Couldn't find this race listed anywhere here..... I was just curious if any other CRs ran this event yesterday and what their thoughts were in general of the event ??
Also does any one who stayed for the announcements know what time the 15km and 30km events were won in (for both m and f) ?? :)

Hi Helen,

I'm sure the results will be up on the SARRC site soon. If you ran 67mins for the 15km I think you should have come either first or second female. Were you wearing the pink spray jacket or the dark colours?

I ran in the 15km event and really enjoyed it - inclement weather and all. For the volunteers to still come out and give their time to act as marshalls and at aid stands is fantastic - you are all awesome!!! Was using that as a warm up for the half marathon when the Adelaide marathon is on. Hope the weather for that one is a little kinder.

Stay safe,

Forrest  :)

I didn't realise it was actually on last weekend. I'm on the eSarrc mailing list but mine are garbled for some reason, both as text and html.

I'm interested on what the course was like too. Sounds like it was downhill and I missed it ?  :)

I did the 30k run Yesterday and totally enjoyed it , There was a great turnout and I think the winning male was 1hr 49min. I managed it in 2hr 29min to be confirmed when the results  came up.(Confirmed as 2hr 31min Still well happy with that)

I did not think I was goping to go under 3hr so I am very happy even though I had slight cramps in the last 150 meters.

The weather was really wet but there was no wind so it just made it fun . I love running in the rain I must say. The linear track is a great place to run and doing the race as an end to end instead of out and back like last year mad it even better .

Thanks to all the volunteers who even though they looked totally soaked managed to tell me I was doing well and to keep it up which helps make you keep going.

I will be doing it again next year for sure

Forrest  :D

Hi Forrest,

Yes I was in the pink jacket, the girl behind me was in the black. So who knows maybe I managed a place !  :D  I was just hoping for maybe a top 10 in the females.

I thought it was a great event - it was a perfect day, love the rain! However I am now suffering from ITB pain so madly trying to sort that out so that I can continue training for the Adelaide 1/2 also.

.... and yes big thanks to all the volunteers !! To get out there at anytime but especially in the rain, so that we can have great events like that is awesome! I love how they give encouragement too.

Ohh... and the course was a mix of up's and down's. Yes overall it was down hill but still plenty of short uphills stints kept it interesting and the breathing heavy !! Very enjoyable though from a first timers point of view.

Helen

P.S. Any fast recovery tips for ITBS please send my way !!!  :)

I did the 30 yesterday and also enjoyed the rain and the course. I agree that the one way run is preferable to an out and back. That messes with my head a bit knowing that every step I take has to be done all over again to get back.

However I felt a blister forming almost right from the start and ignored it. It bothered me the whole way. Enough to limp a little though nothing too bad. Until I finished running then it started to really hurt! I decided to go to the first aid tent and when I took my shoe off it was a mess. A shoe full of blood and a red raw blister about 10cmx10cm. I have no idea really why I got it when I usually have no problem so long as my shoes are worn in. Which I thought these were. I can only think that it was a combination of newish shoes (maybe 4 months old), very old Thurlo socks (which I threw out when I got home), the wet and a hot spot on my heel I got from sand grit a couple of weeks ago. Why however I had no problem with a 31km last weekend is a mystery.
Anyway my question is what do I do now? I can't put a shoe on yet and I still hope to do the full in Adelaide. Does anyone have any brilliant ideas. The raw heel is too large for the usual blister patches you get from the Chemist. At the moment I have a sticky thing on that is used for burns. Is that the right thing to do? If I exposed it to air and especially water I would be in too much pain. I feel the need to cover it up though don't know if that is right. I want to start running again ASAP.

Is yet another Marathon kaput for me?

Chilli? Anyone?

Sorry to hear about the blister backpacker, doesn't sound good without seeing it.
Sounds like it is too far gone / too big for the old superglue trick, and the second skin band aids etc if it is 10cm x 10cm  :)

I'd seriously get professional advice after back in 2008 Taiwan's leading female Ultra runner had both legs amputated as a result of infection from a blister after Trans Gaule, Kelvin was running it that year at the time, post here.

