Bribie triathlon race swim cycle run Saucony Hattori
Event: Bribie Island Triathlon Series - Race 1 (Long Course)
Date: 9/10/2011
Distance (advertised): 750m swim/20km bike/5km run
Result: 1:07:33 (15:23 swim/1:09 T1/29:21 bike/1:13 T2/20:27 run), 117th of 454 finishers, 13th of 46 in my age group (inc 44th in the swim, 3rd on the bike, 4th on the run)
Previous results: 2010 1:09:28 (16:08 at exit of T1/32:12 ride/1:48 T2/19:19 run), 203rd of 492 finishers, 172nd of 316 males, 19th of 39 40-44 yo males
Notes: Swim was from the south (bridge side) this year, compared to from the north in 2010, and due to late start much less current evident.  Ride leg unchanged, Garmin measured as 17.56km (compared to 17.98km for 2010 for the same course).  Run leg had additional turn after start that resulted in additional distance of approximately 200-250 metres.
Comments:
Left home just before 5am after rising at 4:30 for toast and coffee.  Easy drive up, took a touch over an hour.  Pretty much ideal conditions to start with small waves for the swim.  Water cool (but warmer than Jindalee Pool!), had a little touch of a stinger behind the right knee.  Felt I gave a good strong effort in the swim although felt it took a little while to find my stroke after the rush of the start (start was in the water).  Managed to catch a few in the last 100 metres of the swim and the run to transition.  Declined drink on entry to transition, may consider next time to ensure salt water is out of my mouth, regretted it later when water had run out on the run.
T1 went well, with helmet, race number and shoes well placed to get on the bike quickly.  No gloves, socks or glasses taken.  Had a little trouble mounting the bike quickly but actually managed to pass a guy having trouble with a flying mount.  New 'TT' position in Giant felt fast, generally between 36 to 40 km/j (average speed was around 36).  Copped a bug in the right eye near the end of the first lap, may consider glasses next time.  Did not take drink bottle on bike, will need to do so for Noosa.  Felt like I passed a lot of MM competitors on this stage, and managed to hold on to a couple of competitors from the following wave who had caught up on the swim.
Came into T2 with a slightly less than graceful entry but okay.  Was wondering if I might have overcooked it a bit on the ride.  T2 went well, orderly rack of bike, remove helmet, shoes, and put on Saucony Hattoris.
Felt I probably started the 5k a bit hot and took a little time to settle down.  Drink stations out of water, not refilled during run.  Headed out initially at 3:48 pace but this settled back to 3:51 pace, before ebbing to 3:54 and then back to 3:53 over the last 1km.  Usual dodge and weave on the run leg, felt I was running hard up on my abilities and was thankful to get to the finish holding on to pace.  Felt quite cooked at the end - was quite warm, with strong sun, had a sweat on for quite a while.
Had been targeting 1:05 and suspect if swim conditions were comparable and the run the same as 2010 would have gone well under, possibly giving 1:04 a bit of a fright. Felt I gave a good honest account of myself and was very pleased with the rapid transitions.  Only concerns are blisters on the left ankle and right achilles.  Nipple tape under tri-suit worked perfectly.
Takeaways:
Consider socks or tape for feet for Noosa.  Hattoris worked well (no laces, only velcro).  Sunglasses for bike/run.  Sunscreen for Noosa.  Transitions worked very well. Need to settle and get rhythm for swim going earlier.  Consider sports drink bidon.  Consider taking water at T1 or when starting bike leg to wash salt out of mouth.  Operating multi-sport function on Garmin correctly.
