I thought I would create an aggro-free zone for passionate discussion about the race and not the ownership.

I am now looking forward to this, with (i) little or no chance of doing the hill-trainig required of SFT, and (ii) wanting a Boston qualifier for 2012.

http://www.canberramarathon.com.au/

So once entries are open I shall throw my lot into this.

Also, no need to stay awake on 1 Dec this year!!!  Woohoo!

Who else is in?

I'm still waiting for a nasty, lingering case of Plantar Fasciitis to clear up - if it does in time for me to do the necessary preparation I'll be there.

Does anyone know when entries open? It states on the site that there is a reduced fee for entries received by the 30th of November. Is this info from last year?

Mark me down for the Marathon as part of my campaign to run Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney and Gold Coast Marathons in 2011. The five hour cut off is the only thing which would cause me concern (as that will be quite a PB), still - aim for the stars!

Cheers!

p.s. I too would like to know how to enter - the website states a reduced rate for those entering prior to the 30th of November and then says that postal entries are accepted from the 1st of December (Doh!).

The bit about early entry fees up to 30 November appears a few lines below the date this year's CM was supposed to be run - Sunday 11 April 2010 - so this is old information and I would disregard it.

I may even join you on your noble quest axltk421. The five hours won't be a problem but remaining injury-free will be quite a challenge. Come to think of it, getting permission from my wife to do that much running may also be a bit of a problem! :D

As you say, aim for the stars!

Canberra doesn't have a 5 hr cutoff. What they have is they get you to run part of the course on bike paths near the end so they can open some roads.
I'm not sure how it is done. Someone that has run past the 5hr mark at Canberra could explain where you run off to.

Good luck with goals for the year. I'll be missing Canberra, as I couldn't knock back getting to Boston.

If its on I will be running the Marathon, as already booked into Canberra the week before for Dragon Boat Nationals - I will extend my stay.

Went down last year as my daughter ran the Kid's Marathon - hope it is on as well.

The ACT is awash with bike paths. Looking at the course map, bike paths follow the course for much of the way. I am sure you just transition to these and then complete from there. I suppose the point at which this occurs depends on where you are in the course, ie not everyone will be at the same poitn after 5 and a half hours.

I have been one of those diverted onto the paths.
There are several places where the paths are linked to the course, and the race director sets up a diversion at these points. Alternate drink stations and a turn-around point are set up and race numbers are recorded near the turn point, as it becomes an out-and-back course.
The course is quite good cycleway for much of the distance and most of the rest is the footpaths adjoining the original course. It is mostly fairly flat, though there are a couple of short sharp hills if I remember it correctly.
The only cut-off that I can recall is that runners MAY be withdrawn from the ultra-distance race at the marathon finish if it appears that they will not complete it in a reasonable time, though I have never heard of this happening.

I received an email from CSM today - any dates on the CanberraMarathon.com.au web site (other than those for the actual event) should be disregarded as they haven't yet finalised the timing of entries. Basically just keep watching the web site.

Cheers, Chris

Hopefully they will be able to finalise something very soon as I would like to know whether to train fro this event or not. Only 22 weeks away if they go with the current date on the site.

Perhaps the Road Closures have not been approved, which was the main stumbling block this year.

Sam will also be there next year if it is on and looking forward to running with Chris, Slowmo and Deadcat et al in an official marathon after last year's great Lindy run. I am hopeful that all the Lindy runners and Lindy herself will be there to join us for a good weekend.

Well said Supersam.  Lindy's marathon will always stick in my memory as one of the best events I've ever been involved in - most especially for the great bunch of people who I met there.

But you know it was this year, not last year. I don't think you're old enough yet for the time to be flying past that quickly (unlike some of us) :Shame On You:

Spot on slowmo; Lindy's marathon was a wonderful way to spend a day with new-found friends and I'm looking forward to meeting everyone again next year - bring it on!

By the way, I followed the link from your page to the Mexican ultra - inspiring stuff, and I now see where you got the design for your running "shoes"!

