Hey Guys,

Entries have opened for the 2012 Cadbury Marathon on January 8 in Hobart.  A few cool new changes include;

  • 12 month R4YL subscription included in the entry for all Cadbury Half and Cadbury Marathon entrants (as long as you enter before December 23).
  • Race t-shirt included for half, full and 5km runners (first time we've done this)
  • Mizuno shoes to give away randomly to people who enter before December 1
  • $10 discount on entry to the half or full if you are registered with irun.org.au.
  • Free BBQ afterwards, with sausages provided by Australian Sausage King Champion - Hill St Gourmet meats (yes there will be some vego options this time too)
Entry also includes use of the Marathon Guru training tool, as designed by Lee Troop.

More info and entries available at www.cadburymarathon.com.au.

Cheers

Richard

Was just about to start a thread for this race.

Great job with the inclusions; makes this arguably the best value marathon in the country.

This will be my first time at this race and I am hoping to gain my Comrades qualifier on the day.

Flying down on the Saturday morning, staying at the Mercure in town and flying home the following afternoon. Looking forward to hearing how people get to/from town and other logistics, as well as meeting other cool runners on the day.

Looking forward to it.

Kind regards

Basil

I don't know if I'll be fit enough to run after 3 weeks playing the sedentary tourist in New Zealand, but if I'm not, I'll certainly volunteer to marshall if needed.
Richard, if you're totally covered for marshalls anyway I could try to organise a cheer squad. Wouldn't THAT be fun! :clapping:

Welshy,

Do you know the starting times for the different events (namely the half marathon and the 1km fun run)?

I have fond memories of this event, it was my first HM back in 2008.  Next year I will still be in USA having run 2011 New York City M but I want to return and beat that hill instead of letting it beat me.  Good luck to all who run any of the 2012 events.

Signed up just after running Sydney Marathon so I'm really looking forward to it. I'm guessing the roads aren't very barefoot friendly. Highway bitumen is my guess. But if it's smooth, I would love to be naked:)

Yes, largely running on bitumen, some highway, some less busy roads. Alas, our Tassie roads don't have the smoothest of bitumen so you might find barefoot a challenge!

Thanks ScottyD. just what I needed to hear. I have a pair of Soft Star Moc3's on there way which I hoping will turn out to be the shoe I run in for the marathon. So i will be able to enjoy the views instead of scanning the ground:)

Sorry for my tardy response gang!

Thomo is pretty close with the times.  Certainly got the full marathon spot on.  I'm negotiating with Police still for a later half marathon start time.  The Running Edge 5km event will start most likely at 9am, with the Caramello 1km event a bit after that (again, Police depending at the moment).

The Hobart Mercure is the official race hotel.  We'll have a Pasta night there on the Saturday, which will only be $22 for a buffet (incl Fruit dessert!)  Then the bus will leave from the Mercure on race morning, which will be very convenient if you're staying in the city.

Davo - a cheer squad will be great.  I'm planning to have a couple of speaker stations with music out on the course, so you can get your melody on there for a kick start if you like  :clapping:

Cheers,

Welshy

Not that it matters much I guess, as they're both pretty close together, but which Mecure has the pasta party and bus to/from the start of the race? I'm staying at the Grand Mecure Hadleys in Murray Street. The other Mercure is in Bathurst Street; not too far away by the looks of it.

How do I get tickets to the pasta party and the bus?

Kind regards

Thanks for the reply Welshy. I knew the times would be similar to the one's in Thomo's post but with the new 5km and 1km events I wanted more precise times. I'm doing the half and wanted to make sure I'm finished before the 1km fun run starts so I can look after my younger kids while my wife does the 1km with my 7 year old daughter.

Can you post the times when they are finalised?

Going to do some travelling with the family in Tassie after the half, looking forward to it as it's my first trip to Tassie. Got all of our accomodation booked as well as the Spirit of Tassie.

Hey Basil - the hotel is the Mercure Hobart, so it will be a small walk for you to attend the Pasta party.

When you enter, your email confirmation will have all the details for the pasta night on it.

Shrek - Hopefully police get back to me soon.  If I get my way , timetable would be marathon (6am), half (7:30am), 5km (5km), 1km (9:45am), presentations (10:30am).  But stay tuned until these are confirmed.

Cheers,

Welshy

I think I know the answer to this, but do Cadbury allow people to sleep in tents overnight in the grounds near the start before the event?

I'm thinking of giving this one a go for my third marathon after surviving the heat in Sydney the other week.
Never been to Tasmania before, so it seems like a good excuse to finally get down there combined with some running and some tourist time.
I also like chocolate, so it's win - win!

Thats strange Basil.  In the email out and on the confirmation page when you enter it should read;

Official Race Dinner

The Mercure Hobart will also host the Race Dinner the night before hand.  For only $22, you can carbo load on pasta and fresh fruit, along with sharing some banter with fellow runners.

For bookings, please contact Abbie Cooper (sales@mercurehobart.com.au) on Mercure Hobart.

As for camping out the front Davo - I reckon the security guys would have you out of there in a flash......

Hashiru - you'll be pleased to know we are also increasing the chocolate content of the race bags this time also!!

Cheers,

Welshy

Hi Welshy,

I registered recently and I (just like Basil) have not received anything other than a payment confirmation via email... Same goes for my partner.
Will participants receive more info via regular post?

Just so you know it's working, at least to some degree:
I entered a couple of days ago and simultaneously received payment confirmation (from IMG) and registration confirmation, including a pdf attachment with all relevant info, from Cadbury Marathon.  See you all in January.

I've entered . Hope to actually make the starting line this year. Last year I hurt my back, I'd already booked accomodation and flights, so all I got to do was limp around and watch.

