With 2011 a year punctuated with injuries, I have climbed back on the wagon and am making yet another return to running.
Last year for me was, in short, a disaster. MRI in March discovered a bone spur on left knee that was aggravating the patella tendon. Took 6 months off to let it settle down. Returned to running in September and everything was going ok until hurt back/high hammy in December and lost another 2 months.
There was lots of stretching during time off and was able to return to running in late January.
I didn't think it would be so tough to get back into it, even had myself questioning why am I doing this again. Heat/humidity a killer in Brissie when haven't run for a while and with my work shifts being mid-afternoon to late night, my running has come at various stages of the day (couple a times a week after 11pm after work, my days off at 6pm and am trying to get at least one mid-morning run after dropping the kids off at school)
Anyway, fitness is returning quickly and have put together some increasing mileage weeks and looking forward to using this Sunday's Brisbane Road Runners half marathon champs as a long slow run as a guage to whether to tackle the Twilight Half in a month's time.
At this stage just putting miles into the legs and not concerned with any speed work. Seems every time i cop an injury it's when speed sessions are introduced. I think I have the bad habit of trying to break world records every time i do a speed workout, so when it comes time to re-introduce speed work the session will be at a more sedate effort. I think another injury-enforced layoff would spell the end of running for me.
Have set no targets or race goals for this year. PLan is to just enjoy running for a while. Probably will run the Brissie Twlight Half next month and possibly the Gold Coast Marathon in July - but both with no time targets.
Just want to stay fit and healthy and set up the body for a strong year of running in 2013.
Stay tuned .....
