Looking forward to my first Perth marathon after having run all the legs of the relay over the last few years. #1 son has just started training for the kids marathon with 5 x 200m loops today in his crocs so should be a fun day for all.

For those planning on running the relay the legs have changed: Leg 1 – 10.5km, Leg 2 – 12.0km, Leg 3 – 14.4km, Leg 4 – 5.3km.

All,

I'm in..it'll be Perth Marathon no 7 for me..down to 3:05 last year and hoping to go at least 6 minutes faster this year. Bunbury first but then all guns blazing for this one. It's a fast course but that run back up the Kwinana freeway is always a test and it always takes an age from the narrows to home up into South Perth. Always feels uphill on the way back and downhill on the way out(it's all flat!)...anyway..I'll see you there...

keep running(for 42.2km) bk

I totally fell apart last year after Kep, so it should be interesting to see how this year goes for me.

Cheers

I'll be there. I'll be doing a hilly 89km warm-up a few weeks beforehand if anyone wants to join me?

So I have heard the ad for this on 96fm which is great. It says you can enter online by following the links on the website, I've had a good look (admittedly a bloke look) and I'm stuffed if I can see a link on their site to enter the event. Most people wouldn't know about WAMC or this site. Perhaps a word to them to make it more obvious if it is there or put one up if it isn't.

You definitely had a bloke look as it is all over the home page! Try the top heading as this has links - on mobile otherwise I would link for you.

On this site http://www.96fm.com.au/
I can't see anything. As they are sponsoring it and advertising you can enter via their site, it should be there or more prominent.

Sorry LTLTFC I thought you were referring to the WAMC website. I had a look on 96fm and they have Mothers Day Classic and HBF run but not WAMC, perhaps email them. Seems a little poor if they are a sponsor.

I've just completed my entry, My first ever marathon!

Ran the Perth 32km on Sun, tried a 4:15 km pace but faded over last 7km to record 2hrs 20 mins (4:23 pace).

Bit sore this morning but recovery 8km has helped.

Mulling over goal time at the moment, 4.30km pace for 3:10 finish feels achievable.

Or am I aiming to high?

I'm in.  Hopefully will be my third marathon in 5 weeks, so not aiming for a PB.  Will be happy if I can sub-3:20.

Caulfield, your times are quite similar to mine, and I think 3:10 is definitely a target goal.  I ran about the same time in the 32km two years ago, ran a 3:08 2 weeks after,  and then ran 3:13 at Perth.

Hi Djefa,

Thanks for the feed back looks like I might be on track. Although I've heard strange things can happen in the last 10Ks!

All, This thread has gone very quite...time to 'blog' it back into life..the Perth marathin is coming...look busy !

Bunbury a week Sunday then it's time to focus on the blue ribbon marathon of the WA running calendar...you know who you are as if you're thinking of running the Perth marathon you should already be training...so let's hear how it's all going..

As I said earlier in this thread this will be my 7th Perth marathon and my first sub-3..hopefully the first of many on this course? :)

Yup I'm in. Entered and everything. I'm so keen, I also have my daughter signed up for the kids Marathon.
Build up is going well, although I am and will always be slow, I should be able to get in around the 4 hour mark.

Ran most of the course on Sat, lovely head wind on the return, ran freeway at pace just to get it over with, truly awful stretch. The blast of wind heading under Narrows was equally awful. All good training though and with some luck I'll be hanging out at the 4 hour mark with Big Bert.

I'm with Cocksmith on this one, Bunbury, Kep and Perth. 3 in 6 weeks is way too much to do a PB, but the getting there is half the fun. :)

Cheers

All,

Bunbury done and dusted...time for a day off tomorrow and then it's all guns blazing for Perth..Can't come fast enough for me but looking forward to a few "Hundred kilometre weeks" in between....Learnt a few lessons from Bunbury..there'll be no 10k race the week before this time, Perth is getting my undivided attention. Still to go sub-3 at Perth but have a funny feeling this year may be the one.....

Great work in Bunbury Kev (and everyone else), reading the build up on the Bunbury thread started getting my juices flowing for my first marathon attempt in the 3 and 1/2 weeks.

This week to be my biggest training week yet, hope to touch the 90km mark. My longest "long run" of 37km planned for Sat. I have been doing my long runs on a Sun morning after playing rugby on a Sat afternoon but want to run this one on relatively fresh legs. This Sat will be my last rugby game until after the marathon. Will be interesting to see how playing rugby after a 3hr run goes!!

I have played senior rugby for 18 years and never taken a month off during season before. I think I must be transissioning from Rugby player to Distance Runner!

Bring on 7.30am Sun 19 June 2011

Sorry but I'm a bit new to the whole relay thing....how does it work exactly? Do you have to make your own team of four or do you just relay with any random runner?  Do you have a choice which distance you run?  Sorry for all the questions....thanks you.

My daughter has signed up for the kids marathon, so I suppose that means I'm doing the marathon. Do I need to train? What shoes should I wear - my Dunlop Volleys are OK, but have a small hole in the toe area?

Spookie - I'm pretty sure you need to have your own team, and decide which of you will be doing which distance, as outline above. Check with the WAMC or pop into Runner's World and chat with Bob.

