Thanks vat -- that's set the cogs turning. Now I just need to learn to swim more than 15 metres!

Yeah, the swim thing .  I had a comical book-ender thing at Mooloolaba last year where I was about 10th in my age group in the run, and about 10th last in my age group in the swim.

Hence my not taking tri too seriously.

The Volleys can also be bought with a steel cap - very popular with roofers.

hehe -- if you google kt26 steel toe the above should come up in an online store I think. I think I have also seen kt26s at K-Mart recently, not sure about the steel-cap ones though.

KT76's were the weapons of choice when I was a garbo. Went through a lot of shoes, and kept buying them untill nobody was stocking the 9 1/2's. I remember a running shoe comparison many years ago (late 80's) where they were rated very high, beating most of the 'topend' shoes at the time.

Oi, oi, oi! You'll be condemning beards next!
When I first grew my beard (and moustache), someone said to me "What are you doing, growing a beard!?"
I replied "I'm not doing anything.......you're shaving every day!"

Getting concerned about inclusive language. And the term "political correctness" itself.

I am guessing the best bit of marketing to date has to be Vibrams, sold as a minimalist barefoot shoe, however costs just about more than any other expensive shoes. I am thinking that some shares in the Harbour Bridge are coming up for sale, wonderif I can find some buyers for them?

Also mazing that the KT26 shoes are still KT 26 shoes after over 30 years. I can only guess how many numbers Asics have gone through in that time!!!

Am willing to bet that the average joe in KT26s 25 years ago was faster than the average joe running in today's Asics.

A guy I knew who was in the the Air Force used to run in K26s. I think they were RAAF issue.  I trained in them (they worked for Pete so...)for a while way back....about twenty years.

He used to run about 40k long runs at about 3:40k-4minute k pace.  He did represent the Guernsey Islands in teh Commonwealth Games marathon. I think he got down to just outside 2:20.  He was a seriously relentless trainer and hardcore racer.  It hurts just to recall

Bye the way: When I read the term powerband I thought you meant teh elastic things people use to do various exercises.  I use them for my back exercises.  I was frowning excessively for a while before the penny dropped.   Maybe my head is teh best place for a "powerband".

Headbands, whatever happened to them????
If I can't find my hat, I grab my headband.. I only wear a hat to keep the sweat from my eyes, so a headband does the same job.

Do you find the headband better than the hat?

I'm definitely gonna get some wristbands. I already wear a hat but still suffer from a stream of sweat into the eyes, especially now it's summer. I could go with the headband but would have to grow the 80s moustache to go with it methinks.

Same problem re the sweat in the eyes. I have started putting vaseline across my eyebrows and seems to be doing the trick.

Crocuggbrams - so want some !!  a trend worth following

as a middle aged fella who runs in a pair of his son's ten year old soccer camp shorts (much to his horror) and an old t-shirt, I love watching runners in "the latest".  160gb iPods that are bigger than '80's Walkmans, full length compression gear, double bottle water belts, shoes costing more than I care to imagine - all for an 8km fun run with aid stations that most people take 2 hours to trot through.

although I must confess to recently paying $20 for a pair of running shorts because it took me over 6 months to finally find a pair of mens shorts with some form of pocket - apparently "no pocket shorts" are all the rage these days.  and I was tired of running in my wife's pink pair because they had a pocket.

and real urban runners don't use a camelbak - they have a mental list of where all the avaialable taps and bubblers are anywhere within a 20km radius.  camelabaks are for long trail/bush runs definitely.

Oh mate, you should go to a gym some time!!!  The same people are there, WALKING on a treadmill or chucking around a few 100 gram barbells. They would get more exercise if they walked to the gym, turned around and went home again, and save money to boot! And the same comment applies if you replacing walk with run.

Headbands are far better for keeping sweat out. I have the latest ones with coolmax & I have Pat Cash style ones (orginal ones from that era).

Caps, the best ones are headsweats style ones, they have terry towelling type material at the front around the rim & absorb the sweat.

When the sun is out I may will wear both, a headband and hat to save my dome.

Wristbands are for squash or tennis players, very uncomfortable, I did try them in the 70's.

Also tried vaseline in the 70's, messy.

robertoman, plenty of cheap shorts with pockets.

Kmart, Target, Loes, Big W to name a few have them for $10.

I'd love to go for the headband look, but on my increasingly high forehead it would just leave a prominent tanline stripe that would not be a good look.  So sticking with caps unfortunately.

I use a headband on longer runs, now that I am growing my hair out a bit = hooter and sweatier scalp.

I think the same about the Lorna Jane craze...I am amazed at the get-ups (and cost given ~$60-$70 a piece) paraded by walkers going for a Sunday morning stroll.  Seriously, you don't even need to wear "work-out gear" when you are exercising at that intensity!

I don't even wear workout gear to the gym half the time, mainly because 1) I'm really poor and can't afford $70 for a top. and 2) the difficulty of finding said workout gear in my size.  Will I start again about that topic?  (Hint - I can be very boring).

Almost everything already mentioned. Undies, shorts, singlet, socks (the $2 kind) and shoes (unless on an oval or beach). Everything else is a gimmick, fad or nice to have but absolutely not a necessity.

But is it fun buying crap you don't need. For sure!

My favourite line from the running movie "Without Limits" was what Steve Prefontaine said when Bill Bowerman showed him the Nike swoosh for the first time, and asked Steve what he thought about it.

"I dunno Bill. It looks like unnecessary wind resistance to me."

I'm in Pre's camp.
