THE SMALL OLYMPIAN INSIDE

Posted by Johnbo , 22 August 2012 - - - - - - · 227 views

As I re-grouped after my M7 Marathon, I started to contemplate doing another one. But first I needed to ask the question, why ....

Deep inside each of us, there is a small Olympian struggling to get out, perhaps...

North Face Toe in the Water!

Posted by Johnbo , 21 May 2012 - - - - - - · 228 views

I used to think runners were mad.....then I became one.

And marathoners, well.....................then I became one.

As for bush runners, scarpering up hill and dale........yep, that's now me.....!

After enrolling for Glenbrook Marathon, Six Foot Track Marathon and Mt Solitary Ultra, all cancelled a day or two prior due to heavy rains and course...

check
Establish new and better running pattern to avoid injury relapse
check
Work on strength
check
Work on endurance
check
Re-discover the joy of running injury free!
check
Don't focus on racing until...

Soft Targets Are Under-Rated!

Posted by Johnbo , 02 August 2011 - - - - - - · 213 views

Toeing the line at Westlink M7 Marathon in July 2010, I felt well prepared and optimistic for a solid shot at a sub 3:10 finish. This would be a benchmark on the path to get within sight of a 3 hr assault at Melbourne 2010. In truth I wasn't sufficiently prepared at all.

To quote Robbie Burns "The best laid schemes o' mice an' men /...

The Great Disruption

Posted by Johnbo , 20 June 2011 - - - - - - · 232 views

As it was all coming together for the Gold Coast, so it all came spectacularly off the rails a couple of weeks ago in the Homebush 10 km. After an earlier 4 months off due to a Plantar Tear .... despair set in!

Flailing about trying to put the pieces back together, I hoped I might be able to rescure something and still front up next week. But there was...

The Long Run!

Posted by Johnbo , 09 June 2011 - - - - - - · 135 views

If ever I needed another reminder that the First Prioirty in preparing for any race, is to get to the start line intact, I was reminded again anyway, just 4 kms in to my 10 Km race at Homebush last Saturday.

I got to the start line intact on Saturday allright.

For the first time since perhaps the same 10 km race last year, I was feeling to be back on...

It was the ninth or tenth time I have cracked 40 minutes over 10 Km.

But I was quietly more excited at breaking 40 on Saturday than i recall feeling when I first broke it at Lane Cove in 2009.

And that run was just before my very unevenly paced marathon PB of 3:14:12 in Canberra.

Finally I am also coming out of my races feeling clear of injury...

Starting To Come Together

Posted by Johnbo , 24 May 2011 - - - - - - · 153 views

The Half Marathon was excellent psychology for me and a turning point with my body and headspace.

Three things:

Alans massage on Tuesday before followed by
Chiropractics session on Friday.
And the half marathon run.

All good.

The pacing was not perfect in the half but not bad, and i am learning. Good to have stuck with a plan with no heroic...

When Two Out Of Three Is Good!

Posted by Johnbo , 16 May 2011 - - - - - - · 135 views

With a history of adopting aggressive targets, pushing the boundaries, then burning and crashing in a ball of flames, my recent spate of injuries finally gave me pause for thought.

Maybe my 47 year old body has something it is trying to tell me about my approach to races...?

So since my debacle at W2B last year, two months making the injury worse,...

Friday 29 April To Thursday 5 May

Posted by Johnbo , 06 May 2011 - - - - - - · 101 views

A mixed week for me trying to precariously balance my training with 'walking the tightrope' with my left leg.... however appear to be travelling ok at the weeks end.

The potential for ill effect particularly with my tempo running is still dominating my thinking, and tempering my confidence. I feel I still haven't got a proper handle on the...
