My run of bad luck with injuries has continued for the best part of a year since Comrades in 2010 - this has been difficult to take. After many false starts and attempts to get back in the saddle, I committed myself to a podiatrist (and orthotics) for the shins, a chiropractor for the back (ongoing) and 6 weeks complete rest (well, by complete rest, I mean no running). That was tough for me, but I hope it has been worth it.
Today, I started back in exactly the same way I began my Comrades journey in 2009; struggling to run just 6km. But that's okay. I have two things on my side; faith (in myself) and patience. I know that with a plan and the commitment, I can get from here to 100km in 12 months time, which is basically the goal I am setting myself. Indeed, yesterday, the biggest and most popular ultramarathon in Japan was run around Lake Saroma at the very northern tip of Japan.
Next June is a long way off, and lots can happen in twelve months. However, just like Comrades did to me in 2010, I believe that challenging myself to run Lake Saroma in 2012 will push me well out of my comfort zone and ensure I experience things I never would have, had I retreated to the couch and a comfortable middle age existence.
I am now Saroma dreaming! Anyone else up for it?
Basil
