Giardia - Back into Running / Signing up for Melbourne 1/2 + Health Scare

Posted by bennie , 30 May 2012 · 251 views

Hi Everyone,

I'm back.... Well I've never actually left but it's good to be here! :-)

Its been a rather long twelve months since my last major injury and I'm finally back into some slow running.

My left foot is still a bit stiff but otherwise it's ok.

Last run : 11km : 1 hour and 5 mins : http://connect.garmi...ivity/182832922

Yes, it's slow.. but hey.. I'm rapt that i'm out there... :-)

A big word of thanks to TigerBoy who has always been encouraging and helpful to me from the side lines.

I've been effectively injured for 2 years now with issues but i'm NOT going to let it get me down. I've turned 40 years old and life has truly just begun!

I'm planning on doing another 1/2 at Melbourne Marathon. I fleetingly thought of the full marathon, then the brain cells kicked into gear and I wisely thought. It can wait for another year.

It's been an insane year so far....

Had the unfortunate pleasure of contracting Giardia from a trip in Thailand in February. Knocked me around good and proper and after 10 weeks (and losing more than 10kgs) we finally had a diagnosis. Amazing what happens when you are given the right medication :-)

The health scare though was what they found when doing the colonoscopy :-( They found a polyp. Which in itself isn't that dramatic. However the type of polyp is what was of concern. It was a 'Villous adenoma with high grade dysplasia'. The doctor informed me that I'd dodged a bullet. The polyp was pre-cancerous and he said our conversation in 3 years time would have been very different. I was now officially a very lucky guy!!!! Got another colonoscopy in a year's time and then every 3 years time indefinitely...

Life is truly different...... But so happy in so many ways.

It's fantastic to be able to run again. I've truly missed it!

Looking forward to seeing you guys/girls out there soon. I'll be taking myself for a leisurely stroll to Run Melbourne (10km).....

Take care now.
Benjamin