I don't want to panic you or anyone else either, but best to err on the side of caution:

Chiu, 51, a mother of two and a clerk at the China Steel Corp, took part in the annual 1,500-km ultra-marathon race, La Trans Gaule from August 13-31. On the 16th day of the 18-day race from Roscoff in north-western France to Gruissan-Plage on the Mediterranean, blisters on Chiu's left foot broke. However, she continued to run and finished 17th of the 44 runners to complete the race. Chiu was diagnosed with septicaemia, a potentially life-threatening infection, and was flown by helicopter to a hospital in Montpellier. Doctors removed her left leg and the sole of her right foot on August 31, and amputated her right leg on September 1 to stop the infection from spreading.

Otherwise a stack of good stuff here and here.
More good pre-race prevention tips here and here. (Much is worded for Badwater, but still good advice).

I do hope it doesn't slow your prep down too much.

I really enjoyed the course, despite the never ending rain. I definitely prefer this to an out and back course. It was great to see and run with a few CRs out there, thanks Ramone & Backpacker for your company at times and helping to push me along. I was in a lot of pain in the last 6 or so Ks, clearly not as recovered from the GC marathon as I thought  :) Oh well I was happy to get to the end and only a few minutes short of my goal time so happy with that. Lots of aches and pains today though which I hope are nothing serious.

That blister sure did look nasty, you did well to push through that, well done!! After trailblazer last year I had one the same size and in almost the same spot and I did exactly what you have done and put on one of those burn sticky things, I found that it worked really well.
I hope that it heals up quickly for you.

Hi all. Backpacker, you kept that blister a secret all the way. If I had it I would have complained to everyone in earshot! I am always happy to run with you B.P and Em00.Thanks girls. That goes for everyone else that I chatted with on the way down to Henley. Unlike you others, I did not enjoy the rain and spent the whole time wishing it would stop. I hate to be wet and cold at the end.
Arsenal, a great time for a great run. Looks like I wont be running with you any time soon!

Regarding speed of official results its been an issue since Barossa when SARRC took 2 weeks to get them out, despite going for borrowed  electronic systems. So I volunteered to get a better system of processing them. Tested it on the Trail Run data and tried for real on Sunday. However, we had hardware setup problems but got nearly all of the entrants times onto the computer. I hope we have the result out tomorrow after the videos are checked against the electronic times.

Hey Helen,

I'm pretty sure you won the female 15km as I didn't see any females in front of you and the girl in black. So congrats if that is the case and awesome effort. And if it is the case am a bit surprised no one even told you of your win.

Stay safe,

Forrest

Hi Forrest,

Was just talking about that....  no one told me anything at the end, unless they just assumed I would know.

It was only my second race so didn't know what to expect and certainly wasn't expecting a top 3 even !!!

I just headed straight for the coffee stand  :D (not a good hydration plan I know but I was numb all over it was so cold!!)

Hey anyway I'm excited now.... who knows, I guess we'll find out soon enough  :)

Not too sure how bad you want to keep running but when I got some rather deep blisters on my heels earlier this year I went and did some barefoot running out on the flinders uni ovals. I am no running expert though and I would imagine some would possibly prescribe a graduated increase of barefoot running on the grass if you weren't used to it. I hadn't done any prior to this but I was able to do my long run for the week in barefoot. I guess you would need to consider the possibility of infection etc, but it worked out ok for me. I was able to run again by the end of the week.

I would have felt HARDCORE with my bloody socks and shoes if I hadn't have cried when I saw it. The first aid people cut the skin off, put it in a cup and asked if I wanted to take it home with me.
Dalton don't you get cold running barefoot in this weather?
Chilli: Thanks for freaking me out! My Doctors a runner anyway so I was thinking of going to see him. I won't cry this time.
I can't take a photo because it is under the sticky... thingy. I am sure when it comes off in a few days it will be completely better.
Thanks everybody. Thanks Em00 and Ramone for the much needed company. Well done guys

LOL!  And did you?   Hope it pulls up OK.

