Got the entry form in the mail yesterday.  Am hoping that this Canberra will make it 3 years in a row.

Last year, my son did  the kids Marathon.  This year my Wife would lie to do the 5k.

It's turning into a real family affair.

Just tried to book accommodation at Rydges (Capital Hill) and it's already booked out for marathon weekend. Must be a good turnout expected or everyone is booking early.

We have booked the Griffin Hotel @ Kingston for a few nights. Not cheap but looks very comfortable and close to the action.

Canberra 50 is on my to run list , soon after 6FT, as part of the lead up to TNF 100.

Realistically, i know i wouldn't be doing a fantastic time for the 42km (+.195), not to say i will be agonising another 8km there after. I anticipate 6FT will really buggered me in terms of fatigue.

Having recently sold myself to a bank (started a mortgage!!), budget is an issue.

Should i simply skip it (save the drive to canberra, save the YHA hostel cost, save the entry fee, save the weekend away from Mrs) and just spent $10 of fuel and drive to Berowra and do two laps of the Black stump run (which one lap almost killed me, and it took me 3hrs47mins!!!) Or would a proper preparation to TNF 100 requires a race like event like Canberra?

I've up my LSD to 30km each week, thus averaging 70km a week. Should peak soon (hopefully not too soon)

Any thoughts any one?

What is your biggest weeks you have planned before TNF 100?

Try to get a minimum of 3 X 36-40KM Long runs in before 6' Track.
Have a nice rest after 6' track and bobs your uncle.

Did you actually speak to them on the phone?

Last year I tried to book online and it said they were totally booked out but on the off chance I decided to ring them and didn’t have any trouble getting a room.

Yep, first tried to book online, then rang them to double check.  I thought at first only the 'special price' rooms were unavailable but according to the receptionist, the entire hotel has been booked out that weekend.  No problem, have since booked at the Telopea Park Inn.

Hey Ploddy - is that the Rydges at Capital Hill or the one at Lakeside? If the latter, we are booked there!  :)

Good stuff Plod - Capital Hill Rydges is right at the Start/Finish. It's the place to be for the after-race drinks.

Seems that they have had a few cancellations. Tried to make a reservation a few weeks ago, both online and by phoning direct, as a Rydges Priority Guest member, at Capital Hill. No luck though - was informed by the receptionist that Capital Hill was absolutely fully booked for the weekend. And that included the Honeymoon Suite  :)  So, ended up booking at Lakeside Rydges.

Am assuming that you DID book for the Marathon weekend?  :D

Am looking forward to the 50km event, hopefully faring a lot better than last year, when I came off Six Foot Track and then 100km Melbourne Trailwalker feeling worse for wear.

As Tesso said last year, "50km: it's the new marathon distance".

Yep, definitely marathon weekend 12-13 April.... *frantically checking race calendar*

You'll fare just fine, Bandanna, what with your new training partner an' all!!  :p

OK, I am back to training after C2K but and a big but.

I am finding it really hard to do any kind of speed I can do my normal runs at just below 5MPK pace but if I try running at 4:30 per K pace it all falls a part quickly.

Some ideas:
Maybe it is because the hot/humid weather has hit Sydney.
Maybe still recovering from C2K, still need more rest.
Maybe I am just a bit sick.

Ideas of something I could try or do to change this.

My target was going to be 6' Track Marathon then a sub 3:00 Canberra Marathon but not looking good at this moment.
Eagle and others aiming for similar how is your training going time/speed wise?

Hey all,
glad to see my name up on the web as an entrant!!! Really getting excited now, training going well, have down loaded some audio books which help me pass the time as i run! On the accommodation issue any ideas for a place that offers late checkout and is family (wife and two kids under 12) friendly, everything i try is booked out or too expensive....
Cheers
Nick

:p

An injury  :D  that has not been confirmed yet as I am away from Sydney. I suspectwhat it is but will need it confirmed by some tests when I get back to Sydney. It may need 6/8 weeks of no running but I will be at the start but not on the 3 hour bus. I have run a 3.45 marathon with a longer layoff and shorter preparation - so I should be able to do it again. :)

Newbie here to both the board and marathons, though I've been lurking awhile.

Have been training for the Canberra Marathon 08 since early December and, if all goes well, I'll be lining up for it too.

I'm training for a 3:50 - 4:00 finish.

So Eagle, I suppose that means we may be able to spend some time running together  :D Can you do a 3.55 instead of 3.45 to keep me fresh for Boston  :p  Really hope you recover quickly, you must be going nuts.
Gronk, thanks for the tip will be staying at the Griffin Hotel Sat/Sunday nights.
Seb, will catch up with you down there, if not before........ or will we see each other at 6ft???????? :)

If only they were! Alas, mine are shorter and, er, according to my GP, 'boy legs' on account of the muscles we women aren't supposed to develop through running.

