A great way to start the New Year. Usually foggy early on in the bush, much like the head.
Then it becomes stinking hot on the climb back up from the ferry.
Wouldn't miss it.  :Big Grin:

I'm doing this run on Sunday (18th Dec) starting at 6am from the Community Centre, pace will be easy to start with but building into a solid run on the downhill to the ferry and then good pace to the Castle. The downhill back to ferry will be fast & aim to push the uphill back towards Berowra.

Great training prior to Bogong, anyone welcome to join in.

Cheers

I am in for the Party Poopers option this year as I hope to get home before my 13 year old son wakes up. I usually do this run alternate Sundays when I am short of time and start at 5am ..... any takers?

I will be in again. Last year was tough in the heat!   Have put the family holiday off a day so I could run!  All about priorities  :)  Might need to start early but will wait and see.

Some clarification please... the wiki says a start of 7am (from memory, the traditional start time), but 6:00, 6:30 and 6:40 have variously been mentioned.  I know it is fatass, and I prefer an earlier start.... so... who is doing what???

Rod, Burglar & some others start early - unsure if it's to beat the heat or get back quicker to some cold  :drinks: cans...

I am not sure about this year but I do remember the traditional 7am time to allow people from wollongong and port macquarie/newcastle time to get there.

Regular 6am grouping.  Feel free to pop along Action.  Would be handy to get a handle of the opposition.

6am it is.

...but don't exect any "handle on this opposition".... I am in heavy training.  am doing high miles.  Dont' plan to cane it.  Will be cruising.  Am having a late night so won't be at my best. carrying an injury. I expect the weather will be too hot/cold/humid/wet/dry. Too hilly at this stage. Missed the ferry - twice. Dog ate my homework.

The vast majority start at 7:00am. Great atmosphere.

There has been no mention of the drink fairies dropping off drinks. So be prepared to start with plenty of fluids on board. There is a tap from memory just before Berowra ferry on the Hornsby side to top up.

If there are other taps please post.

Date/Time of next run
7am, Saturday 1st January 2011
Almost every year there are bushfires around New Year. This plays havoc with the run scheduling and communications to runners - as always check this webpage as it will give the very latest info on the status of the run. In keeping with the Fatass tradition (of doing whatever you want) there is no problem in starting early to avoid some of the heat.

Start Location
Berowra Community Hall, at roundabout at junction of Crowley Rd and Berowra Waters Rd, Berowra, New South Wales. This is approx 35km / 20 miles North of the Sydney CBD, which is 30 mins to an hour's drive depending on time/traffic. Berowra is also well-served by a train line, the station being 500 metres from the start (New Year's Day usually has a weekend service). Finish Location
Same as start.

haven't really thought this through in too much detail as yet & need to check distances, but......depending on how i feel & if the weather is cool I may just extend this to 42k as a great way to start the new year - cross the railway/highway & finish at Bobbin Head via Apple Tree Bay - i.e 'Beyond the BTBS'

chances are slim, but if it does happen at all, will be seriously slow

philk - originally we had a run called the "lost worlds of kuringai" but it was pretty tough, so we shortened it by half and called it "beyond the black stump" as the area had just been burnt by fire. The original unabridged version is here:

Would be a perfect setup for Hornsby side of the ferry before you climb up the cliff face.

Hello,

Family commitments mean I will not be able to put out the drinks at the 'Black Stump' this time around. Sorry about the late notice.

I will miss catching up with everyone, but I hope that normal service will resume on New Years Day 2013.

All the best for the New Year, and have a great run!

Temp looks ok for Sunday.

Min 14 Max 24 and sunny. :)

With only water at the ferry down and back, make sure you take a hydration belt or a camelbak with you as you have about 16ks from the ferry up to the Castle and back with no water.

Thanks for all the other years Jan. And Happy New Year.

Looks like the early start (6am) has at least half a dozen starters... any more?

And watch out for the RBT on the Pacific Hwy - a feature every year that I have run Black Stump.

Unfortunately I have to work tomorrow morning so I did the run myself this morning. What a great run! The trail is in good condition overall, but be careful of the loose death cookies on the last couple of kms descending to the castle. Enjoy!

don't freeze it. camelbaks have a habit of leaking and water expands when frozen putting pressure on the seams and increasing the risk of a leak. putting ice cubes in it before you leave or even if you stop off at a garage on the way $4 for 5litres of ice is a good deal (or make your own of course).

I have got 2 esky's full of bottled water and ice that I will put out on the course.  They are only 30 litre esky's.

One Esky will be at the normal place, End of McCallums Ave

the other will be on the Eastern Side of the Ferry, near the water tap.

Be a tidy Aussie.  Dont litter.

Sorry but I was a late scratching - was out chaperoning my kids & others (5 teenagers) and got home at 3.20am. Given I would have got up at 4.30am to make the 7am start I just didn't have the heart (balls?). If I was home an hour or 2 earlier I may have made it.