Just wanted to also put in my thanks to the volunteers if any of them happen to be on CR.   Was my first 'event' since the Adelaide marathon in 06 and had forgotten how good it was to get just that bit of encouragement from total strangers to cheer you on, especially out in that rain!

Must admit I found it tought as the rain got heavier at about the 7-8k mark (only did the 15k), but once everything got saturated and I could feel the water seep through the second pair of socks, I just laughed, relaxed and managed to get a second wind.  Ended up powering home the last 5 or so, even with the hopscotch around the puddles.

Now onto the half!

That's one way to toughen the feet for blister prevention.

This time last year (next weekend actually), we followed Freesoul around the YouYangs for 50k barefoot (we had trail shoes on) and it was a frosty 2 degrees starting out on a granitey gravel trail and the surface just got tougher. I had on 3 layers, beany and gloves, and here we were following her in bare feet. Brrrr, and she won the womens 50k btw.

Ooh, I'm wincing just thinking about it!

Cutinova Hydro is a really useful dressing for blisters because it comes in quite a big piece, is absorbent of moisture if a blister is weeping, and can stay on for a few days while skin grows underneath. It's sterile, and shouldn't need changing very often (peel off carefully). Plus, because it's some sort of colloidal gel it provides a bit of cushioning. The top side is waterproof and then you can just put some tape or second skin over it.

Jenny

P.S.Chilli, don't scare Backpacker like that! And don't suggest to Ramone that he should wear shorts which will shrink when wet :) And can you or anyone else tell me how to quote multiple people's different posts in the one reply?

As Bunce said, then you can edit out all the extra guff info  in each quote.

Or you can manually do it like this:

jto said:

Quote

multiple people's different posts

Quote

in the one reply?

By typing in the quote tags such as
[quote] text you want to quote [/quote] or [quote=jto] <- name will appear in quote, and more text etc [/quote]

Ed: For all bb code you have a starting and ending tag, when you see broken quotes on CR it is mainly due to accidentally deleting the end tag with the "/" in the brackets. The code box above just lets me show you the formatting without it displaying what I have typed.

I thought so too. :D Actually I can just imagine 200 Yurrebilla runners scouring the Adelaide hills in them as compulsory kit. :)

Holy Crap Backpacker,
How on earth did you keep running with the back of your heel missing?
In the week before the H2H, I was involved in a Motorbike accident and I slid down Kensington Rd (having parted ways with my my bike) at 50km/h and sustained less injuries than that.
I hope it is on the mend and look forward to seeing you back on the trails soon.

Well the longest race that I have ever entered is now over, I am dry and warm again and I am very happy.

Like everyone else I got very wet and very cold and the combination did not help me run at maximum pace for 2 km from about the 26 km mark.  My time will be about 3:25 for the 30 km, 20 minutes faster than a training run over the same distance a fortnight ago.  It was also faster than my goal time leading me to believe that it will be possible for me to run a 5 hour marathon in Melbourne.

Having lived up to my name and had some fun at the back of the pack (I suspect that I was the last male home) I am very grateful for the marshalls and drink table staff who waited until I arrived and sent me on my way with a cheerful word of encouragement.  At least I was running and therefore doing something to stay warm.  Also thanks to Mrs Its fun for patiently standing in the rain at Athelstone to take my jacket from me at the start and then having a bundle of warm and dry clothing waiting for me at the finish line.  Your reward will be a 5 hour shopping expedition in Melbourne in October. :)

Jeepers, I almost gagged on my toast Backpacker, thanks for the warning. :)

Wow, that's a beauty.
For some reason I was thinking it was on the sole of the foot, but that's a tough spot where you decided to put it. :D

Agree it is odd that you have a blister of that size from gear that you normally run in, all I can think of is that the rain has run off the back of your leg onto the sock and caused a bit more friction than normal.  Nothing abnormal looking with the lining in the shoe ? Maybe it was just dodgy warn out socks ?

Keep an eye on it, hope all comes good expeditiously.

Backblister, rowers (a group into self inflicted pain and hardcore activity) use metho on their blisters - topical application.  :)

Poor backpacker!

