After a training run from Shorncliffe to Redcliffe a few weeks ago, the idea of a marathon (Fat Ass style) between Brisbane & Redcliffe was raised. A few can remember the old Brissie 2 Redcliffe marathon, with the old route along the road out of the question, the bikeway is the next best option.

Inaugural "Cliff 2 Cliff" - Fat Ass 50km ultra, 42.2km Marathon & 21.1km Half Marathon

Date/Time - Sunday 27th March 2011, 6am start

Cost - FREE - it's Fat Ass!

Place - start/finish from Shorncliffe Pier (Brisbane)

Support - Coke & sweets will be provided at the Marathon & Ultra turn around point & a small supply at the finish (when i get back from this checkpoint approx. 9.30am). So all half marathon runners should be finish by the time i get back. This is a Fat Ass run so self-supporting. Plenty of taps, amentities & a couple of shops along the way. You should carry your own supplies of water and other food. You should also bring along a plastic envelope or something to keep the map dry if it rains or if you sweat heavily. If you want some supplies dropped at the 21.1km turn around point that can be arranged.

Start/Finish Facilities - Parking, taps, toilets & bbq's. Plenty of taps & toilets along the route. Also some beach showers along Suttons Beach for those who like to cool down.

Route - Out & back course. Start/Finish Shorncliffe pier. The ultra & marathon runners will be running along all three jetties/piers - Shorncliffe pier, Woody Point & Redcliffe jetties. You must run all three jetties/piers twice. Once on the outward journey & then again on the way back. All care & commonsense must be taken when running here. Start is running the Shorncliffe pier first. Make way along bikeway to cross the new Ted Smout Memorial Bridge (please keep to the runners side of pathway & don't veer into the bikeway side). Follow bikeway towards the Woody Point Jetty, run the Jetty then where we take the J2J race route up Woodcliffe Cresent, Lilla St pathways then onto beach bikeway again. We run past the Lagoon, onto Redcliffe Jetty & make our way along the bike way past the Sunday markets & to Pirate Park which is 21.1km - the turn around point. Remember to run the three jetties on the way back with the Shorncliffe pier out & back to finish. Due to the jetties & bridge out & back, there's about 9.6km of running over water.

The 50km ultra will do a 3.9km out & back from the start/finish line but will not do another Shornclffe pier run to finish.

Pace
- As the course is pretty straight forward you can run as fast or slow as you like. Run in groups, whatever suits you. Runners can also organise a relay if they like.

Time Limit - None - take as long as you like but the 21.1km turn around point will be packed up or unattended at 9am. This gives 3 hours to run the first 21.1km. If you happen to drop out please let me know - thanks.

Distance - 50km, 42.2km & 21.1km. Garmin & mapping measured. Bells Beach is between Pelican Park & Bicentennial Park - this is the half marathon 21.1km turn around for those who don't want to do the full marathon. Ultra & marathon turn around is at Pirate park.

Course Description - Flat & very fast with a couple of small hills.

Gps - Attached File  cliff 2 cliff marathon ultra turn around.gpx   1.1MB   58 downloads this is the course after the bridge & to the marathon & ultra turn around points. Take notice of Woody Point jetty & Redcliffe jetty/markets area.

Course Markings - a couple of witches hats, removable fluro tape markings on bikeway & fluro grass line markings. These will be for the half marathon, full marathon & ultra turn arounds only. Plus some other red & white tape to keep runners on path. Please refer to map for other km points.

Below images are the half marathon, marathon & Ultra turnaround. (the marathon & ultra are the same turnaround point).

Results - i'm not running on the day so i'll record times if i'm not out on the course (especially the half marathon runners) when you finish please record your own time & email me/text so i can post results. Also i will email you the finishers certificates as well. cliff2cliff@hotmail.com

If i can get checkpoint help at marathon & ultra turn around point (from 7am to 9.00am) i can record all runners times.

