The next Coastal Classic will be Saturday 18th June 2011 (rained out - rescheduled to Saturday 10th September).
Its unfortunate to have it in winter but despite trying, the RNP NPWS have only given us the one option - we tried to get another month but that's all that's available.

I do hear that the field size has been increased to 400 runners from 300, so that's good news.

Awesome that it will be run again - the 2010 event was excellent.  Have any track improvements been possible with the money raised from the event?  Haven't been out on the Coast Track since this years event.

After the damn hot day was got this year, a winter run will be a nice change.  I saw one guy who'd run out of water drinking from the creek coming out of Marley- that would be some of the nastiest water around....

knowing the pace the parks work, I wouldn't expect any track upgrades yet. I certainly haven't seen any and I ran the complete route last week.

Drinking that water is bad news waiting to happen!!!

Hey Nick, congrats on the top 10 finish in the Glenbrook. Sounds like you are in pretty good shape for B2H. Speaking of water in the RNP, so far, I have not been game to drink from any of the water sources in the RNP. Perhaps I'm being to risk adverse!!

Glad to hear that the Coastal Classic is back in 2011. It has to be one of the most spectacular tracks in NSW. No local bias of course!!

I'm pencilling this one into my diary for June.

I don't rely on it but i've drunk water from those creeks many a time without any issues and wouldn't hesitate to again. The RNP backs onto major Sydney water catchment areas and there isn't much human settlement around where a lot of those creeks spring from. It's a long way between drinks on the Coast track, literally

Thanks Justin - pretty happy with the Glenbrook run - it makes the training easy when you can see the results.  B2H looks like a damn hard run - hoping the temps aren't too extreme.

Hope your training is going well.  Whats the next event?

I got out for a brutal 46k in the Royal today - mostly in the western part of the Park, and then down Lady Carrington and through to Grays Point and home.  Heat and humidity was horrid - took close to 5 hours, and went through 5l of water.

A December date for the Coastal Classic would have been much worse than the June date given - we'd drain the creeks and lagoons drinking out of them. :D

Most of the creeks are ok to drink from - or at least myself and others (many bushies) drink from them to no ill effect.

I think the one at Marley is salt water (never tried drinking it) but figure the rubbish etc can't be good for it. There are some "known good" puddles on some rocks near Marley that are quite good, and the narrow gorge near Bundeena has great water, ditto the creek near Eagle rock.

I'll see you at B2H in January. Training in the RNP, so might see you before then.

I am really glad to hear that the Coastal Classic is on again next year. It was a really memorable event, well run and friendly people everywhere. I'm sure it will be even better in 2011!

I think the water in the Royal is pretty fresh. I used to drink out of the creek flowing into Uloola Falls without any problems. I'd onlt drink where there was flowing water. The coastal creeks would be fine too, although I wouldn't drink any water near where people have been camping.

I'm still pinching myself that I did do this run, the longest run of my life. Three years prior I walked in pain from Waterfall to Heathcote my knee was in such bad shape. I never dreamed I'd run again at all, let alone 29km along the coastal track.

Hoping to run it again much fitter and stronger.

Last years edition was a fantastic event & i thought very well positioned at the end of August as weather was PERFECT.

June could be freezing in Royal NP but perhaps a good change.

Hopefully it won't clash with The Great Nosh as that event is normally run in June as well.

It was actually late September not late August, although I was a DNS last year.

Nosh is scheduled for 5th June, so a good hit out a couple of weeks before the Coastal Classic.  Think entries open for the CC at the end of this month (31 Jan).

Unfortunately that was the only date the NPWS have allowed us to have it next year. I asked for any time but middle of winter. them's the breaks.

Having gained a taste for trail running at the recent 'running wild knapsack 6hr' I am keen to give this a go.
Can't wait... :)

I'm in.  Hopefully get to the start line this year.  Really looking forward to it, particularly having seen the video clip - thanks NickW.

Smooth entry process but not sure what half chest size means for tee shirts.  It doesn't seem to represent half normal size, and not the usual measurement seen.  Ended up ignoring number sizing and went for medium - hope I don't need large!

