tuesday DNR travel to Picton, then Golden Bay by car
16-Feb-11 Wednesday Pohara-Tata bch return 10.01 in 57:09 @ 5:43 - my first chance to run on bitumen again, very pleased with my form considering undulations.
17-Feb-11 Thursday Pohara-Wainui return 20.01km in 2:00:56 @ 6:03 I was very happy with this run, which included a 2km steep hill (twice) as well as the previous days' undulations. The last km was done in 5:00!
18-Feb-11 Friday Abel Tasman National Park - had a relatively easy day runningwise, walked 3km up a steep hill with Mr Sook on the first part of the Abel Tasman Track then ran back to car 6km all up. Later in the day drove with Mum to Totaranui and had very exciting water taxi trip down to Torrent Bay and back, great views and saw baby seals etc.
19-Feb-11 Saturday DNR drive Golden Bay-Picton, caught Interislander ferry to Wellington
20-Feb-11 Sunday Wellington Round the Bays half marathon 1:54:42 plus warmup and 3km walk back, 25km all up. Very pleased with this run considering the fast 20km on the previous Thursday. I entered on a whim on the morning of the race and really wasn't expecting to run such a good time (for me). Big negative split too - about 1:20 difference in the two halves of the race.
WEEKLY SUMMARY (14-20/2) 82km, of which most were run
21-Feb-11 Monday DNR train Wellington-Auckland
22-Feb-11 Tuesday early morning around the bays in Auckland 10.02km in 58:01 @ 5:47, then caught plane home in the evening.
23-Feb-11 Wednesday round the Bay (theme is developing hey) 11.01km in 1:02:19 @ 5:40
24-Feb-11 Thursday DNR, did pilates in the morning, then family birthday party
25-Feb-11 Friday 10.14 in 1:00:13 @ 5:56 (Callan Pk return) - another pleasing run, which included some significant hills.
26-Feb-11 Saturday Coolrunning Sydney 5km challenge. I managed 24:17 for this (one second better than last month, which was a non-paced PB on the course). 12 km all up for the day. I was pretty pleased with this run considering I woke up with a headache, seem to be fighting off a relapse with the cold I had in NZ.
27-Feb-11 Sunday 25km long run at 6:01 pace (2:30:59) - from home across to Centennial Park to visit the ultra going on there today. Saw a couple of runners I knew, including Bandanna, but know a lot more were out there on the course including Paul Every, Plu and Brick. I also saw the SWEAT group charging around the park, never did manage to catch up with them properly, but saw them again just as I was leaving to go home (after a circuit of the park and some more catching up with Diane and Clare at the checkpoint). I said hi to Sean my coach but doubt he recognised me since he's only met me once.
WEEKLY SUMMARY (21-27/2) 68km
I leave you with a pic of me slogging up a sandhill on Farewell spit last week!
