I thought it maybe time to start a thread for the up coming Australian Cross Country Selection Trials and Runners Shop Community 5km Fun Run to be held in Canberra on 8 February 2009. Athletes are vying for spots on the Australian Cross Country Team to contest the World Cross Country Championships in Amman, Jordan, at the end or March.

This year the races will be held in the morning (hopefully this hot weather will be cooler for the athletes in the morning) with the following timetable:
7:30am - Senior Men 12km - 6 laps of 2km
8:05am - Junior Girls 6km - 3 laps of 2km
8:15am - Junior Boys 8km - 4 laps of 2km
8:40am - Senior Women 8km - 4 laps of 2km
9:25am - Fun Run 5km - 2 laps of 2.5km

The Trials and Fun Run will be held on the world-class Robert de Castella Running Track at Stromlo Forest Park in Canberra (same course as it was for the 2008 Selection Trials).

Entries for the Trials are still being taken but will close at 11:59PM on Monday 2 February. Entries for the Trials will not be taking after this date, so make sure you enter. You can enter online here

Entries for the Fun Run will only be taken on the day with a small entry fee ($5 per entry or $20 per family). Anyone can enter the Fun Run. Details and entry form for the Fun Run can be found here.

Nominations for consideration for selection to the Australian Cross Country team closes today. Those who wish to be considered for selection to the Australian MUST, if they haven't already, submit a nomination form to Athletics Australia by COB today. Nomination forms are separate to the online entry to the Trials. The nomination forms can be found at the end of the AA Selection Policy here.

As of this morning we have 87 entries spread across the four Trial races. All fields, as expected, are hotter than the tempreture outside, with Olympians, Australian representatives, Australian Champions, and Australian record holders spread amongst the various fields. It will be a great morning of cross country racing.

2009 Australian Cross Country Selection Trials

Whats the point of holding the Trials at a time that will avoid the heat when the actual WXC is being held in Jordan? Are we expecting a cool day in the Desert? Seems a bit odd to me. Perhaps those that make the team will then train in Heat Chambers in order to acclimatise.

And Ironkid, if you were half as good as you say/think you are, then you would be in Canberra for the Trials. Maybe then you might put some runs on the board and pick up that Sponsor you so desire.

It is a very spectator friendly course. It's a great course. There is a fun run on too for anyone who wants to enter, plus a mountain run on at 6:30 AM for anyone who wants to have arun in that.

I think it's very sensible having the races so early. I entered an 8k xc event there last year. It started at 12 noon on a very hot day in the summer. Of the 25 entries in the womens race, only 5 finished. I pulled out half way as I felt horrible in the heat & thought the risks of continuing on were too great. IT just seemed insane to me to be racing in those conditions. Finally , the organisers are considering the needs of the competitors instead of the media and spectators. When I inquired why the races were held at mid-day in the summer, the answers I got had to do with the media, the spectators, the sponsors. But what about the competors?

There's is no use inviting serious problems on a hot day in the CNB summer. Much more sensible to hold the races in conditions that are sensible & safe to compete in.

Yes thanks Southy for answering the questions.

Sorry I can't answer the question why Benita isn't running this year. I assume she just wants a bit of a break.

The course would have to be one of the best spectator friendly courses in Australia. You can pretty much watch the last 700m of the 2km loop plus the first 200m from the start finish line.

In terms of the weather, last year we held the Trials in the evening, and we were lucky. It was also in March. This time we are a month earlier, but as already pointed out, its going to be a very hot weekend (39 max for Saturday and 38 max for Sunday). I think the athletes would prefer the morning given these tempretures. Its probably going to be mid 20's by the time the first race starts. So it won't be that much of a cool morning.

Good luck to all the athletes who will be competing. I've done the best I can but unfortunatly the weather is out of my control.

Any predicitions on the winners for each of the four races?

Thanks Scotty , i just arrived and  visited the course , it looks tremendous , as you and Southy said it is excellent for the spectators .

   The fun run might be a bit too hot for me though  , maybe come down for the Stromlo running festival .

   The race with Shelley / Birmingham / Dent will be exciting , also looking forward to the battle between Tamsett and Weightman .

    I dont know a lot about the juniors apart from Gregson , looking forward to seeing him race .

AA need the information quickly so it was done in a bit of a rush, but was hoping AA would of proof read it before it went up.

There was some exciting racing and great for the spectators.

Sorry I couldn't do much about the weather yesterday, that was out of my control. This morning would of been prefect - 18 degress between 7:30am and 9am and cloudy.

