Benjamin's Running History / On off 2 years of Injury Summary


February 2009
  • Threw away the smokes : Easiest thing I've ever done! :-)
  • Started Running :-)
  • Went to Chris Petropoulos and was fitted with orthotics

October 2009
  • Successfully completed 1/2 Marathon October : 1 hour 53 mins

October - May 2009
  • Trained over summer
  • Felt good however foot soreness slowly increasing due to increased km's.
  • Planned to run GOR 1/2 in May
  • Long runs now out to 27 kms.
  • Plan was to do Melbourne Marathon (full).

May 2010
  • Orthotics tweaked by Chris Petropoulos, right orthotic, medial posting increased.
  • Pain in left foot
  • Extreme pain in right foot lateral malleolus <just below>
  • Pulled out of race and saw Dr. Ben Barresi at Melbourne Sports Medicine Centre
  • Nuclear Bone Scan
  • Told to stop running for six weeks
  • Read medical report & nuclear bone scan findings <From Dr. Ben Barresi>

May - June 2010
  • No running
  • Swimming instead <sorry hated it>

July 2010
  • Visited Phillip Brownrigg (Strathmore)
  • Learn how to walk again, foot exercises etc
  • Could teach my foot to have an arch etc
  • Didn't work!!!! :-(

July - August 2010
  • Did exercises given by physio 4 times a day every day for 8 weeks
  • Minor pain still there
  • Informed that I wasn't doing the exercises correctly.
  • Me, having done all the exercises correctly, very frustrated! :-(

August 2010
  • Back into running on a semi-regular basis
  • 21.1+ distances, relatively pain free.

September - October 2010
  • Continued to train ok
  • Completed my 2nd 1/2 Melbourne Marathon with a PB <very relaxed and enjoyed it>

November - December 2010
  • Break from running, 4 or 5 runs at the most
  • Purchased road bike from a cross training perspective - Barely used

December - June 2011
  • A run every now and then - no pain in left foot
  • Pain in right foot - just below lateral malleolus
  • Hurts during run, sometimes
  • Hurts when I lift my foot off the ground (for a few seconds then fades away)

July 2011
  • Foot smashed into - Fellow cub leader at high speed
  • Stopped running. Barely walk etc.
  • Saw doctor
  • Visited Chris Petropoulos - Had CT scan but not MRI.
  • CT scan showed no issues, no stress fractures etc.
  • Informed possible ligament/tendon damage
  • 1st MTP - "catches", often, even when walking

July 2011 - January 2012
  • No running - Left foot still sore.

January 2012
  • Walked on unstable smooth rocks - riverbed up at Bright
  • Bruised left foot near back of foot
  • Next day - Plantar Fasciitis???? Sore in the mornings etc.

February 2012 - March 2012
  • No Running
  • Thailand - Giardia :-(
  • Found early stages of bowel cancer because of the giardia! Dodged a bullet there! :-)

May 2012 - Present
  • Started running again :-)
  • Mild to moderate pain
  • Left foot pain in 1st MTP, initially stiff but is now feeling ok.
  • Pain underneath foot though end of 2nd MTP
  • Continued Pain in right foot - just below lateral malleolus win in right foot,
  • Plantar Fasciitis???? Sore in the mornings etc. However has settled down
  • Enjoying the runs however a little stiff after the longer runs
  • Running 3 to 4 times per week
  • Running this Sunday at You Yangs : 15kms of trail running!
  • Goal : Another Melbourne 1/2 Marathon
  • Next year : GOR full
  • Life time : Continue to run! :-)  Plus loving the trails! :-)

Thanks Richard! I'm simply NOT going to give up on my love of running! :-)

I successfully completed my 1st trail run (You Yangs 15km) on the weekend and absolutely had a ball! I've never had so much fun running! Was simply WOW! :-)
