Targets, I just love targets!

Posted by Injured2010 , 03 April 2012 · 309 views

My work is all about targets which is why I think I run.  It is straight forward as you have either achieved your target or you haven’t.

There are many times I just don’t like running and think why do I bother but I know if I stop I won’t hit my targets and that wouldn’t be acceptable.  This is what keeps me going!

Now don’t get be wrong, I do have times I enjoy my running as well but I think the most satisfaction I get is from hitting a target.  I even find it hard to accept a PB if I haven’t hit my main target but I am learning to accept PB’s regardless of the level of PB.  I have PB targets set in the following categories: Poor PB, Decent PB, Target PB and Stretch PB.

My recent 10k PB was a poor PB but I have accepted that it was a PB and I did my best during the run so I have to be happy.  Sometimes I don’t hit a target at all but I always know if I keep at I will (this goes for work and running).

I also get a lot of satisfaction from looking at a photograph and seeing that my technique is getting better.  It is a long way from being perfect but I know the more I work at it the better I will get and the closer I will get to my long term targets.

I realise that not everyone is driven by targets and most people run for the enjoyment of running I just don’t understand how they enjoy it all the time!?

i love targets too. It keeps me motivated and seeing how much ive improved over how far i have to go

Targets are great motivators as long as you can cope with what happens with if you don't hit your mark. Your multiple levels are a good idea because it's not black & white - success/fail. Sometimes the best races are where you ran a shocker but finished anyway. If time is your only success line then failure is eventually inevitable.
Running for me was targets & enjoyment but mostly it was just part of who I was - I ran when I was angry, I ran when I was sad, I ran to celebrate or mourn, I ran when I was stressed. Life was easier to cope with when I was running well. I needed to run.

Like most runners & teachers my mantra had always been work hard & you will improve, learning to cope with not getting better has been a tough life lesson. Sometimes you can give everything & still not succeed - perhaps the true judgement of your race is what you do the day after an event. Your actions after success or failure are a good test of your commitment, self belief & life direction. Race goals & life goals need to be flexible or you miss out on living while you're checking graphs, time charts & heart rates.

I like this

"perhaps the true judgement of your race is what you do the day after an event."

and I think the same goes for what you do (how you behave) if things go well or don't go to plan in others areas of your life as well.