Welcome to coolrunning shwi-hope you enjoy it here.  I'm also hoping to enter Canberra for my first marathon.  Training pretty hard at the moment while getting over an achillies injury.  Funnily enough it doesn't play up when I run, only when I stand still.
Being my last <20km run was the 1/2 marathon at Melbourne, I went for a 20km run last Tuesday to make sure I wasn't kidding myself.  All seems fine and I'll attempt 25km for my long run Sunday.  If I can build my long run up to over 30km by mid/late February then I'll send my entry in.  If not, I'll see some of you at Gold Coast!  My confidence is high at the moment so I think I'll be at Canberra.

Too early to call, but I am being a good girl and completing my speed work for the first time ever. Fingers crossed it pays off and I can prove my first sub-three wasn't a fluke.
Brick - hope the injury turns out to be nothing much and you can still cross the line in 2:XX:XX.

You get any faster any you will run away from me again.

I've decided to drop Six Foot this year and concentrate on the sub 3hr at Canberra. After 3:03.28 at Canberra and 3:03.23 at Sydney I find myself a lot faster over shorter distances than I was before Sydney.
I figure I am in with a good chance.
I am still doing the 50k if they don't stick me on a drip after the Marathon finish.

Three months to go and I've racked up half a dozen 30+k training runs. Just have to go longer and faster now.

Hope everyone is enjoying the training.

Looking at the training you have been doing and your times in the shorter distances I have no doubt you will be under 3 hours.  Just hope I can keep up with you.

There is no online entries for Canberra. You've either got to mail or fax your entry.

I'm still debating this one, working for my church now may mean that I won't be able to get out to Canberra, but also I was a bit slack with my running post-Canberra last year (with getting that youngest ever 50k finisher record my goal for a few years) and I'm thinking I want to make getting my half time down a focus for 08 (partly an economic decision). But I'm training for it and seeing how I feel, the fact that this traditionally the first week of football season, which I rely on for money, may rule me out but we'll see, I was able to back up for round 2 last year.

Good stuff. Jack Daniels has had a huge influence on my running. Jim Beam too.

We have booked the Griffin Hotel @ Kingston for a few nights. Not cheap but looks very comfortable and close to the action.

Also booked the Griffin Hotel - the lady on reservations was really helpful and upgraded our room to include a spa, she said I'd probably need it !!

So on Monday you will post your new 10KM PB time?

i was on track for a solid 10K pb as the runner in a team olympic tri event at 9.5 k, when, all of a sudden!!!!! the race finished.. the course was half a klick short.

I listened at the briefing, i read the blurb on the website and at the race and i didn't know.. so a bit bummed out about that.  36.08 for 9.5k which works out to be about 38mins for 10k, but i guess i wont be claiming it since i haven't actually done it!!  but at least it shows i'm on track for canberra, and thats really what i wanted..

also, on parts of the course was a walking race with half a dozen current and ex-olympians, and i gotta say, they were flying!!  pretty rough for some of the tri guys to be overtaken by walkers

Hi all-I downloaded the entry for Canberra (getting closer to that commitment!) and noticed that marathoners can run one of the shorter races held the evening before at no charge.  Is anyone doing this?  I was thinking of doing the 5km but at a slow pace just for a bit of a stretch and to soak up some atmosphere.  I know Mrs Wombat will do one of them as well.  Possibly the wombrats as well.  What I dont know is is it a good idea to run the evening before your first marathon?  I'd run with one of the wombrats to make sure I didn't overdo it but there's still the risk of injury.
And while I'm asking what peoples plans are, is anyone going to the Pasta Party?  Or is someone organising anything else?  Just curious before I fork over my hard earned cash.

I am in for the 5KM as well as the Marathon.  As you mentioned, just to soak up some atmosphere.  Also I like to have a nice run the day before a race.  It seems to wake me up a bit.

wombatoutofhell,
Given it's your first marathon, if you run the 5k the day before, I'd take it really slow - as in about as much effort as a walk - you'll need all the energy you can get the next morning! Better yet, skip it, and cheer your heart out for your family, so that they'll do the same for you the next morning!

Stay focused, and good luck!

I plan to run the 5k with one of my kids, as well as the marathon.  The 5k should be nice and slow.

Wombat, far be it for me to comment, being a complete "all the gear and no idea" kinda girl, but personally, I would rather save myself for the Big One.  Plus, if you cheer on your family, you can also cheer me in the 10km

If I do the 5km fast enough, I can still cheer for all the family and you!
I'll say on my entry i'm doing 5km-if I dont I'm thinking it really makes no difference.
I wont comment about you saving yourself for the big one.  There's just too many lines.
