Comrades 2012 - the road to the start line

Posted by Unlikelyrunner , 23 May 2012 · 194 views

I havent blogged since the cancellation of the 6-foot track marathon back in March.  So many things have happened and the ability to draw inspiration and confidence from others in the running community has been one of the most rewarding experiences during this time.

After attending the funeral of a running colleague the day before 6-foot, my running squad and the general running community have once again played a significant role in my development as a decent human being.

Immediately followig the funeral a group of GFRS runners decided to run the 42.2km on the 1st July in honour of our friend (Steffi), and most of these guys are going way beyond their comfort zones with this one and I have been given the honour of running with them and helping them acheive a very emotional goal.  I have also had the privilege of running with them on many of their training sessions since March and watching them go from a 16km run to a 37km run just last weekend has been inspiring.

If you see us out on the course on 1st July in pink singlets, say hello.  If you have some spare change, I encourage you to donate to our charity, SANE.  Every dollar will make a difference to the lives of many many people.

Outside of the GCM, I have Comrades in just 10 days time. My 2nd and hopefully a back to back medal. I fly out next Tuesday, 29th, and I have been training the house down.  Ive run 300-400kms further since 1st Jan compared to the previous 12 months, and I am light years faster over all distances.  Some of the highlights of the running calendar since march have been:

25km Nerang Trail race in 2:30, 20mins quicker than 2011
60km Wildhorse Criterium in 6:13 and 5th male (6th overall)
50km Canberra Ultra (42.2km as the official 4:15 pacer and then then last 8km in about 43mins)
56km with Digger and the SE Qld Comrades gang in 5hrs 19 mins, nearly 30mins quicker than in 2011.

My aim this year is 8hrs 59mins or better, a 44min PB.  A mighty ask but Im not going to die wondering.  Im excited for everyone going across the ditch to compete in what  I believe is the worlds greatest foot race, by a country mile (or country 56 miles).

Im having dreams and nightmares already - I cannot wait, but Im petrified!

God speed to every participant, whether I know them or not.
