As a person who occassionally utilises sarcasm / irony I often find people don't pick up on this even in everyday life, let alone on forums.
I was looking through the emoticons and couldn't see one that could be readily identifiable to include with any  type remarks.  The best i could come up with was   :Nail Biting:  .

In the interest in trying to minimalise any offence I am in suggestion of creating a Emoticon or other such means to readily identify such comments.  Any suggestions / ideas?

"insert witty remark here" /end sarcasm

Best way to do it - sarcasm is not always easily identifiable, therefore hard to emote. Often the problem is the author's writing not the reader.

The old <sarcasm></sarcasm> tags are generally used in interwebby speak. Also adding "urr der" to the end of a sentence might help.

I would imagine that there is already one out there so wouldn't design your own. I suspect though that will thousands of emoticons, people will start to misunderstand those also. Here are some that could be used as sarcasm. However some people have no wit so will take it the wrong way anyway.

Kevin, can we add it to CR, if Gronk lets you have the IP?

I'll be using it!

Its frustrating when people misinterpret my carefully prepared sarcasm, for an inferior demonstartion of mindless rudeness, thus losing the kudos I so rightfully deserved for my original forethought and planning...people can be so rude and inconsiderate sometimes!

I think that comment was Dripping With Sarcasm. Which according to an acronym website means you can use DWS as your sarcasm tag.

I don't use emoticons. Ever. My words stand on their own, and if my humour, or sarcasm, or whatever is misunderstood well ... too bad.

Most people who've been using the Internet, especially Usenet, pretty much from its beginning have the same view.

or something like:

disclaimer: the comments above have been soaked in sarcasm, in fact they are literally dripping with sarcasm. If you find the comments above offensive, even when the aforementioned sarcasm soaking has been taken into consideration, then I am truly sorry. No really, I will now probably lie awake all night lying in bed wondering who I might have offended, also, wondering if there really is a dog, this second conundrum really a result of me being a dyslexic, agnostic insomniac. Again, sorry. No, you hang up, no you, no you, OK, let's both hang up at the same time, you didn't hang up, no you hang up first, no you............

I think you have to be an excellent writer for sarcasm not to be misunderstood on a forum / email.  Firstly, you don't know the person well enough initially on a forum to know they are being sarcastic and secondly, tone of voice is lost.

Until you understand the tenor of a person's wit after multiple posts, a humorous jibe can easily be misunderstood.

It takes me about 500 posts to know when someone is being sarcastic, but then, I am a little slow...

I am a big believer in Mehrabian's theory. This theory states that up to 93% of our communication with each other is non-verbal. The rest is down to Tone, Body Language, Context etc.

This still hasnt helped in having my sarcastic posts understood.

Think I might move up to Sardonism.

A sarcasm icon would have been handy when I  responded to a post about gym membership.

As I recall I think I said something like " I really wanted to join Fitness First so I could get a Fitness First back pack". Anyway, I received a PM from a generous CR offering to send me one. Very sweet.

Now i am sarcastic but i do care how people feel and would not try to intentionally belittle or ridicule someone.  I don't believe that is necessary.  Therefore personally i would find the above inappropriate.

Sarcasm ( a bit lie mine sometimes maybe) includes some meanness.  A dry wit (a bit like mine sometimes maybe?) lets the facts speak for themselves.

This thread opens up a scary can of worms. It is hard enough any other time to know when people are being genuine or not, but once sarcasm itself becomes the topic, it is nearly impossible to know the truth.