I feel your pain, I booked flights and accommodation for the Sydney marathon this year and got injured just beforehand.  Went down for the trip, probably glad I didn't run it as it was very hot.  (This was to be my first marathon.)  Healthy again soI've booked flights for Hobart and am about to enter.  I was wondering if anyone has a Garmin activity link for the Hobart marathon or half marathon they could post or send to me so I could have a look at the course.
Thanks
Col

Hello all,

registered a week ago and am very excited to be running my first marathon!
At the moment I am experimenting with gels and sports drinks and I am just wondering if anyone knows what sports drinks (if any) will be available at the drinks stations in Hobart?

Cheers and happy training!

Seeing as Gu is one of the sponsors, one could relatively confidently conclude that Gu gels will be available.

Hi Richard and everybody else,

I am new in Oz and just survived my first marathon. Would like to enter the Cardbury as my second one. As I haven't been in Tasmania, I just want to organize things as easy as possible without car (I haven't been driving on the left side at all). Did I understand right? If I book Hobart Mercure hotel, they will have a bus to  pick us up for the marathon? What about coming back from the finish? Is is far?
For bookings to contact Abbie Cooper.

How is the race compared to Melbourne? Much harder?

Thank you.

Col, drop me a PM, and I will send you my garmin link from this years half marathon, will give you a pretty good idea of the elevations etc.  Lunaa, having just done Melbourne as well, and having done Cadbury Half (hoping to do full this time), I am thinking Cadbury very sightly harder due to longish slight rise, but views are much better, and no St Kilda Rd crush :)  Hmm, and a lot better value for money, and you get a tshirt, not a dodgy Bank of Melbourne bar towel!!!!!!!!

Thanks mate,
PM sent.  Thanks for the course comparison, from what I've read it sounds a lot less manic than Melbourne this year, easier to get to the start and get away after the race.  Not meaning to bag Melbourne, I'd like to run a big city marathon next, but perhaps a smaller marathon will be good as my first attempt.  It should reduce anxiety levels, I won't have to stand for ages before the race, etc etc.

Hope this works, this should be the link to my Garmin from this January's half marathon.  The marathon course is similar, just goes out a bit further at the southern turning pint, and a second lap before you turn left into Bilton St at the same spot.

Disregard the bit at the end, I hit lap instead of stop, and it took me a while to realise.

Detailed Cadbury Half Marathon map is now available at http://www.irun.org....ewRun&mapID=167

The full Cadbury Marathon is essentially two laps of that, without coming back into Cadbury estate twice.

Almost ready to sign up  for this as my first marathon - just need to confirm flight/accommodation logistics and I'm in. Hopefully 8 weeks is enough to top up the training I've been doing over the last couple of months to get me over the line :)

I remember that hill from 2009; I assume the course is the same.
At the start, we ran down that hill...and at that stage I realised that we'd have to come back up the hill at the end, and would need to save some energy for it. Unfortunately I forgot all about it after that. The section after completing the loops and returning to the Cadbury factory area is mostly downhill initially, and the hill starts at around 41km. Quite a few people walk it. By memory it was at least a few hundred metres long, and is a challenge given it's placement near the end of the marathon.

I've got everything booked but unfortunately my foot currently has stitches in it so I don't think I'll be lining up which is disappointing. I'm guessing everything is non refundable? Might be able to cancel the hotel. Flights were booked using frequent flyer points so they are gone.   Might have a miraculous recovery but I won't be any where near the shape I wanted to be in :(

Can someone please attach the PDF that came with their entry confirmation? (The one that talks about the pasta party/bus transfers etc).

Even after repeated emails, I have not received anything other than my entry confirmation. I want to ensure I have all of the required information.

Thanks.

Kind regards

Can someone please attach the PDF that came with their entry confirmation? (The one that talks about the pasta party/bus transfers etc).

Even after repeated emails, I have not received anything other than my entry confirmation. I want to ensure I have all of the required information.

Thanks.

Kind regards

Basil

What sort of temperature/weather does this race usually see?
I'd like to give a new PB a go down there.

Anyone got a view of a normal 6am Jan Hobart temp?

Hi Guys,

Entries have been flying in, we've already got more than we had at the last edition of the event, so it should be a great day out.

Basil - weird email issues there.  I tried sending it to you 3 times.  Anyhow, yes there is a Pasta Party at the Mercure Hobart on the night before, for $22, incl fruit dessert.  you can book directly with the Mercure Hobart in Bathurst St.

As for the hill at the end, yep its there, but my theory is that is can only affect your time by less than a minute.  If it was at the 30km mark, you'd be puffed for a while after it, but as it is, it's when you start to wind up the big finish and most people say it doesn't affect their overall time by anymore than 20seconds or so.

Cheers,

Welshy

Not sure what's going on with the email. I've had no other issues with it and it seems others did not recieve the info either. Probably best to put any new information on here for the follwers. Looking forward to it.

Couldn't find any info about aid stations on the website (could be me being blind!). so Flicked an email in from the contact page, and info is below incase anyone else is interested.

The aid stations are spread over the whole course they are set up so you will pass each station twice on a loop.

Because of this you will hit the drink stations 6x in a half marathon and 12 in a full.

There is one major one of which there is toilets this is in the middle of the course and toilets can be accessed from both directions.

There will be water and GU energy drink made up by us and you can place your own drinks at a drink station of your choice.

Hobart's weather can be pretty volatile, Greg.  Even in January 6am is likely to be cool, but a t-shirt is likely all you'll need.  That is, unless we turn on the wind and rain, when you'll need a light spray jacket over the T.

Hi BBF,

Thank you so much for this, I was wondering the same a while ago!
It's kind of strange though, that this info wasn't in the confirmation email, what do others think?
It is going to be my first marathon so I haven't got a clue what questions to ask...

Thanks again!
