Comrades 2012 - Welcome home Bill

Posted by Unlikelyrunner , 08 June 2012 - - - - - - · 235 views

Comrades 2012 has always been about 2 things, learning from my 2011 run, and once again getting so much out of an event which is correctly called The Ultimate Human Race.

Also this year my wife would be travelling to South Africa with me and this was also exciting, I could finally show her why I find South Africa such a wonderful place and the race itself...

Comrades 2012 - the road to the start line

Posted by Unlikelyrunner , 23 May 2012 - - - - - - · 194 views

I havent blogged since the cancellation of the 6-foot track marathon back in March.  So many things have happened and the ability to draw inspiration and confidence from others in the running community has been one of the most rewarding experiences during this time.

After attending the funeral of a running colleague the day before 6-foot, my running squad...

When running matters no more

Posted by Unlikelyrunner , 06 March 2012 - - - - - - · 297 views

I havent written a blog update for a couple of months, mainly because I have recently changed jobs and I have been very busy, but also because it has been the commencement of a long haul preparation for Comrades 2012.

K2D was tough as already reported, as was Hares and Hounds.  Both of those races were hard because I didnt use the mental aspect of running...

Kurrawah To Duranbah, And Then Some

Posted by Unlikelyrunner , 07 December 2011 - - - - - - · 276 views

This weekend is the annual race from Kurrawah to Duranbah and back.  There are three race options; (1) the full 50km (there and back); (2) 30km solo; or (3) 2x 25km in relay format. I have taken the 3rd and softest option, well thats how it appears at first glance anyway.

Its a bugger of a race.  I did it last year and had a shocker.  I think it took me...

500Km Road Relay - Se Queensland

Posted by Unlikelyrunner , 21 November 2011 - - - - - - · 493 views

Does the thought of running in a relay format over 500km on hot bitumen in SE Qld just shy of summer sound enticing to you?  Well think again.

Last weekend I competed in this event which was a fundraiser for the Endeavour Foundation. A great cause and as my coach put it, a way to ask people to search deep within themselves for inspiration and at the same...

The Monotony Of Not Racing

Posted by Unlikelyrunner , 18 October 2011 - - - - - - · 96 views

I know plenty of people that race every weekend, and others than would be lucky to race once a year.  Both seem to knock out the same number of kilometers each week, often at the same tempo, but its obvious that people run for very different reasons.

Until this year I was someone who raced quite frequently, mainly because I loved the thrill of the...

Comrades 2012 - Here We Go Again.

Posted by Unlikelyrunner , 30 August 2011 - - - - - - · 150 views

As "Yazz" once said in a popular 1980's hit, "The only way is down, baby, its you and me now..."  Erm, hang on, wasnt that "up"?  Oh, well, maybe I should have stuck to the tried and true saying of "with every up there must be a down".

So, Comrades 2012 hey - it only seems like yesterday that I said to my family...

Finally, A Marathon Pb.

Posted by Unlikelyrunner , 06 July 2011 - - - - - - · 168 views

Sunday week ago was going to be a bit of a make or break day for me.  It was of course the day of the Gold Coast Marathon, my 3rd in a row, and probably the best preparation I have had for a 42.2km road run ever.  A massive year and no illness or injury leading in to the event meant the only excuse I had was whether or not my Comrades legs were going to...

The Gold Coast Marathon Festival

Posted by Unlikelyrunner , 23 June 2011 - - - - - - · 59 views

Well this will be the 3rd time in a row that I will run at the GCM Festival, and the 3rd time in a row that I have entered the full marathon. I entered a while ago but didnt actually commit to the full marathon until Sunday week ago after racing a 5km event at Runaway Bay and breaking my 5km PB by 2 mins and 29 secs.  I admit I havent run a 5km race for 12...

The Comrades 2011 Up Run - My Story

Posted by Unlikelyrunner , 07 June 2011 - - - - - - · 168 views

Well now I am safely back on Australian soil I feel emotionally focused enough to tell my story of one of the most wonderful weeks of my life, my Journey to South Africa to run the Ultimate Human Race - Comrades 2011.

Whilst the Journey began in October 2010, the official trip began on the 25th May 2011 from Brisbane airport to Durban, via Sydney and...