It will be interesting to see who and how many athletes will be selected in each category. As Long Arms already mentioed, AA can select up to 6 in each category.

In the past the number of athletes sent away for World X/C has been dismally low, I would not expect to see a huge turnaround in form.

Ryan Gregson what a great run considering he has not raced for a while due to injury, he is a very smart and gutsy racer, with a good coach looking after him.

as far as i am aware, the IAAF allows each country to send 9 athletes men and women fully funded. I know AA wouldn't have a bar of this, however that is the rules set down by the governing body. unless they have changed in the last few years, can someone prove me wrong?

The following information memo has been on the AA website for at least 6 months I believe:

It states that:

"Athletics Australia has been advised by the IAAF that the IAAF Council has made an amendment to the maximum team size for the Men's 12K event for all future world cross country championships, starting in 2009 in Amman, Jordon.

The maximum team size now for the Men’s 12K event will be six (6) runners, with four (4) to score (in the past maximum team size was nine (9) runners, with six (6) to score).  This amendment by the IAAF Council brings the Men's 12K event into line with the other three (3) team races to be held at the World Cross Country Championships. "

Therefore the senior men's team for all countries will be a maximum of 6 reading this memo. I'll try and dig up further information from the IAAF website.

Following the post I just sent, here is the confirmation from the IAAF Council meeting on 12 August 2008 regarding reducing the number of senior men team members from 9 (6 to count) to 6 (4 to count) to align with the other races:

Junior Women            14:30

Senior Women            15:40

Council agreed to change the participation rules for the next edition of the World Cross Country Championships to have teams of 6 runners, with 4 to score, for all races (currently 9/6 in the senior men’s race)."

Selectors announce team to take on world's best
Athletics Australia has named a strong 18-member team to compete at the 37th edition of the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Amman, Jordan on March 28.

Australia will be led by world cross country gold medallist Sonia O’Sullivan (team coach) and national distance coordinator Tim O'Shaughnessy (team manager).

Men: Liam Adams (VIC), Collis Birmingham (VIC), Michael Shelley (QLD).

Women: Erin Densham (VIC), Tara Palm (SA), Lara Tamsett (NSW), Melinda Vernon (NSW), Lisa Weightman (VIC).

"Interesting" decisions by the selectors. James Nipperess is the hardest done by person, was sick at the trials and had run 14:04 for 5000m two weeks ago and not selected in the junior men’s race. Shame not to see them select one more person to make a men’s team.

Well done to Long Arms on coaching four people in the team, Lara, Harry Summers, Josh Johnson and Hollie Emery.

Why wouldn't any country send its maximum number?  One would've thought that the overall standards of a sport would be raised by granting as many participants as possible international experience.  Also a good incentive for those outside the top 6.  Congratulations to those selected.

Our junior strength is awesome at the moment, but is it good enough to leave out a 14.04 5000m junior who beat highly credentialed seniors Hunt, Rowe and Westcott only 3 weeks ago at NSW champs? He also won Zatopek, but now he's not in the top 6 juniors. 'Selectors discretion' annoys alot of people, but i doubt anyone could've argued in this circumstance.

Congrats to all who made it, and commiserations to those that missed selection especially Benny St, Tim Rowe and Nipper. Mohammed Alkhub will be the teams greatest asset, he is the hardest worker i've ever met.

i would doubt Erin Densham would go.  She'd be more likely to do the Mooloolaba Triathlon at the end of March i think.

The 4 kids and Mo (my assistant coach) are all over the moon about their selection for Jordan which is great. Ben and Tim are certainly down in the dumps today, understandably so. I am sure Cllint Perret is down today as well. All those guys were very competitive in the trial and there was a massive gap back to the next runners. I will help them channel their energy in positive ways in order to excel at their next missions, namely fast 5kms for Ben and marathons for Tim and their ommisions will be in their best interest as 2009 progresses. A good wake up call that there is more hard work to be done.

...beating Everest at Zatopek in the process.  He'd have done better to shy off sick on Sunday and rely on his previous results.  Ridiculous that the selectors are punishing him for having the balls to run.

Very disappointed for Ben StL and Tim Rowe not to make the team.  Hopefully one of them will show up on Saturday night and claim a NSW 10km title instead.

Taking on the best athletes in the world in a no holds barred sprint from the gun, last one still running wins. Or, she could go and take on the athletes who can afford a fancy bike, have access to pools and go as fast as their heart rate monitors tell them and snack on gels during races. How many Africans will be racing at Mooloolaba?
