Problem - Hrm Or Heart

Posted by dingoonthetrot , 28 May 2008 · 132 views

Bought myself a HRM recently.  I think I preferred running without it. Borrowed a good book by Sally Edwards on using the monitor and that answered most of my questions.  However, being an old bugger I can't help being concerned when I see it climb to 220BPM.  I run comfortably at 150BPM.  On Saturday it did a rapid climb when I was standing still ( coffee, power lines ?).   On Sunday morning I did a 19km run and it spiked at 222 on two occassions toward the end.  Within 30secs it dropped again to my 160 beats. I don't feel ill.  It would probably be a good way to go - but not yet   I was checked out by a Dr prior to beginning my harder running.  The best advice I've had, I guess, is to check my pulse when the monitor says I'm racing.  I'm not a risk taker.
Found a new route on the weekend and am seeing a lot of country I haven't seen before.  Massive dog came running up behind me and scared the   out of me.  It enjoyed the run as well but it stopped at the Stop sign and then returned home.  I'm enjoying the distance runs at the moment.

Sounds more like some kind of issue with the device than your heart. What brand is it mate?

It's a $70 Slazenger.  Nothing fancy at that price but I'm hoping it works.  Reasonably confident that if I was going to have a heart attack it would have happened today.  I pushed things fairly hard.  Am willing to believe these spikes in the readings are caused by sun flares or some other uncontrollable and unpredictable event.

Yeah, that is pretty cheap. It probably will have the odd sticky moment. Dont worry about it too much as it should be accurate 90% of the time.

Thanks for noticing me Colsy.  I get to Adelaide a couple of times a year (from Mount Gambier - fuels a killer).  Hopefully I wil manage a run with the CR crowd next time.

My Polar HRM always goes wacko at certain points on my route - obviously some sort of radio interference. I usually turn it on once I'm past the offending site. Another thing that affects my HRM readings is if the strap isn't sitting right, either because I haven't sweated enough to get the electrodes wet, or because I've sweated too much and the band is so waterlogged it's bouncing off my chest. Maybe try wetting the electrodes before you run and/or make sure the strap is tight enough.
