What's the best warmup routine for an event like the City2Surf? I notice that when I go for a long run without any warmup, my left calf starts to feel really tight early on. So do you do any stretching exercises or do you jump up and down on a spot or do a light jog?

Not much space while waiting with the masses. Jumping up and down, gentle stretching and the like is really all that you'll be able to do.

Upside is that you'll have plenty of time to do it :D

The slow beginning with the moving mass of humanity provides its own warmup.

First the moving forward several times before the gun goes off, then the walking, then the jogging then the running.

There is a lot to be said for trail running.