Training run along most of the route are planned for Feb 6th & Feb 20th. training run thread

i've put up a FAT ASS page as well.  Future runs updates here cliff 2 cliff

cheers
RBR

There is footpath all the way along there (in case there is any misunderstanding.)

thanks all. Finding a day that doesn't clash with other races is the hard bit. On a few weeks holidays so will check out the back end of the course. Then i'll post new detailed directions & maps but its a pretty straight forward run. I might put witches hats or some kind of non-permanent markings for turn around points for the half & full marathon. After K2D another beachside run should appeal to a few.

cheers

I can put sopmething down at the turnaround, if you like.  I live up that end, so it is not far out of my way.

And I could do the same for the half, since that's near me...

on our next long run i can show you guys the half turn around point. The marathon turn around i will get in a couple weeks. Depending on the weather, markings may have to go on late afternoon before the race or early morning of the race. thanks for the offers of help. looks like a few runners very keen already. i was toying with the idea of running along the jetties but i don't want the runners disturbing early morning walkers, fishermen etc... especially if numbers grow. So safe option is stick to bike & pathways. In saying that i'll monitor the Shorncliffe Jetty on our next run for foot traffic. By the time we get to Woody Point & Redcliffe Jetties they may be a bit crowded.
cheers

There is a lot of heated comments about cyclists here, don't get me started on fisherman on public jetty's!

The footpath is clear almost the entire way, so I don't see cyclists being a problem.

I'm also in Scarborough & happy to help mark the route.  Really easy to follow b/c there are markers along the pathway about every 100m from the base of the bridge & all the way past Scarborough.

A question/concern I may ask with the route is Redcliffe Jetty/Anzac Park b/c of the Sunday markets (kids running around, parents not paying attention, and people meandering really slow).  Just hop onto the road at that one point?

Hi JeShannah,

Like the Kurrawa to Duranbah at Gold Coast we had the same problem with their markets. i just went behind them on the grass. I'm guessing the road at Redcliffe. Anyway we can get past, even if it means slowing down, using the road or zig zagging.

Yeah I think we'll just need to slow down a bit and do some weaving. The markets aren't that big so it should only take a minute or two to get through them.

As for the jetties, I don't think any of them will be an issue. Pretty much everyone there will be on the sides fishing, so we just need to run in between them. We might start having a few issues when this run gets as big as the GCM though  :)

running the 3 jetties would add a nice touch to the run no doubt. Many possible course options :) .

updated maps for turn around points. plus included running of the jetties & pier in the route. So nearly a 1/4 of the run (9.6km), now run over water. With an offer of help from Yochris77(thank-you) we may also have a drink/sweets station at halfway point.

cheers

thanks JuztinH,

their will be a run on Feb 6th 6am starting from Shorncliffe pier thread hereif you would like to join us. i'll be noting drink stops, facilities & shops on this run. it's a 31km training run but anyone can join us at anytime during the run.

The idea of fat ass is no entry fees, no frills, turn up, get a map & run.

may also be including a 50km ultra option as well. 42.2 km is just not far enough for some :)

cheers

Course maps & turn around points are now finalised (see post #1). I'll get gps files up later. The Sunday markets will not cause too much inconvenience to runners. In fact we ran past a fruit stand & coffee cart which might be hard to pass up on race day :) A very flat, fast & picturesque course.

cheers

Great run this morning  :clapping:  I am looking forward to the run in March, not sure if I do the 1/2 of full yet......decisions decisions
The Surf Club on Suttons beach should be open by the time we run past, we must have been too early this morning. They do sell icy cold Gatorade for $3.00 - so bring some change along if you like some.
See you then!

Yes it was a good run.. Not to hot, and good company. Was feeling good except for knot in calf, running backwards more than normal!!
I plan to tackle the 42.2 km hope I can keep the training up. Look forward to next sunday training run. Thanks everyone for a great run.
Cheers Bronson

This sounds like a great training run.. I'm a member of the Moreton Bay Road Runners and I'm organising all the long runs leading up to the Gold Coast Marathon and half.  This fits in perfectly for our Marathon training as I have a 21km run booked for that day.  If people in the club are keen to do this as a training run I may have an extra 20+ people for the run.  I might be able to recruit a few people to help with volunteering as well.  For the half marathon program, the runners only need to do a 10km run that day so would it be ok if we all start together and then they just turn back at 5km's?

