I've spent the last 6 months preparing for this journey and I'm wondering what one does after running a marathon, I know I have several options  but was wondering what others will be doing, I do want to keep my fitness up and will hopefully devise a plan so this will happen.

Did the Perth marathon, will do the C2S Half and possibly the Freo Half and then probably cut down my training slightly for a few weeks and then start trainig again to prepare a few shorter races between now and the end of the year!  Why not check the WAMC calendar, there are quite a few different races left between now and the end of the year, you might find something to your liking! :)

I will hopefully make it to this one, then the Melbourne Marathon and then after that I might sit around watching telly and eating white chocolate and drinking  wine.

Fremantle Half for me on the 20 September - hang on that is like 3  weeks after the marathon  :D - maybe I'll see how I pull up before entering.
Then if I can still walk  :D  it will be some of the smaller runs on the WMAC calender - like the Fremantle fun run, Deepwater Point Run etc, while trying to loose a few kilos.  And then after Christmas when the kilos have somehow re-appeared as they do.....  :)  I am going to aim for the Great Ocean Road Marathon in May - but not booking flights and accomodation till I know what 42.2km's feels like.

I have also said out loud that I would attempt a small triathlon this coming summer - so some bike training and swimming is going to be  required!!!

Any training buddies are more than welcome!!!

Whatever you do don't let your fitness slide too much - the road back is long and steep!

I have a crazy plan that I will work on a 4 week rotation of long runs 20-30k to maintain my marathon fitness in preparation for the next one. Would love to go GOR like Turtle Runner or Gold Coast.

But really I just want to do some short stuff  :) lots of 5 & 10k's with Fremantle 10k being my next 'target' race for a sub 48:00.

TR why not have a laugh and enter the Pink triathlon. I did this last year and it was a hoot so will do it again although it certainly didn't make me want to run out and take up the sport. I did the 300m swim/10k ride/3k run.

Rottnest Island Marathon, Anaconda, Busselton HIM with a few runs tri's etc thrown in. Then its back to marathon season.
Scary how quickly all these events fill a year

Assuming I make it through in 3 weeks time relatively unscathed, my next marathon will be as part of a team for the Busso Ironman.  Then short course tri season followed by GOR in May with TR.

i'm waiting for next years program to come out.. I am travelling to Germany around the time of the Berlin marathon so hopefully all aligns and i'll be able to do that. If so I'll be planning my program around running a good time in that.

After losing 30kg through running, i gotta keep running as my addiction to beer and food will lead me to just put it all back on  :D

I have had a rethink of my post C2S Marathon goals.

1. Switch to the Half in Melbourne so I can have some fun as well and kick back a bit between now and then.
2. Work on improving my 10km and Half speed dramatically over the next 12+ months
3. Lose the extra few kilos (that love me too much to go away) for good.
4. (the big one) Refrain from running a marathon until I know my expected finish time is 3.45.

The taper really makes you stop and think about stuff. Dont know if thats a good thing or a bad thing.

If you're not very careful this could happen to you...

100 mile Waterous race at Dwellingup on Sept 26, then Rotto Marathon in Oct, then 100 mile GNW race in NSW on Nov 14, then 47k 6 Inch trail race at Dwellingup in late December.

January I'm going to cut it back...a month of no long runs over 20km...a summer holiday :D

This is my second marathon for the year, the first time I have done 2 in the same year.
Surprisingly (to me) I still fancy a run and will consider doing the Freo half if my uterus hasn't fallen out.

Also looking forward to running a 10k like the Freo fun run.

But, I have this secret hankering to do a trail run and am trying to convince hubby that I need to go down to Nannup and run that bit of trail going to Jarrahwood (? I think)
I think I want to try King of the mountain next year.

