Perfect lead up race for the Marathon.
This year I'll be trying to put in my race pace for the full 30km. So 21 minute laps - with the race strategy of "set Garmin for 4:12 min/km, nothing more nothing less, run for 2 hours and 6 minutes, stop, eat pancakes" . Anyone keen to join in?

I agree, perfect lead in race.
Although our strategy is the same our pace will different!
I think I will be happy to go close to 25 min laps for a 2:30 although to be honest I think that it will be closer to 2:40 as I haven't done a lot of long miles recently.
But a very good gauge of where I am at!
And then the pancakes. Mmmm!
See you then
Dave

Yup, I'm looking forward to the 30km (my first >HM distance!), just wondering where I'll hit "the wall". Otherwise, hoping to bang out my expected marathon pace, 5 minute something.

I don't know about the soft option, Don. I think a 5k race can be pretty tough. Which is what I'll be doing.
Look forward to catching up and hearing about your Gold Coast glory. M

It is - as a stand alone race I think it is bloody tough doing 6 laps - but as a pacing run I find the manotony is perfect preperation.

Will probably just take it easy and stroll around at 5min pace. Just looked over my past performances which have been:
2006 - 2.25
2007 - 2.27
2008 - 2.27
2009 - 2.29
2010 - 2.26
Looking to finish in that range again this year.
One of these days I'll have to try and race the event.
If I pull up OK, and within target, I may start to vaguely consider my options re MM.

Fond memories of last year on your bus!
And do I detect a hint of a Melbourne marathon start!!
I may drive on a slower bus this year, just over 5 min pace I think.
But I will decide on the day!

I hope that I will have a chance to catch up with you CL, as well as a number of other CRs, before the run. If I do manage to come for a quick (for me) 5 or 10k I won't be able to hang around afterwards. I am heading off for a few days travel including a helicopter flight over Lake Eyre.

A bit social, but also as it's the first time I hit 30km during the year it's a tester to se where I'm at re marathon training. I do enough races with my club so don't need to race, and while I could do a long run on my own, this fits nicely on the calendar. To me it's a good time to start the build up for MM, and the nature of the course is such that if you get into trouble, you are never far from having an "out", the repetitive nature helps buil the mental strength, and it's fully supported with drink stations so I don't have to carry anything with me.

I'll probably be around your pace, or a tiny bit faster. I ran slightly sub 5/km at the HM last weekend, but figure I'll need to take it a fair bit slower to last the 30km distance...

You seem to be in the exact same place as myself, i'm aiming for 3:45 in MM, my previous PB is 3:53.. I plan to run the Sri Chinmoy 30km with 5:20-5:30kms, it'll be a good run !

Also, with the PP run, it seems there are some who are treating it as a training run (lead up to MM)while others will be racing. My race goal is focussed on the MM, any thoughts on how to approach the run. Not interested in a taper or comprimising the following week's training.

The Sri Chinmoy events are still big enough that you won't stick out if you're running a bit slower
Did 25km at 5:25/km pace today, feeling good, so will probably aim to knock out the 30km at the same pace next weekend. Not racing, just a catered long run

Oh, I am racing it - but will not be doing it as an all out race - keeping up Marathon Pace for 30km is bloody hard work - and without a taper, or the attraction of 'the big day' it will be a real mental challenge - and when that is combined with 6 laps of the same scenery I find it to be the ideal litmus test.
Perhaps the biggest factor is a chance to put into practice some race strategy.

At the SC events there will be far more people in the 5:30 - 6:00 zone than in any other zone. You will constantly have people around you (well within easy sight).

I also did 25km at 5:25/km pace last weekend. Will probably give the 30 at Princess Park a go on Sunday at the same pace, (but I'll be taking the day before off.) Likewise, this will be a training run for me with the end goal the MM.
Are the pancakes anywhere near the track? It'd be bloody hard to complete 30km if people are hanging about eating pancakes after the first 10km!

Because I can only squeeze in a 5k run on Sunday I am actually doing a longish run on Saturday. As my next major run is the half in Alice Springs on August 21, I will probably do about 15k on Saturday and (hopefully) then do the 5k at a 'challenging pace' on Sunday. My PB for the 5k is currently slower than my 10 - so that gives me something to aim for.

I've run hard this week and had a rest today and will do the same tomorrow.
I think I'll try and hold 5 min/km and try and get as close to 2:30 as possible.
Confident for the first 3 or 4 laps but not as confident for the last 2! But will make a final decision on the day!
Also, I think the 20km & 30km now start 10 minutes later. Must be a few people running!
I'll be wearing CR cap. If anyone wants to run with me, always welcome!
Good luck to everyone running.

17.5km yesterday - 60 min pyramid tempo today - I may go out for 8km tomorrow - depends on how I feel. Pooping myself a little about Sunday. Like others have said I am fairly comfortable for 0 - 21.1km after that I'm not too sure.

Huge turnout, a few CRs, and well-done to everyone.
My goal was to go just under 5min/k, and despite a shocking (at least in terms of how I felt) last lap I managed to finish in 2:26:58 (chip) which is 4:54. Very happy with that.
If anyone's interested, here's the Garmin readout:

Plenty of pancakes left at the end, another great morning for running.
See you next time (2 weeks, same venue different course, VRR half).

cracking day for it, and once again a well organised event.
I had 2:30 as my goal, but deep down i thought 2:26 might be a chance. Tracking ok through 20km at 1:37:40, and then died in the last 4-5km to finish in 2:29:39. So hit my goal, but a bit worried about the drop off toward the end!

I wanted to run 5:20-5:30kms. According to my iPhone app that i had running i ran 5:26 however it was almost a km short, probably due to the tunnels or possibly poor reception (...I am with Vodafone...) I Got my official time sms'd to me just after i finished, 2:39:17.. A pace of 5:18.56!!! Stoked!!
I used the run to see just where abouts i am in terms of MM, and met goals and exceeded my expectations. Fantastic Event !!

Brendan90, I came in at 2.39.02 (my watch time), so as your earlier post suggested, I must have been running with you timewise or thereabouts (I had a green t-shirt and white cap on).
Looking forward to MM.
