Training has gone well with no injury since the Sydney Running Festival (touch wood).
My long run is up to 15km's and I'm doing about 34km's a week.
We did the Brighton Dash on the weekend, 10km's of flat course and my first proper 10km race. I was very excited as this was my first aim when I started running, to do a 10km race. I didn't know what to aim for not having run a 10k race before and only having done it in practice at 55mins. I guessed I should do it in 52 but I dreamed of beating 50mins.
The weather, the track and the fact it wasn't as busy as the Syd Festival meant conditions were perfect. I decided to start out at the same pace I'd done my last 5km trial in, 5min/km. I did the first few at 4:47 and wondered when I would hit the wall. I found it all sorts of tough around 7-8km's but a random supporter gave me some encouragement and a bit of a kick up the bum from myself meant I kept up the pace. The 8th km was 5 mins and the 9th km was 5:17 or so, the rest were under 5.
I ended up with a 48:27. I was so stocked! I'd done my first 10km race, my first running goal and I'd done it much faster than I would have ever expected.
I think fondly now back to when I could only get 60 seconds out of myself on the treadmill. I thought smoking had ruined any chance of being fit again, that my lungs were buggered. Yesterday I felt for the first time that this may well be completely wrong, I ran that race breathing real hard the whole way, so maybe I can be properly fit again.
I can't wait for the next one. I'm overseas in a couple of weeks till mid November so just need to try to maintain the training while on holidays so I don't lose too much fitness and I have my eye on the Balmain run early December or failing that I might enter the next Sydney Running Clinic one.
Looking to meet up with a club too so might head over to the Woodstock Runners Thursday night session when I get back from the holiday