Well I went and caught the flu four days after the C2S and am still sick with it. So no running for me for two weeks straight and I reckon I can feel my fitness going! So much for the Sydney Running Festival HM!  :D

Pretty much like Serena, I will be concentrating on getting 10km times down. Hopefully this will have a knock on for HM distance too.
I dunno about marathons, I am finding the amount of training required excessive but I do like the aura of the event. I too would like to beat George W Bush's marathon time someday :-)

C2S marathon, maybe Freo 1/2, Rotto marathon.

Next year - maybe Comrades??? My goal, however, is to one day run the C2S 12k in under my age, so under 48 minutes next year!!!! Or  under 49 the year after, or under 50 the year after and so on. I'll have to start actually running faster now.

Good luck tomorrow to everyone...

I want to do more 10km events and not just slot back to my easy 5km runs like I did after last City to Surf. I also want to continue to increase distance. So I am putting it in writing..I will do something longer than 12km before the year ends!

There i've said it now.... so i WILL hold myself to it! Maybe a 15km as a starting point?? Just looked at the WAMC timetable and there is Deepwater point in November.

Then maaaybe next year i will have built up the endurance ( and confidence)  to tackle a half.

Kermit

Serena,

Swith to the half..no,no,no.....we have the Freo half in September if you want some 'fun', which fits in nicely with the ramp up for the Melbourne Marathon...after tomorrow you'll change your mind..we'll have you running 3:45 in Melbourne..it'll just mean putting your life on hold for a few months...I'll be having a quite week after the C-2-S marathon and then going hard for Melbourne and Rotto...keep running bk

For me its a change of scenery, I'm going to get into some trail running... did a lot of my training forC2S in Scotland earlier this year and it was so nice to be out in the countryside.  Plus I'm doing the anaconda run in Nov so should be good prep for that - anyone else heading down to Augusta for it?

I was toying with the idea of doing the Freo half in a few weeks but   common sense is telling me to give my achilles a bit of a let up and concentrate on strengthening exercises before I end up sidelined again (though I'm stoked it held up amazingly well in the marathon yesterday... all that cross training and non-running over the last month has been worthwhile!).

Hi Thomcat are you in a team or individual???  I will be there in support only  my partner Trev is in a team with his uncle, he is doing the swim and run.  Let us know your team name if you are in a team so we can cheer you on.

Has anyone already started running?

Just wondering what would be a good weekly workout for those  not training for an event but wish to keep their fitness up?

I also realised that moving our rest day to after our long runs could of been a bad move, as we never really got a chance to run with fatigued legs.

Still enjoying the Buzz of it all, get to share it with work colleagues as I had a RDO today.

I was thinking exactly the same.

I'm feeling a little more human today. How many times have I heard how much a marathon takes out of you yet I'm still surprised at how I felt yesterday. I had trouble with my 2nd toe and don't think it would fit in a shoe for a few more days. Aim to run sat or sun.

I'm hoping to work on a monthly program with long runs building 24; 26; 28 and 30 repeat. The hardest part of the marathon is building the base, now I have it I do not want to lose it. Anyway will leave it to the coach to write and hope the family don't notice I'm still doing 3hr runs!

YES! very short gentle jog yesterday! Obviously, I could've gone harder in the second half if it wasn't for the fact that I nearly died outside Challenge Stadium. Planning for a gentle 6km today, as I still haven't picked up my car from the city!! Look out for a crumpled mess on Riverside Drive around lunchtime. I might even wear my finisher's t-shirt to show off a bit.

Regards

Congratulations to everyone on setting your goals and targets. As a coach I would like to suggest that while it it is good to have an end goal in mind it is always a good thing to have interim targets as well. Far too often I have seen people who have set their targets as being a 3.45 marathon or something similar, only for them to ignore a lot of the journey in getting to that target. Quite often what happens is that they skip the intermediate races, because they have to do that training run of 30km etc.
My experience has been that when this happens the runner is likely to be disappointed as they get injured or lose enthusiasm for the event.

My suggestions set your target race, look at the other races and training that you need to do to reach your goal, share your journey with a friend or friends to make the journey more interesting.

