I've been talking about returning to the site of my 1984 PB for the last few years (okay, the course has changed a lot since then!), but for various reasons, haven't done it.  Anyway, I've promised my long-suffering wife that this year is going to be my final attempt at personal glory (LOL).  Who am I likely to see at the start line?

For those who have done it since it started at Santos Stadium, is congestion a problem in the section between the start and getting out of the stadium?

I did the 1/2 last year and was at Santos when the Marathon started. It didn't look too crowded - nothing like the start of the City to Bay, for example.

I will probably do the 1/2 again.

The talk among the Yurrebilla runners is that the Adelaide Marathon is timed perfectly for preparation for the Yurrebilla 56km Ultra Marathon. So a few of us should be there.

(Hmmm, maybe I should start to think about doing the full marathon ... after all, 'thinking about it' is what got me to Yurrebilla last year!)

Sunny, how hard could a marathon be after Yurrebilla? No hills and 14km shorter  :)

It starts with a lap of Santos, which thins things out a little and then around a wide enough path until you exit the stadium...haven't experienced any congestion problems.

PS I will be there.

I'm aiming to make it to the start line relatively injury free for this one.

Road runner, I doubt that you'll be held up for more than a few secs if there is a bottleneck.

cheers Dave

Looking forward to seeing you there. I haven't done the race since 1999 so we'll both be tripping down memory lane...although yours is a longer trip!

cheers Dave

congestion?!! at Adelaide?!
I did it last year, and can't remember any, but then I found it cool staying in the CBD and being able to park on the street, hang U-ies at will, and drink in the small town ambience.

loved it, but congestion... maybe compared to traralgon marathon.

oops just remembered potential traffic issue.
i came through the half way point (which is where the half start is) in about 1;29. about a minute before they released the half marathoners who pretty quickly caught me.
now if i'd been a couple of minutes slower at that point i would've been dodging through that field for a while. so if you're a 3;10? marathoner there might be some mild congestion.

Is the course for this year the same as last year? The website still only talks about the course for 2008 and there isn't any specific mention of 2009.

G'day Wida,

I found this on the Sarrc website:

PLEASE NOTE: The following are details from the 2008 event. We do not expect there to be any major variations to this information for the 2009 Marathon.

So I'm assuming the course will be very similar to the one for 2008.

... 13 weeks to go ...

cheers Dave

Yes it will be "similar".

But as always is the case, council do roadworks, pathworks, so on and so forth and no matter how much you liase with them...you never really know what the course is going to end up looking like on the day. (a part of the course is currently blocked off with road works underway).

REMINDER!

Early bird entries finish on Friday, so don't forget to enter this week if you haven't already!

Backpacker, don't worry about it, I am trying not to worry about the horrible way I finished either.

I am just hoping for a PB, which shouldn't be hard because last time I tried the marathon I blew up big time (worse than Sunday) and struggled to walk to the finish.

Hi All

This will be my first marathon, so i have no idea what time i will achieve, just hoping to finish and enjoy the exhilaration afterwards.
Im doing a long run this weekend while visiting in Adelaide, are there are groups i can latch onto and do they go around the city area?

Really looking forward to racing now that im over my injuries and hopefully looking at having a good run.

Megan, check out the SARRC webpage, www.sarrc.asn.au, there are long run group that leave from North Adelaide on Sunday morning at 7am and 7:45am. If you need specific instructions on how to get to the start let me know. (it is not too far from the city, depending on where int he city you are.)

Well my post got deleted too. But I'm now entered in the full. Got to do a lot of kms before tapering but at this stage I'll be planning to do it in 4 hrs (I'll still be happy with 10 mins either way though).

After a great 14ish tempo run plus morning sprints today it is looking good.  :)

Don't beleive it Staypuff.  The drink stations last year had water and a sports drink that most of us decided was given to the organisers because no one would ever buy it!

I will be in for the 10k... had a good 10k at Noosa a couple of days ago but would like a better run before CB (a sub 35 is my goal). I would love to do the marathon but it is just too close to CB to recover in time.

Definitely excited about Yurrebilla - any word on rough number of entrants yet?

I have just had a look at the Adelaide marathon web site and note that there are a number of minor changes to the course since last year.  The most important one for those of us in the HM is a change to the start, we now depart from Henley Beach High School, run through the back streets of Henley Beach and join the Marathon course with 19 km to go.  This should make it easier for the marathon runners to go through those of us at the back of the HM as we will be strung out along the course rather than a big lump in the middle of the road.

For the marathon runners it appears to me that the course has changed through Glenelg North, you no longer go past the old gum tree and cross Tapleys Hill Road slightly to the North of where you crossed last year.

For the full and half runners there will be some zigging and zagging to get around the work being done on the North bank of the Torrens as we make the turn and leave the coast with about 12 km to go.

My training is going well and I am confident of a season best time for the HM and I may sneak in a PB.
