parkrun, the free, electronically timed, 5km fun run, is launching in Melbourne's Albert Park on November 19. parkrun started in the UK in 2004 and now boasts over 100,000 registered runners worldwide! This event will then be held every Saturday at 8am. Volunteers are required to help keep parkrun free for all so please contact tim@parkrun.com if you can assist.

New runners must register at www.parkrun.com.au before their first event.

love the ParkRun concept but its a bit out of my way to go for a 5k jaunt.

will definitely get along there at some stage though just to support a great idea and hopefully i'll get one thats a bit more local eventually.

props to all who organised this

Hey great to see park run is spreading throughout Australia now. The Gold coast version is very good and well supported by local running groups. Park run is a great place to go to test your speed pre race and during training blocks. The course's are always accurate and timed to precision. Cant go wrong :im Not Worthy:

I e-mailed Parkrun to see what was happening. I got the following response:

Thanks for your email. parkrun is most definitely launching in Melbourne
on November 19 in Albert Park. Online registration should be up and
running by the end of this week but in the meantime I suggest you keep
updated via our Facebook page - http://www.facebook....elbourneparkrun

Many thanks,

I'm also volunteering for this one and should be down there on a regular basis. I hope to be able to run it occasionally as well. It would be great to see lots of cool runners out supporting this event.  I think it is a superb concept and a great way of spreading interest in running throughout the community.

Registered as well and looking forward to the run.  Hopefully will be a good crowd for the first run. Will be going along with a couple of other runners so there should be at least three people there.

Melbourne runners again prove themselves to be a hardy and resilient lot, rain, bah! We won't let that stop us!!

We were absolutely thrilled with the turn out this morning for the inaugural Melbourne Parkrun at Albert Park.  Last night we had 150 registrations and almost 70 of those turned out to run this morning which far exceeded our expectations.

Us volunteers were a little nervous at first but happily everything ran like clockwork and despite the weather we had a great atmosphere down around the lake.

I got to ride lead out on my bike which let me get back nice and quickly to cheer all the runners home.

Well done to everyone who got out there for a refreshing run in the rain this morning, it will be great to see this grow over the summer.

Thought the course might have been a bit short, then noticed that the finish was after the start Posted Image. It would have been interesting on Saturday with the weather and the corp games event on at the same time!?

great to see that Park run is slowly coming to Australia.
I didn't know about them before I left for Oz 4 years ago so still haven't run one yet but hear all about them on MarathonTalk.
Looking forward to trying one out when I am back at xmas.

I hope we get one in Sydney soon

Parkrun, are there any stats to compare Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sydney & Melbourne park runs. Just thinking that some (friendly ;)) rivalry between cities may be beneficial to the sport as a whole.

Excellent set-up, with super friendly organisers, efficient results service and pleasant running environment, would encourage anyone to 'come on down' and give it a go.... you will get hooked. Even has its own weekly 'Parkrun' podcast (downloadable through itunes) :yahoo:

I am glad you enjoyed your run MSC, us volunteers certainly enjoyed our first dry Parkrun today!  We are all passionate runners and have really been enjoying putting this event on.

We have over 250 registrations now and would love to see more people heading down to Albert Park to have a go next week, don't forget your barcodes!!  If you are wondering what to do with your barcode you may find it helpful to laminate it with some clear contact and then pin it to your shirt or shorts, this will help keep it from getting sweaty and disintegrating.

Ran my 1st Parkrun (Melb.) today and very impressed with the friendly organisation and atmosphere of the 5k event around Albert Park lake with accurate course and timing. And tremendous idea with the barcode finishing - it works very well.

Many things to like about this, besides being a free event I also had an email notification from Parkrun re my time, overall/age group placing and age grade % value (which placed me closer to the top) by the time I got home.

Met up with several friends (and added bonus) and topped the day off by incorporating my long run (33.5 k's) into the morning event.

Well done Parkrun. Unfortunately, due to the Grande Prix no races for a fortnight but I'll be back then.

I love Parkrun as well! Gives me motivation to get out of bed on Saturday, instead of me succumbing to snoozing. Gets my weekend off on the right note! There's no Parkrun this weekend, but there is a Tan time trial held by the crosbie crew 9am.