Yes, very true; and do some shorter races to spice things and and get some speed.

Went for an easy 8km run this morning but then I only did the half marathon - felt quite good despite still some quads soremess but happy with my recovery so far!

I am hoping to do the Freo Half and then will have a couple of easy weeks before resuming training for some shorter races to finish the year.  Like Loubee I am going to try and keep my long runs from 18-30km on a rotating basis in my future training plans as well as working on regaining a bit of speed!

Go Knoddie!

Comrades, love to one day Geoffa, but next year may be too soon to leave the missus with 2 small kids.

I ran 4km last night, believe its good to do a 3k the next day to iron out the spots.  It hurt almost as much as the marathon!

Just signed up for the Freo Half last night and doing the run leg of Anaconda this year.  Definitely want to have a crack at sub-3 next year, and would love to do GORM again and Busso Half-Ironman intrigues me, BUT currently planning to be in Europe April/May so looking at these great options like Rotterdam or the Aalborg Brutal Marathon (I just cant get past the name, its fantastic) or these obscure Italian marathons.  My wife thinks its a holiday but its really a marathon tour.  The other goal is to do 10Ms before I'm 40 - 3 down, 7 to go (in 22 months).  22 divided by 7 = Pi.  Go figure.  Probably humble Pi.

I think I might get things thrown at me from West Perth andCottosloe   - but I went for a lunch time walk today, and am feeling like I could run again, though I have my sports massage tonight and may be back to feeling sore tomorrow but the aim is to try a 5km flat and easy tomorrow.
All going well I will be doing Fremantle Half - maybe not in a PB though, (Perth Half was fast and going to be tough to beat - maybe they got the distance wrong???)

Due to needing another challenge to train for I've just gone and entered myself in the Freo Half. Have never done a half before so looking forward to it being flatter and shorter than the C2S marathon. Will have to get out and walk tonight to get some blood flowing to my legs and then get back running on the weekend......looking forward to it!! What can be next after that...hmmmm

I look forward to just running. I'm not even going to think about it until my calf muscles are completely happy, I made the mistake of getting into it too soon after the perth half and it set me back massively. From not running at all to a half marathon in 7weeks and a marathon in 18weeks at 39yo was a little ambitious so I just want to get some long easy km's into the legs. Don't know when or where the next marathon will be but can't wait.

Reading all the stuff you guys are doing is really inspirational.

the answer is yesterday..anything from now onwards is ok..only joking..listen to your body..assuming you pull up ok there's no reason why Rotto is out of the question..4 weeks of long runs and then a 3 week taper and it's game on..I'll see you there...got a 34k organised this Sunday if you fancy a hit out...keep running, bk

Yeah Freo Half for me is next...hoping for 1:45, which would mean a lot as it would be the longest I've run at sub 5min kms.

the answer is yesterday..anything from now onwards is ok..only joking..listen to your body..assuming you pull up ok there's no reason why Rotto is out of the question..4 weeks of long runs and then a 3 week taper and it's game on..I'll see you there...got a 34k organised this Sunday if you fancy a hit out...keep running, bk
You have no idea how much I wish I could take you up on that but I didn't pull up as well as I expected..I realise its only been 2 days but still..the mind is willing but the body..I feel like I have been run over by a truck! My knee appears to have some meniscal damage but this was diagnosed without it being looked at properly so I may get a second opinion ( in other words I will keep going till someone says its fine to run on!). Had 3 toenails lanced last night..relief!..but one had so much fluid behind it that the nail bed had pushed back up thru the skin..yum!! Hopefully they will all fall off shortly..oh the joys! So it may be 34km of DWR for me! I do not cope with inactivity well!