At least it looks clean, but that's probably as bad as a 3rd-degree burn :) How/why did you take all the skin off? I would have just left it there to try to protect the rawness while new skin grows back (not-exactly-helpful advice to give now). If you can put a dressing on that stays for 4-5 days, and don't worry if it looks a bit mucky because moist wound healing is a good thing, and don't run during that time, think how refreshed you will be after a week off. I lost 2 weeks last year before Greenbelt when I staked my leg (orienteering in Tasmania) and my time was probably better for it.

Something weird I find (boys, ignore this bit) is that the process of being "hormonal" at certain times of the month means I'm more prone to chafing/blisters then than I am at other times...it's annoying!

I thought so too. :D Actually I can just imagine 200 Yurrebilla runners scouring the Adelaide hills in them as compulsory kit. :)

I'd better get mum knitting faster.

"Dashing through the Hills
In a pair of knitted pants
Giving lots of thrills
to the ladies as you prance

Yurrebil, yurrebil, yurrebilla all the way..."

So, can you pick the tune?

Well done Jenny, that just reinforces my earlier thinking that you may have been the rocker. :) And it wasn't just mandatory male kit btw.

As you suggested, can recommend the "cutifilm" or "opsite" dressings, a bit fiddly to put on, basically peel one layer off, cover clean wound, then peel the other backing layer off and you are left with a sort of flexible skin like coating. They are waterproof when on, but don't try putting them on in the middle of an event when your feet are wet ! - they don't stick as I have found out. (You can get them in various size sheets from pharmacies).

Thanks guys for the input. The people in the first aid tent decided to cut the flap of skin off. I just trusted that they knew what they were doing. Really Jenny? A week off in the third week before a marathon? I thought this was a key week. Not running right now will make me very very nervous. I will trust you though. Just blatently looking for reassurance. Bare in mind that I have had numerous bigs blocks of time off in the lead up already.
As for why it happened? Still a mystery. That heel has a bony lump on it, combined with wearing orthotics, breaking in new shoes is always a painful experience until the shoe in question gets a hole worn on that part of the heel. Though the shoes I wore that day had that hole already worn in the heel so they should have been fine.
Sorry to be still talking about my stupid foot. I must be boring everybody with it.

You've just run a key 30k long run  Backpacker, best to rest up for a week and let the foot recover. You don't want it coming back to haunt you on the day.

And don't then over do it next week when it hopefully it is recovered. Just keep the legs turning over, no need for big k's.

Howdy  BP, before Adelaide marathon last year I missed my last long run at 3 weeks out due to sore achilles. I was thinking on race day it would cost me a bit of time...it was doing my head in a bit....but  I ran a minute slower than my goal of 3.35, and most of that was other factors on the day. I know how it messes with your head but physically, if you have some long runs in the bank, it won't affect you much...in my case it possibly helped as I was tired and sore and the rest helped more than the long run would have.

I'll see you there

cheers Dave

Couldn't find this race listed anywhere here..... I was just curious if any other CRs ran this event yesterday and what their thoughts were in general of the event ??
Also does any one who stayed for the announcements know what time the 15km and 30km events were won in (for both m and f) ?? :)

Helen, you were first in the 15km in 1:07:36. (9th overall...Danny Habets was the fastest male in the 15km in 56:36)

Results should be on the web tonight.

Backpacker, did you step on a black cat while walking under a ladder? I have never seen such a scary blister let alone had one myself. The marathon is not gone yet. Get that foot right and then reasses. You know what is required to get to the finish line. Hope to see you there.

BP, I am in awe of you surviving 30km with your foot developing into that. I really hope it gets better, because I really want you to do the marathon. Not boring news at all ... keep us up to date with progress.

Don't panic Backpacker,
Enforced tapers are not always a bad thing. Last year I developed a swolen fat pad on the bottom of my left foot. I did not run for the entire 3 weeks before the Marathon and on the day, I managed a PB. I felt a bit underdone but obviously the break did me no great harm.
Think positive, don't let it get you down and you will be back and running in no time.
