The Monotony Of Not Racing

Posted by Unlikelyrunner , 18 October 2011 · 97 views

I know plenty of people that race every weekend, and others than would be lucky to race once a year.  Both seem to knock out the same number of kilometers each week, often at the same tempo, but its obvious that people run for very different reasons.

Until this year I was someone who raced quite frequently, mainly because I loved the thrill of the competition.  Admittedly at my pace its is competition with myself and not the elite runners, but I did like the challenge of beating a previous time, running better than expectations, or pushing through the pain barrier once again.

However, since August I havent raced once, but I still have been cranking out 60+km per week in long/slow runds (20-30km), controlled runs, as well as speed and hill sessions.

And now, on the eve of the 500km road relay (a team even in SE Qld over 3 days in aid of the Endeavour Foundation)I find it may have paid dividends.  This weekend, myself and 17 team mates will compete over 500km against 14 other teams in a relay format. Upon looking at the schedule it appears I will be running 7 legs of between 4.5kms and 7kms, some over flat terrain, others through the mountains, some in the early hours of the day, others when it will be 34c and 90% humidity.

And I cannot wait!

It should be a great 3 days with running friends, doing something for a good cause, and getting fit(ter) in the process.  If you live anywhere in SE Qld between Mt Gravatt, Beaudesert, Boonah, Rathdowney, Toowoomba, & Fernvale, and see a middle aged bloke melting into the tarmac in the midday heat, throw me a beer please?