Its game on Melbourne Marathon attempt no 3 for me now...
now that the Perth and City 2 surf Marathons are done, and I got some tv time in the city to surf Marathon...I'm supposed to be helping WAMC at the Freo half, although I keep thinking I should try and get out of it, and race it instead, but figure I'd be better off giving the Freo Half a miss for the first time since 2002...as I need a break from longish races before Melbourne...but then again looking forward to the return to the old course, and then there is my 6 year streak since 2003... maybe I should keep it going aim for 10 in a row...;
2003;1hr 43 2004; 1hr 47 2005; 1hr 41 2006; 1hr 44 2007; 2hr 11 2008; 1hr 55
Not sure what to do there big dilemma been bugging me for weeks...

Tried jogging at the AK reserve new track this arvo in the drizzle, ok, but one of my quads was a bit sore, and still having trouble getting down stairs but hope to be back into it tomorrow...

Hi BK

Where and when are you doing the 34km? Depending on leave pass, I'm up for it.

I have just entered the 10km Fremantle Fun Run in 4 weeks.

Does that count as life after C2S

Also consider the Marathon (team) as part of Busso Ironman 5 Dec.

Evening Geoffa,

I did a 10k today and my left calf was not happy (putting it mildly!) ...I'll be resting tomorrow and will see how its holding up Friday..if all is well the 34K will be leaving from Hillarys car park  (7am) this Sunday and then either going north (to burns beach)  or south (to swanbourne) depending on the wind conditions..Trailblaser is also keen...and I may see if the jockster is keen...I'll confirm Friday evening....keep running. bk.

This running is get addictive.

Don't know what to enter next, but I'm keeping up the running,

I've run a few 5ks and I'm doing 7ks tomorrow morning since the marathon, would love to have a program.

I might look at joining a club, which one would be closest to Lesmurdie.

Thanks BK

I look forward to it if it happens. I'd have to get a leave pass on Fathers' Day, surely? Ran a slow 6km yesterday and just ran a "fast" 12km (which means I was huffing and puffing the whole way.) Slight twinge in left calf as well - must be due to the camber of the C2S roads. If we run down to Swanbourne, I can say Hi to my kids and get my Fathers' Day obligations out of the way and have a run as well. Not that I can make it, but are you running hills on Saturdays as well in the near future?

BTW, who won the beer bet?

Evening Geoffa, I'm on for Sunday..Hillarys car park next to the amusements..I'll be there for a 7am KO..and you're right it is Fathers day so there won't be a problem with getting a pass..we'll decide on the morning about direction i.e North or South..Only certainty will be pancakes at the end....I'm aiming to repeat this route with the NSRG group the following Sunday and then a hills run the following Saturday..(Brooking road 3 times for a very hilly 34k will be the go..you gotta love those hills!)  At the moment my calf  is still 'niggling' but my mate 'Big Paul' is also running and he's on for Melbourne as well so you'll be guaranteed some company if I drop out..keep running, bk

On an entirely different note, registrations for next year's Comrades marathon open today! Who's up for it?

Geoffa

Geoffa, Comrades will sell out this year. Special medal for the World Cup and they are capping entries at 20,000. They got this number in 2000. Registrations is open now for 'comrade' runners (people who have already completed) and then it'll be a free for all soon after that. Check the website www.comrades.com for details.... If you thinking of doing it I'd enter now..it ain't that expensive and you can always decide not to go later. There'll be a good WAMC posse going (great people) and lots of great hill training on Saturday mornings...happy days. I've got my up, down and back-2-back medals so it'll be hard to justify to no1 Wife another go..but funnier things have happened...we can discuss tomorrow...keep running, bk

BK

I have registered for Comrades, after some technical difficulties, with the great Homer going in to bat for me. Now it's just a matter of convincing the family. My aim, having run the 79th & 80th Comrades (with the first back-to-back medal) is to go back for 85th (next year) then the 90th, 95th and the 100th, which will be really big!

I'm good to go Sunday, although we are having a big party tonight for my in-laws 40th's x 2. See you at Hillarys...

Geoffa