Bollx.  I registered this afternoon with the intention of running on Sat morning - I'm down in Melbourne for the weekend for a conference.  So there's no event?  Anything else close to the CBD I can do?  What's the Tan time trial?

Calling all Monarchists and Ex Pats, in celebration of QE2s upcoming Diamond Jubilee come on down to Albert Parkrun this Saturday for Run Britannia, wear red, white and blue and do it for Lizzie.

If Parkrun has been on your to do list then print out that barcode and come for a run with us and set your Diamond Jubilee PB.

Serious respect will be given to anyone who can do it it in a Tiara, a nice frock and sensible heels.

Actually thought the conditions weren't too bad. Pretty ordinary weather on the drive in, and after we got home, but during the run it was OK. A little drizzle, and a bit of a headwind in the last 500m, but after all it is Albert Park (and I never run fast there).
Managed my first podium finish, but the time wasn't particularly impressive.
I'll be back next week for another hit out.

You are right TigerBoy, we got very lucky with the weather.  Apart from the puddles we had to jump and the head wind over the last km it was quite a good morning for a run.

It was my first run at parkrun, I will be there regularly now as i try to get my fitness back from a 7 week layoff

I will there tomorrow for my 2nd Parkrun, which happens to be the 40th Melbourne Park run.
Running these weekly will give me a good gauge on how my fitness is going as I return from injury.
Last week I ran 20:26, hopefully this week I can get under 20mins.  Still a long way off my best of 17:18

Thats no good.

The conditions were much better than last week, good for a fast run.  I ended up running 19:30, about 55sec quicker than last week.  Still over 2mins off my best though.
Next weeks target sub 19mins.

I enjoyed being at parkrun on Saturday while I was down from Sydney to participate in my 2nd City to Sea

It was nice to meet some of you and to have coffee after. It was an enjoyable run and I was really pleased with my 2nd best parkrun time of 7 parkruns on a course new to me and when I wasnt wearing a watch.

It was good to have someone running with me when I started and was last and good to see a 30 Minute Pacer.
I have recently joined a Facebook Group called five30runners for runners aiming to achieve 30 Minutes or somewhere between 32.30 and 27.30 it is a Facebook page for people - future runners, back of the pack runners, walkers - parkrunners wanting to break 32:30 - 27:30 - 5km's in 30mins. Not everyone can achieve Under 20 Minutes for their 5ks.
30 Minutes for 5ks is still a way off for me but I am working towards it.

It was great to finish my parkrun and see Katoomba NSW Coolrunner The Rev had also participated, also good to see his name in the newspaper on Monday mentioned for his unusual footwear.

I had a great City to Sea, last year I did 2.09.58 and this year 2.01.13. I am hoping I can return next year and do under 2 hours and visit parkrun again.

Thank You to everyone who made my weekend so enjoyable

I'm in Melbourne for a conference and hope to make it to my first Parkrun tomorrow. I haven't registered up to now because the Sydney Parkrun is a bit too far for me to drive just for a 5km run, so it's strange that my first one will be so far from home anyway

Welcome to parkrun

What a great day to make your parkrun debut at Albert parkrun's 1st birthday celebration and with the opportunity to run with Craig Mottram.

Enjoy your run and Good Luck with your time

Well, that was fun (certainly more entertaining than the conference lecture I skipped!). I felt a bit underdressed, surrounded as I was with an abundance of super heroism :Hiro: and villiany   to celebrate this Parkrun's first birthday, but I'll definitely do this again in Sydney, especially if the Parramatta Parkrun gets up and, err, running.

I went to the parkrun in Melbourne yesterday and it was so much fun.  There was a warm up at the start and stretches at the end.  Everyone was so friendly, they took all the first timers and told us what to do, that lady was very helpful.  I walked and ran, it was a little hot but I finished and I even got a cheer at the end.  It would be good to see more people my pace down there, I'll keep going and encourage my friends to join me, it's a great way to improve and meet new people. Thank you parkrun. I'll be back
