I am planning to run 60k from Manly to Palm Beach (return) on Sat 18 Aug.

It is a run I have wanted to do for some time and it bridges the gap from a marathon to some longer Ultras. The plan is to start at 7am from South end of Manly Beach with the turnaround at Summer Bay Surf Club (aka Nth Palm Beach Surf Club). There is no need for any support as there is plenty of food/water opportunities.

If you wanted to do a shorter run, that's fine, turn around whenever you want or even run to Palm Beach and catch the bus back (or vice-versa).

Draft course is here

Anyone want to join me?

Edit: Updated course

Hammy - we once did a palm beach to bondi via manly - here we ran ON THE BEACH as much as possible as otherwise you are just wimping out. the 18th is just a week after you know what.

I realise that it isn't the perfect week as 12 foot is the week before and trailwalker is the week after, however there really isn't any good week.

This is an alternative event for me that isn't so daunting i.e. not so far and not so hilly (there are a few hills though). And it is close to home.  :p Gives me a chance to have a shot a C2S the week before as well.

I ran part of it today. Mona Vale to Palm Beach return and it was glorious - some really nice views.  I have changed the route slightly to ensure that just about all the top half is off the main roads and little traffic.

Sounds like a great run!  I'm in the same boat as inhisshadow - happy to do 30km, but won't be able to make the full 60.

I'd love to join on for the run from Manly to Palmy and then bus it back.

Just bumping this one back up...

Inhisshadow and I did a recon of the course today and I can confirm that the Garmin said it was exactly 30.0k. A really great run. Can't wait to do the return trip in August.

To get a feel for the run I have upladed some of today's photos on the blog.

I will post detailed directions soon.

Has anyone ever thought of getting a 42.2km run from this...... starting at Manly and finishing at Newport Arms? Has to be close to the distance. Would love to find some sponsors and have drink stations (especially the drink station at Newport Arms!) Not the right timing with Oxfam though.

seris - I think with fat ass, if you can think it, you can run it. you can be the winner in the 42km division!

Bandanna, I'm on call Sunday....... somehow I don't think I'd be within 30 minutes of the hospital when we hit Brooklyn! Also, we're doing the Hunter valley marathon the week after....
Hamburglar, after seeing the course, I may do the Manly to Palmy and bus it back. Has to be good training for Oxfam. Let me talk to the team. Great looking course, I like the way you keep off some of the busier roads.

So Hamburglar

What chance of moving the planned run to the Sunday? I'm keen to do it but Saturdays are always hard going for me, of course I don't want to disrupt this for the majority...and it is your run so I guess I'm just appealing to your good nature   ;) , and I'm sure you wouldn't use this as an opportunity to be vindictive about those "old legs" comments I've been making  ;) .

I'm sure you could reschedule bowls just this once?

After running 60k, these "old legs" as you say will need a day in bed to recover. Therefore Saturday it shall stay.

Anyway, fat ass tradition says Saturday doesn't it JoggerKev.

It is also the weekend before the Mt Wilson to Bilpin  bush run and that is a rather more attractive proposition. If only because I have been plodding up and down fire trails in preparation for it. So afraid I must skip this one. maybe one day I will be able to go for a long beach run

don't drag me into it - although tradition shows most FA are on sat, there are quite a few on Sun also.

All fair points especially the recovery from 60ks,

I stand corrected, and humbly ask you accept my apology. Looks like it's a Saturday for me then! Not sure how the boys at the Diggers Club bowls will take my absence

The timing looks good for me.
I won't want to thrash myself a week before Willy to Billy, but should be up for long and slow, or part of it at a steady pace.

I'm a possible starter but will probably only run 30 kms. Maybe one way, possibly out and back for the first half. Looks like a really enjoyable run and if the weather's anything like recently it will be fantastic.

Directions are attached.

There are a few tricky bits for the non-locals however it is pretty simple - keep the ocean on your right on the way up and on your left on the way back.

Starting to get nervous!

Is anybody planning a car back to Manly from Palm Beach? I'd like to do the run but am unsure of doing the 60k. well, I guess there is the bus as well? Hamburglar, what bus number would it be and where can I find the schedule? It would be good to carry it with me the whole way.

Who's running, for a final count?

Parking will be an issue. Unless you want to pay $20 for the council all day, I think North Head will be the closest all day spot, about 1.3k.

I had an idea to park at Queenscliff, in Bridge St, and jog 1.7k to the start. We will run along Bridge St just after the steps. We can take a jumper to the start, if it's cold, and drop it off on the run. Then on the way back, pick up a finish bag, with change of clothes, money etc.

I will be out all night, so see you a bit before 7am

Sportsman (and others),

My apologies, I didn't think about parking. I have a resident pass so can park in Manly. If you (or others) park in bridge st, I will pick you up at 6:45am. I will call you to confirm.

It may be only you and I at this stage (just the locals). Inhisshadow said he may see us out there somewhere. Spud and noindifference may be there.

BTW noindifference, the bus is 190 and they leave Palm Beach every 20 mins. You will need to change buses at Dee Why to get to Manly. It should take about 90 mins with the transfer.

My number is 0421012270.

Cheers!

An intimate group of three asembled this morning including Sportsman, TallGeoff and myself. We headed out together until Sportsman dropped off as he was looking for some slower training. TallGeoff provided some good company before he stopped at Palm Beach. We made half way in 2:59.

I was feeling good until about 45k where I really started to struggle. As much as I tried I couldn't run faster than 6:00 min k's. The last 5k was even worse - lots of niggles and I felt like the tin man for the last hour. Needed a few walk breaks, but finally made it home in 6:27.

A long way from my goal of 5:30, however that was never going to happen. Kudos to all you Ultra runners, running long is tough!

I have now had my fair share of beers and I am going to bed!

I will look for a more appropriate date to do this all again next year.

I used the run to test out my run/walk pacing plan for a 24 hour race in 6 weeks, and for long training that would not compromise the Willy to Billy next week.
I was fairly comfortable on the way up. I lost time lost in the slower sections (steep hills and steps), but easily picked up on the down hills and flats. On the return, I had to work a lot harder to do this.
I was hoping to feel fairly fresh at the finish but was quite tired and sore, though not worn out. It was significantly harder than a track race, that's for sure.
I finished in 6:59, with a few stops on the way back to say hello to some friends I saw.  I would have been close to 3:20/3:25 splits otherwise.

The run up was in pefect weather. Cool to mild, sunny and still. The views were spectacular. It warmed up after 3 hours, until the last 10k or so when cloud and a southerly wind came in to cool things off.

I tested a reduced eating/drinking schedule. I only needed to eat 1 1/2  40g nut bars and 5 gummi bears. I felt well hydrated when I started, (too many pitsstops) so did not need a drink until 43k, then another at 55k. I kept my HR low - ave 114. It ranged from about 105 early up to 125 near the end- on the flat sections.

Thanks to Hamburglar for organising a fatass that fitted into my schedule.
I can sleep in tomorrow as well.

Nice run.

I thought of you a lot today but as I still hadn't recovered 100% from the 12FT so I decided to not come. I thought at some point I would just start with you and keep you company for a little while, but I could have felt motivated to stay for a long time  and this would not have helped for my recovery. So I finally decided to just go for a hike/run at North Head. I confirm that the weather was really nice. When I went back home (2PM) I looked around to see if I could see some of you finishing but the beach side was full of people so there was no chance.

Next year, maybe, although I must say my priority goes to the trails not the streets.