Talking about the Kids Marathon. I have a bit of a problem with it.
So we start at 7:30 I think and the kids start at 9 or 9:30.
Considering it will take me in the region of 4 hours, I will still be 2 hours away when the kids head out.
My 7 year old daughter is so excited to do this and has logged almost 20km so far, but I won't be able to run with her which means I will need to either find a responsible adult to accompany her or she will have to wait until I get near to the end before she can do her final 2km. If I did it that way and she just ran the last 2km with me to the finish, she probably wouldn't get her medal etc.
I'm not especially confident that she will just head out with a crowd of 1000 (not actually sure how many there will bePosted Image ) other kids along the South Perth foreshore and make it back to start all alone - her sense of direction is almost as poor as mine.

Not sure what the solution is though.

Hi BigBert

My daughter is 13, so will probably just sit and wait for me. Maybe we could arrange a creche?

Ok, Bunbury is now out of the way so can now focus on Perth:

Group running is the way to go!  We had 8 runners at Bunbury on 2.50 pace (albeit one by one dropped off... next time with a bit more experience hopefully there will be more at the end!)

Me and Kev are driving the sub 2.50 bus... any takers to join?  Think Biscuitman, makkas?, Liam?, clown?  The more the merrier!  The best marathon running is even pace and NO SLOWDOWN! :)  cheers

Not this year for me Jockster.  I will be saving myself for an attempt at Gold Coast two weeks later.  I will be there on the day as a marshall though lending some moral support and making sure you run in the right direction.

My wife will be at the start / finish area, but she won't be running along with my daughter. So your daughter is welcome to hang out with my support crew until you get in.

The 3.10 is the preferred option, just depends what the body and mind decide to do during the last 10K!

Thanks Big Bert

I'll make sure she has plenty of homework to do while she waits, although I'll be going for my usual sub-2 marathon, so she shouldn't have to wait longPosted Image

Geoffa, after Comrades you may be tired, I reckon a sub-2 hour marathon will be tough, why not just set a new world record and enjoy the day? Maybe a 2:02. ....

Keep running ( faster than those little Kenyans) bk

All, how's it all going? Very quite on the thread again! I managed a 130k week after Bunbury and have ran myself out of form! Day off today before a relaxing 20 k tomorrow early. 2 weeks to go and still hoping for a pb.. or at the very least a sub 3. What's everybody else up to... Tapering?

Keep running (all the time) bk

Last major run tomorrow for me then taper.  Plenty of niggles aches and pains this time round - all good fun though!

Decided that after Bunbury I wouldn't taper for Perth or Gero just to see what impact it has. Concentrating on speed work and one Long run per week. Got a pb 10k in training so fairly happy. Going to set off at 3:18 pace in Mara and see how long it lasts. 42.2 would be nice

If I pull up alright after Kep, 3.10 (very hopeful), 3.18, 3.20 bus is my ride.

Cocksmith and I will be the ones limping to the start.

Geoffa, I know a babysitter.  Kerry.

Cooooooooooooooooooops.

Last 2 weeks have been my biggest yet 94Km last week, followed by a 90km week this week.

Last Long (30km) Run tommorrow. Pushed out a 16km this morning at an average of 4m 12s pace.

Add to that no Rugby for the last 2 weeks and I'm feeling good for a tilt at my first 42.2

Hopefully have a decent taper planned, guess I will find out on the 19th.

Good running...4:12min/k  is sub 3 pace....can you keep it up for 42.2K.? I reckon a sub 3:10 is well within your sights at the moment (4:30min/k average) ...let me know your average pace for your 30k tomorrow...anything sub 4:30min/k and it's game on... :)

I've been experimenting with my new Asics Piranha's racing flats all weekend..managed a 20k @ 4:07min/k average and felt great so will probably roll the dice and wear them for Perth..hopefully the calf muscles and hammy's will put up with the beating but they make a massive difference. For all those runners out there have a serious think about "race shoes" for the big day. They don't have to be racing flats but just something a little lighter to help make life easier. Make sure you try them before the big day and not everyone can run with shoes with little or no padding but if you can they reckon you'll save 3-5mins off your marathon time....Lately the Asics Kayano's have ,IMHO, got bigger and bigger and I've ditched them for Asics DS Trainers as my "training shoe". I can also use Asics DS Racers as these have also "grown" in the last few iterations. Not sure of Asics thinking behind this but by moving to a lighter model I have noticed my average speed has increased.... Please note this is my opinion and if you're happy with your trainers please don't feel you have to change because of my rantings!! :(

Beautiful morning for a run today (lets pray to the weather gods for the same again on the 19th).

Drove to the South Perth and started near Coco's and ran the course to Troy Park and back for a 30k hit out.

Finished in 2:06:44 (4:13 min/k)

10k splits were: 43:05 (4:18), 42:00 (4:12) & 41:39 (4:10)

Ran the last 2km at 4min/k.

Felt great and finished strong, big question is what will last 12km bring?

Is Dave Henderson running the sub 3.30 bus again? I haven't heard anything this year. Anyway, the state I am in, I'll be taking a Big Yellow Taxi - you know the words...

Hoping to;
( A ) Finish

As inbetween Bunbury and Kep, no training at all. 50-70km /day on the exercise bike,Pilates and light weights.
