Today a new marathon for the collection, at Tanunda in South Australia.
I was not surprised to run into several friends from Victoria, with the Williamstown Marathon scheduled for today having been cancelled. My main fear for today was rain but we were lucky and the forecast showers never eventuated.
It seemed to me that everyone shot off from the gun as if we were in a 10k race, but maybe I was just lethargic after my drive across from Melbourne. Anyway I had plenty of time to ponder my slow speed as I saw the rest of the field disappear into the distance. Pretty soon I was almost in last place, and I fell in with John Twartz from Adelaide who, like me, did it want to be absolutely at the rear. We proceeded to run the rest of the marathon together, until 40k.
I was worried about spoiling my race by running too fast in the early stages, as a response to being at the back, and fortunately my day turned out ok by the late stages, when I felt good and was able to have a burst of speed for the final kilometres.
The vineyards looked fairly bleak with this being virtually winter and there was no wine tasting at the aid stations. In the afternoon I went port tasting before collapsing for a long rest in front of the tv.
I think I will be stopping at every bakery between the Barossa and Melbourne tomorrow. My excuse will be needing to stretch my legs, but that's a rather transparent one.