Kev - any guidance?

Was indeed a great run last year, spewing cause will be in Malaysia this year and come back the day of the event so will be over by the time i land back in Oz. Not meant to be i guess.

Nice video from last year Nick and some good runs you have completed along the way. Good luck at Cradle Mtn ultra.

You don't need a backpack for this run. Just a fuel belt and/or handheld. The aid stations are great, a good idea to take a gel or two with you to start with & salt caps. Take on more fuel at the aid stations & keep moving. The hill after Garrie Beach is tough but a good climb, once over that it is just a fantastic flowing run over awesome terrain.

I haven't walked at all in all my other races thus run, but in the coastal classic I was walking in the first kilometre. The first hill is from hell.

Straight from the organisers. 95% full now.

I don't want people to miss out who are not in the ultra runninng / trail running fraternity.

There will many triathletes competing. The Sutherland Shire people are raving about this event.

There will be many road runners also who are crossing over to trails.

Really cant wait for this event. Just hope it is not called off due to the weather, as it has cost me $400 in accommodation at Cronulla for the weekend. Shame I lived there for 15 years, but haven't been back for a few.

just wondering if there is a mandatory item list for this event.

found the larger salomon xa20 backpack difficult to run with at mt solitary, considering it was 1/2 empty. so looking for a smaller one.

What do I take with me out on the course?Three water stations will be positioned around the course where runners can fill up with water and sports drinks. There will also be a selection of sliced fruit such as watermelon, banana and oranges available at the water stations so take that into consideration when planning your nutrition strategy.

There will be no cups at the aid stations so you MUST take a bottle or other drinking container with you. Please be sun smart - much of the route is exposed and even on cloudy days you can get sunburnt so please take a hat and sunscreen.

Doesn't appear to be anything other than a drink bottle or something to use to get a drink from the aid stations.

A simple hand-held will be fine.  Given how wet its been, something that can be belt-mounted to leave the hands free for scrambling and stabilization would be a good idea.

The drink station at Garie was a long way off the direct route from Era to the northern end of Garie, so carrying a bit more water and the start and avoiding this drink station can speed you up a bit too.

Detouring from the race: Have any of those involved walked the course & timed it? I'm interested in walking this track before the Sydney Trailwalker in August. Would it be possible for a walker to do a return trip in daylight? Having a rough time guide would be useful.

As in do a BOB (Bundeena Otford Bundenna) in one day walking?  In winter without lights?  I'd say it would be hard.  Comfortable running time is 3.5 hrs one way (~8 min/km pace), so walking at (~12 min/km pace) would make it around 11 hours, so you could just squeeze it in at the moment with little or no breaks and using all the twilight.

The otford train station is really close, a few hundred meters from the start line. Easy find, just follow all the runners. We got the last bus back last year, and it all went well, a well run event (for the $ paid it should be).

Happy to give you a lift Sammo.  How many seats do you need?

Ferry back to Cronulla is fun.  I reckon a dip in the ocean will calm the legs nicely too

Last year there were buses back to Sutherland Station, imagine they will do the same this year.

Agree with Nick, the Bundeena ferry is great. Even better if you are staying at Cronulla.

Ha ha i don't know about that.. I'm going to be taking it pretty easy.. and besides it might be the motivation i need to keep going knowing that your butt is not too far away lol
Good to see you are running.. did you do it last year? this is my first..
Naomi
I entered last year, but we ended up booking a family holiday to Queensland leaving the day before so had to pull out.

Sorry to hear you are injured.  Again!  What is it with you?

My kms have eased off a bit but still doing something everyday.  Got my half-marathon pb at Sydney on Sunday so all the kms have obviously helped.  It's only taken 8 years to finally crack that 100 minute barrier since I got within 18 seconds in 2003.

Great to hear that you're able to run again Naomi. You've picked a good comeback race! The views over the ocean are spectacular. I've not run the entire course in one go yet, so really looking forward to having a good crack at it.

Sammo - this is tougher than W2B or FFFTM. Be afraid. Be very afraid....