Being a fatass, I don't think anyone's going to mind if people do different distances than what's planned, although there might not be any markings for the 10k turnaround. Then again, if enough people are going to do it, maybe it's worth adding the 10k to the official distances? RBR, I'll defer this issue to you  :pardon:

HI CanadiangirlinOz,

i've no problems & be happy with MBRR coming to the party :) i'm sure we bumped into a few of you last Sunday. we've got a long run again this Sunday so i'll measure for the 10k for your runners as well. Even though there will be a turn around point for the 10k i won't add it to the fat ass program. Start/finish for the 10k won't be up & back over Shorncliffe pier as might get a bit crowded. The half, marathon & ultra runners will start on pier though. i won't be able to record 10k times as i'll be heading to marathon/ultra turn around to set-up after the start. In saying that, If i can get help at marathon & ultra turnaround i may be able to record times. The offer of help is very much appreciated.

cheers

Nope, you misunderstood me! I'll definitely be doing at least the 42, if not the 50 (will see how I feel on the day). I was just saying that for others it could be a good option to have the 10k included :)

Runners World magazine has this race as on Wednesday April 27th which is incorrect.

The Cliff 2 Cliff Fat Ass is on this Sunday, March 27th. How a Fat Ass run got on their calendar i don't know?

I thought everyone will be following you for the guided tourPosted Image  It's a very easy course to follow, i'll be putting up arrows, red/white tap  & signage as well to keep everyone on track. The temp is looking better everyday & should only get to 27degrees. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone on Sunday.

cheers

with limited parking (about 50) down at the start can runners please use Park Parade & walk down to the start if possible. That way the general public can still use the carpark for other activities. thanks :) See you all tomorrow!

I've got a bit of a sore calf from kitesurfing today but am still looking to do the full 50km. Can't wait to see everyone bright and early!

good job rbr and par564 and others,
that was my first half-marathon. hope to do some more (my legs say not).
the run wasn't too bad, i was sweating buckets on the way out, but the breeze picked up on the way back which aided me to the finish. i came dead last at about 2:06 but that will improve in time, if i ride my bike. see you at the next run maybe.

Thanks Grant and Kim for a magic morning.

Organisation and atmosphere was brilliant- reminded me of the inaugural Pirates Marathon last year.

My first week back into running after an 8 week lay-off; spent most of it on the bike but was good to finish it off with a little trot.

Next year hope to be in better shape to make a bigger fist of things,

Funrunner aka Craig

A very nice morning and a great run. Thanks RBR for taking the initiative and organising everything and Kim for looking after us at the finish :friends:

I walked (slowly) from the Palace to Margate this arvo and removed some of the remaining signs - even they were so well done up and would have lasted till next year!

Hope to see you all at the next run!

A new 1/2 PB for me of 2:00:20,yay! Brisbane Half last August was 2:20:24. Thanks RBR for organizing Cliff 2 Cliff.
Nice Moreton Bay course and good meeting with other CRs.

While driving to the start, saw a runner along the way and thought she could be on Cliff2Cliff. Turned out I was a giving a lift to.....who else....but uplift.

Also good running out with you MUN. Hope the calf is holding well.

Thanks RBR and everyone else for making this such a great morning! I was planning on doing the full 50km but after doing the 42, decided that that was enough for me so ended then. My time was only about 2mins behind my pb which is encouraging, since I was only approaching this as a training run. I think the perfect conditions helped, along with the lollies provided halfway!

I got home afterwards only to find I needed to start packing as we were all heading up to my parents place that afternoon, so was going to get onto the signs this afternoon - thanks to Uplift, I don't need to anymore  :good:

Well done on your new PB RW! You were going strong for the first half so it looks like you kept it up on the way back as well! And fortunately the calf never became an issue which was a relief.

I'm already looking forward to next year's event which no doubt will be even bigger and better :yahoo:

MUN.

Greatest Fatass i have ever took part in.

Organised better than some "offical races" the weather was nice and cool, although it did get a bit gusty on the way back!!!

Fantastic way to enjoy a lazy waterfront jaunt.

Cheers RBR great job.

Look forward to having another crack next year.

Cheers

Fats
