Reflections On 5 Weeks To Willy Marathon

Posted by Caterpillar , 23 April 2011 · 252 views

5 weeks to go to the Sri Chinmoy Williamstown Marathon, and into the business end of the 3rd mesocycle of the Pfitzinger 18week 87-113km/wk program.

1. Seriously struggled with the back to back hard days entailing a 10km race followed by a 30km long run, which felt like the last quarter of a marathon.   Doing the race in the DS Racers probably didn't help, and everything was sore, stiff and tired for longer than I would have liked. :Black Eye:  Probably took a good 10 days to recover, a sign of my old age. I won't be doing that again in a while. Instead of a race or time trial on a Saturday, I'll do a slightly longer threshold paced run on Friday, then recovery run on Saturday, and a slightly longer long run on Sunday. In fact, I may stick to a challenging Friday threshold run until the taper.

2. Instead of the 5x600m intervals for this week as per the schedule on week 4 (to go), I did 5x1200m, and plan to 4x1600m next week. I still have a week up my sleeve, so may do 6x1600 the following week.

3. Have noticed that the 'sweet spot' for my ASICS 21xx is somewhere between 10k and 50km. That's when I seem to be fastest. So the plan for race day is to run in almost brand new 21xx.

4. Have done one Sunday long run in the Kayano's and I wasn't as slow as I had expected, given their extra weight. Won't be able to quantify the difference until I've done a few more long runs in them.

5. Still on track for a faster race than my last 3 marathons, barring injury or extreme weather conditions. Hard to say by how much at this stage. Will try to crunch some numbers during the taper.

Only 2 solid weeks to go before taper.  :)

good luck.

good luck - hope you achieve a PB

I'll see you there.
I've just noticed that my training plan conveniently calls for a half marathon race on that very day so I'm about to sign up.
Best of luck with the rest of the lead up.

How do you find the 2160s compared to Kayano?  I have a pair of K17s which I love and was thinking of adding some 2160s into the rotation now Mizuno have abandoned me with their weird new fit.

Thanks for all your comments :) @WetWeek: I am using the Kayano's on my Sunday 30+km long runs, and notice the improved cushioning compared to the 2160s. The Kayanos are slightly heavier but the difference is barely noticeable. In fact, my long run times with the Kayano's are only a few minutes longer than with a newish pair of 2160s. If the 2160s have more than 200km of mileage, I daresay I'd be faster in the Kayanos.

Cheers for that.  Instead of 2160s I think I'll wait for next year's Kayanos which sound brilliant - significantly reduced weight a new heel counter system (possibly the external design?).  Would make a brilliant long run training/marathon shoe.
