Any takers to join me in running all 5 WA official marathons (unless I am missing any)?  Good scheduling this year means a decent break in between all marathons!

Kickoff in 7 weeks: with Bunbury 22/5/11:  4 weeks later
Perth 19/6/11:  3 weeks later
Geraldton 10/7/11:  7 weeks later
C2S 28/8/11:  8 weeks later
Rottnest 23/10/11

Then if still keen, 6 inch trail ultra marathon approx 8 weeks after Rottnest!

Jockster, I'm in for 4 for sure...not sure about Geraldton..and will do the 6 inch for sure.. Also what about Christmas Island Marathon...??? Will be a good crowd for that one. !! I'll be adding Melbourne and New York as well (and the 40 miler this weekend)...should make my 8 marathons/ultra's a year which is my normal target.

keep running (in as many events as possible) bk

Im in, All WA marathons plus Sydney, which is 2 weeks after C2S. Im throwing in the 40 miler this weekend and the Kep as well. Wouldnt miss the 6 inch so thats in as well.

I emailed Christmas island tourism about 2 months ago and they said nothing was planned at this stage. The local cricket club and HHH usually organise and everyone is flat out working 12 hour shifts looking after all their guests.

See you all Sunday.

You guys both have big years! Ultra's not my time 'just' yet.

Kev - you are just being slack though, I know you love racing and I can see why... After each race: 1 week recovery, 1 or 2 week training, then your famous 2 week taper or is it 3, and carbo load x 8!? then race again...!  :)  cheers

I'll be hoping for Perth, C2S, Rotto and 6 Inch as well as the Ultras, Kep75 the focus. Plan on doing most of the half's this year though as I reckon they make the best training runs, Busselton, Darlington, Bunbury, Perth, Freo (Probably not Ellecker). I must admit to enjoying my speed work at the moment so I might even throw in some shorter stuff.

Jockster,

What are you saying?? Are you implying that one needs to be older(er) and slow to race ultras?  That's fighting talk mon!
:aggressive:

mmmmmm..pressure, pressure...Paris (next weekend), Perth, Geraldton(?), Melbourne, Rotto(?), Six Inch (yes please).  Sadly no Comrades this year, but potentially more std marathons in one year than I've done in 5 years...I must be getting old and slow.
:Hypnotized:

All the best to those doing the 40 Miler this weekend.

See you all back here in late April.  Will be running Bunbury HM as well.

Cheers

nah, I'm not tough enough yet for ultras!!  If I could, I would... the day I get to the finish line of a marathon and wish I could run longer is the day I will take up Ultra running!

Good luck at Paris!!!  Aurrivwar;  See you when you get back!

Great effort Dave!! I had thought a grand slam was 5, but in actual fact it is 4... so that means you will have an Ultra Grand Slam!!

Meanwhile I reckon WA has an excellent running calendar and you don't even need to leave the state (although I am considering a Melbourne attack this year, not sure yet)

ps. Well done Dave, heard you had a smoking hot 3k - 9.20 odd...

Glad to know I'm not the only idiot trying to run too many marathons this year.

Despite a very haphazard summer of training, I'm planning on 4 of the 5 WA marathons, plus 6-Inch.  The one I would drop is a boycott of C2S, and am booked in for GORM the week before Bunbury - attempting the back-to-back hobble weekend!

If the planets all align, I'd love to go over to run Pichi Richi in SA in June.

The elusive Djefa...where have you been old fella.?..a DNS at the 6 inch last year and no sighting since...I can only assume a nasty injury? It'll be good to see you again big fella. Please note I have sped up a bit since we last locked horns so I hope you've got faster...!!

I'll be a bit light on for WA marathon events this year.  I just completed 46k of the 40 Miler, but only as a training run so I can't count that.  My marathon itinery for the year includes 2 Oceans in Capetown, Gold Coast, C2S (possibly - but might stick to the traditional 12k) and Rotto.

Yes, all of the above except 6-inch. I have only ever done one marathon per year for the last 2 years (C2S), but this year I'm going for a few to challenge myself as well as trying to do a sub 3:30.

I'm also doing the Singapore Sundown marathon the week after Bunbury purely because I'm there with work - got to take advantage of that, surely...? Actually, that's the reason I signed up to cool runnings, to ask advice about back to back marathons and recovery/prep in another post here

I'd appreciate it if any of you gyus can advise me on it in that post as I've been reading this WA forum for about 3 years and have a lot of respect for the common posters on here due to the incredible challenges and goals you've set yourself and achieved in the most part, and even more respect for those daring to go out in public in white skins ;)

Anyhow, cheers. I'll no doubt see most of you in Gero.

would i be fit enoughf to run this marathon for a bit of practice.i dont want to race my first marathon and have read alot of people on this site that gunned for a time on first attempt and it ends in desaster.Sooo i thought even thow im not realy ready to run a marathon i thought i could just jog it slowly and learn the distance etc.a normal week at the moment for me is 2 18km runs at 5 min pace 1 27km run at 5 min pace and a 10 km run at close to 4 min pace.
whops ment to put this in bunbury marathon thread

Chris I think on the back of that training you will be able to cover the distance, at a guess a finish time of 3.45 would be a realistic goal.
Im doing Bunbury 50klm and aiming to be around 3.30 to 3.45 for the marathon. Could run together if you like.

if your aiming for that time that would be perfect id be happy with that time.I will bet the last 10 km even at 5 min pace will be the hardest thing i have ever done so the help with pace would be great

22/5- Bunbury Marathon ( all out )
5/6- Kep Track 75km (Nice long plod)
19/6- Perth Marathon (happy with sub 4)
28/8- C2S Half ( Yuk sub 1.40 )
11/9- Freo Fun run 10km Sub 44min
25/9- Freo Half ( No goal just finish in 1 piece)

I figure this is as good place as any to ask - I'm compiling a history of Australian marathons and I'm missing the following result sheets:

2003 to 2006 Geraldton
any Christmas Island results

If anyone has a copy of these can they please email me - ausmarathons@gmail.com

Good thread!

