After moving house I arranged for my ADSL account to be moved...after 1 week, nothing, couldn't get my CR fix...so I called up, um I am sorry your account says that you are too far from the exchange (ie too much signal loss) and you can not get ADSL broadband...OK what about cable?...well, while there is cable in your street, your are in a group of units and there is no infrastructure down your group, it would take 6weeks to 3 months to perform an installation, you need approval from your body corporate and bucket loads of money...what about wireless. Well, you can buy a USB antanae modem thingy for 299 and go straight on line and register, you are in a next G area etc etc...no problem the plan is a little pricier than everything else but I can use it anywhere man!
Off I trot to the local Service Provider shop to buy one of these USB thingies. Get it home...no signal. WTF! ring the provider, you should have good coverage in your area, take it somewhere else and see if it works there, if not the usb thingy is broken and I will send you a new one...easier said then done lugging a desktop around. Found 1 bar of reception in the back yard...not enough to connect...then 2 bar by the front room window...that was enough to connect but the reception wasn't good enough to maintain the connection long enough to register and sign up online! We live in a blackspot! AAARRRGGGHHH!!!! what age do we live in where living in the middle of the suburbs you can't get access to the internet!!!!!! How on Earth am I going to keep up my blog and CR surfing? Anyone had similar experience with Satelite broadband? I am going to buy the antanae extension accessory today to try and improve the reception. Thanks for letting me vent my frustration. -------------------- |

Simlin, that's ugly!
Is there an extention aerial for the "USB antenae modem thingy" that you could toss up on the roof and run the cable down and in through the window? There will almost certainly be body corporate issues there I know, but it's worth a try... -------------------- If he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly...

try one of the alternative adsl providers. you'll find that the loss tolerances are more generous and you may be in their adsl coverage area.

Yeah, Telstra have been promoting the crap out of their Next G network but it has ages to go before it's worth using. I would have checked out one of the other wireless providers like Unwired or something else.
Virtual, I'm pretty sure most ADSL providers are limited to the same problems as telstra. Although some offer their own ADSL it still uses the same copper to the houses and offer similar guarentees to telstra. -------------------- Someday you will die somehow and some thing's going to steal your carbon.

fpt, it's well known in the industry that the db loss tolerances that telstra operate to are tighter than the upstarts. Telstra have been talking about relaxing them for years. cheers Brendan

I am a little too financially invested in this next G wireless thing at the moment, but if things don't improve next week with the antennae I am trying to organise, I may take the 10 day money back guarantee on offer and investigate the other ADSL option...any recommendations of lower tolerance limit ISPs?

Not sure, I was turned down by one ISP for being to far from the exchange, but was able to get cable at one address. As with all things broadband you can check out the CR equivalent in the IT world www.whirlpool.net.au. It's got a fair amount of info and some in the forums, although the forums are frequented by more rowdy types than you get here -------------------- Someday you will die somehow and some thing's going to steal your carbon.

OK after a little improvising, my antennae is hooked up and bingo...three bars of reception where before there was none. Finally...I am glad that worked, I feared I may be bald by next year.