Thanks for the correction guys. I guess I must be getting a bit forgetful in my old age. Regardless, I am looking forward to the event. I was talking to a mate at a course this morning and he is also keen for the event. He wants to get a Boston qualifier and I am sure that he can on the flat track that is Canberra.

Chris number two - that is an awesome photo of you and your little one in your profile. I hope to see you and your partner and the bub again next year. I wish you the best - you are both good people and the little one is lucky to have you as parents.  :Shame On You:

Runners who take advantage of the online entry option will receive a discounted entry fee of $90 for all entries received up until 30 November. The entry fee from 1 Dec is $100.

Can't find the online entry option though.....

Well, the site's certainly been updated now! Does the new site mean CSM is no longer running the show? And just what is the Australian Running Festival?

I really should learn to look at my emails before posting! The following is from a message I received from CSM at 7:21 this evening:

We are pleased to announce that Fairfax Events, organiser of the Sun Herald City to Surf - one of the world's premier road races - and Cundy Sports Marketing have established a partnership to deliver future Canberra Marathons.

The Canberra Marathon website will be updated soon with race details. Entries will open in December. The 2011 event will take place over the weekend of 9-10 April.

We look forward to the return of hundreds of runners from past events and also to introducing thousands of new faces to Australia's oldest city marathon. Together we will ensure that Canberra continues its reputation as the best organised marathon in Australia.

Regards

Dave & Fran
Cundy Sports Marketing

Cheers, Chris

I am not a big fan of Fairfax after this year's City to Surf. They are corporate money grabbers.. will have to access carefully now if I still want to be associated with this event going forward or not.

Same goes for SMH HM which they crowd out like the Running of the Bulls.

Happily the Canberra roads will take a lot of marketing to fill up to the same extent as Argyle St.

I'll be giving it a go in 2011.

Yup that half just keeps getting bigger and bigger and they charge more and more - moreover there seemed to be a lack of banter in the mid pack this year as opposed to previous years. I was only running a gentle 96, but no jibes or comebacks and alot of ipod central going on. Same goes for City to Surf. Wait for a hike in prices over the next few years. Those that don't believe me, just look to the big ocean swims in Sydney - same event as before over the same strtech of ocean, but recently more than double the price in a couple of years. Makes you think where this extra dough is going.

On the flip side, perhaps this is a move to enable the Canberra businesses to recoup losses from last year's no show on the official date. More people equal more money for them which is good for any local community especially in today's economy.

Keep believing - keep achieving all. Stride for stride on a life changing ride!

I had already decided not to run another Fairfax event. To run or not to run Canberra..

Does Canberra have a Fairfax newspaper?

The Canberra Times look to be the naming rights sponsors.

Damn Fairfax and their money grabbing ways. They should stick to making newspapers and not running events.

I really like the Canberra Marathon, but not sure if I will run it now.

Expect an entry fee around $130-150 I reckon.

I expect to see a cheap subscription offer with the race. So maybe the age, smh, canberra times or even fin review depending on what box you tick.

Maybe fairfax will provide the fund raising page like at C2S and SMH Half, plus the volunteers to work the drink stations?

Yes as Brick notes 2010 prices.

Maybe CSM and Fairfax will hold their prices to assist people get over the 2010 fiasco?

Or maybe (and this is the sort of clever marketing ploy you'll see when I am running the world) they will drop their prices to say $80 for both the mara and 50k and proudly proclaim "Canberra 2011 home of the best value city marathon in Australia!"

More people pitch up and they make even more money!

Then Fairfax release 189 Brahman bulls as "tailend bovine" and anyone running over 4.20 gets trampled or gored to death thereby rasing the profile of the event for years to come.

Here's a pici to capture the idea - just visualise the Ascis, shorts and running number.

Or he may be saying “got a cold - missed three weeks of training and here I am with a horn sticking into my chest. Ironic really as most people say running’s good for you. And so farewell sweet world – it was a blast – right up until I dropped off the 4.15 bus. Bugger.”

They will need to provide the volunteers, as my bet would be no local runners will be on drink station duty.

Thanks for all of the feedback regarding cut-off times. I'm looking forward to December to book this one in.
Cheers!