Long distance events for me:

Bib Track record attempt, anywhere from 10-14 days, unsupported. Start date shifted from today to tomorrow (accidentally brought the work keys home and have to return them tomorrow)!

Would love to have a crack at the Kep first week of June, but really unsure as to how my body is going to be after a hard Bib.

Perth marathon

Maybe C2S. Not sure.....

Perhaps Anaconda, depending on the date.

Very keen on 6 Inch this year!

And perhaps as early as Christmas I aim to attempt breaking the current Guinness World Record of running from Cottesloe Beach to Bondi Beach (just over 4000km). Current record is just over 67 days.....

Anyway, first thing's first - bring on the Bib Track!!!

3 down, 1 round the corner, then one more after that

The first three came so thick and fast, it was hard to hard to think of anything else. Now there's a bigger break between them, I've got a little lazier. Nothing to worry about I'm sure as I have that good base and do feel like some longer rest was probably needed after three marathons in 7 weeks, but it does make me feel guilty for missing a run here and there. Especially when I missed a long run.

Oh well my nemesis, the c2s, awaits me so time to put the soggy shoes back on and get out there in the British weather we're having

Need to get a second pair of shoes Cappy:)
Try stuffing them with newspaper in between runs but they will last longer with 2 pairs on the go anyway.
I use about 10 pairs regularly though it does drive my wife nuts;-)

Breaking a pair of those Hoka One One Bondi B's in at the moment. Will see how they go

So, one road marathon to go in WA. Who is on for the grand slam, as Grant put it? :). I know of

Grant
Jockster
Myself

Anyone else? There must be a few more? Callum? Micky?

On a related note, anyone think a WA Marathon Series is a good idea, taking in all 5 current marathons and having a points system for series registered participants? I know the numbers would be small to start with but it could be a fun series and a bit of advertisement and (on course tshirts etc?)  could help grow numbers? It could certainly help raise awareness of the Gero and Bunbury marathons

To de official, I suppose It'd need acceptance from the marathon organizers and I'm not sure how easy that would be for c2s, for example

Anyway, just a thought

I make it Jockster, Mitchy, Steve Rice, Terry Cunningham, Cappy, Callum and me. Hope everyone makes it across to Rotto.

Got Sydney and Malbourne to sort out before that.

PS Cappy dont think about the 6 inch, just do it! best run for the year. :)

I'm with you Cappy thinking the series is a great idea.  Maybe a special commemorative medal... not sure, we could look into it ourselves... not sure who would sanction/organise otherwise.  I guess WAMC is the most likely club to sanction/recognise criteria having 2 out of the 5 marathons.  They probably have the contacts in order to do up a special medal.  Maybe we could enquire if it is worth doing.  I guess initially self-funded but they organise it for us... not talking loads of numbers!

Good thinking

We can discuss at Rotto, or sooner if you prefer :)

We can also work on Grant to sort out a Kalgoorlie marathon. I bet he is sick of me mentioning it now :)

Yep, I'm on the 'Slam list with Rotto and the 6 inch to go. (not that I want to assume anything from the Running Gods and thus jinx myself). I also managed to squeeze the 40 miler and 6 foot in which makes it my biggest year yet. Apart from the 40 miler which was hot, I would like to thank the afore mentioned running gods for the superb running conditions this year. Look forward to seeing everyone at Rotto.Mrs Beer said I'm allowed to grow a mullet for the occasion (I had a rather wispy mo' last year)...that's got to make one faster ay?

My attempt at all 5 is over guys. Scan on the troublesome foot shows a break (probably developed from a stress fracture) so I'm out of action and definitely not ging to be marathoning any time soon. So, will recover, then get back into it a bit over summer and then hopefully step up to marathon fitness and ideally sub-3 fitness ready for Bunbury 2012.

Looks like I pushed myself too much this year. But I hit most of my goals, improved heaps, and have learnt a lot, including the need to rest

It's been fun chatting at the start and finish lines. Catch you at a shorter race sometime later in the year

Best of luck at Rotto everyone going for the 5

Sorry to hear that Cappy, you must've been running in some pain with a stress fracture. Give it a good healing time (I was going to say "break" but you may not have appreciated the pun) and we'll see you out there...

Bad luck Cappy, really bad news. I guess you have to just look at the positives with all you have achieved and how much you have improved this year. Are you still coming over for the weekend.
Wishing you a speedy recovery mate.

Cappy,

As someone who has watched you increase your speed this year and run quality races, and as someone who has had a stress fracture, two calf tears and a glute muscle the size of Serena Williams' butt recently, dont stress.  It's a hard time off your feet but you will come back stronger, faster and smarter.  See you out there soon.

Coooops.

Congratulating to all those that achieved this!!!!!! Huge well done. I'll be back running proper in next couple of weeks, a couple of kgs heavier and likely much slower, though I'll just make up some poor excuse that its got much hotter, or similar  ;)

Well done again!
