Disappointed but not disappointed!

Well, my target race for a sub 35:30 has been and gone and I now know I have a lot of work to do to tick this one off my list but I still think I am a little closer than my history of times suggest
.
My race on 1st April went like this:

After some poor preparation for my last race (5k) I made sure everything was right for this race and ensured that I gave myself the best opportunity possible to run a quick race (for me!).  I was running well in the 2 weeks leading up to the race in training, had a good sports massage 2 days before the race (no deep tissue work though!) and had plenty of sleep/rest.

On the day of the race I got there early, in fact I was the first person there!

More rest in the  car before the time was right to do my warm up, stretching and strides.  I felt very good and in the best shape possible.  I quickly popped in a coffee shop for a cuppa 10 minutes before the start and the guy asked what time I expected to do which I replied "aiming for 35:30 but think I will come in around 36:30".  I agreed to pop back after the race to pay for my coffee!

I started the race well but needed to slow it down in the first km which I completed in 3:29, this was followed by a 3:31 and I was thinking of a sub 35:30 being on the cards as I felt strong and relaxed.  The 3rd km was 3:35, and the 4th 3:36 so even at this point I thought all was looking good.  The 5th km was completed in 3:40 (17:50 for 5km split).  Although I think it was 18:00 @ the actual marker.

I took on some water but mainly cooled down by pouring over my head.  The race was along a seafront and the circular route meant as we headed back home the wind was in our face (it didn’t seem to be in our favour going so that was strange!) and this slowed most people down.

I had ran with a fellow club runner for most of the first 5k but they pulled away from me at the turn and I tried to focus on keeping them the same distance in front of me from 6th km onwards, and then gradually work in pulling them in.  I finally managed to catch them right at the end as I was able to finish strong and record an official time of 36:32.

My prediction of around 36:30 was spot on!  I also popped back into the coffee shop to pay for my coffee and get another cuppa before heading off for the presentation.

My 6th km was 3:42, followed by 3:53, 3:46, 3:43 and then a last km of 3:26.  My Garmin showed I ran 10.06km so the last bit was for 55m in 0:10.

So overall, disappointed I didn’t get close to 35:30 but happy that I ran the best I could on the day, and recorded a PB.  I don’t think any of us can ask for more than that!

I still want to hit my target times and this result has made me more determined to do so.
