Any idea about course changes?

None. Went to the website but it says not till May 4th. seems strange they would open entries so far out without letting you know the course.

Maybe, but does it make that much of a difference? The course is as the course is (hopefully constructive comments from last year have been effected).

I'll expect I'll enter, even if the course isn't real flash.

I too will enter and am not really that fussed with any changes that will be made. I only ran the half last year but am stepping up to the full this year. Any changes wont make a difference to me.

I just thought it would be natural progression. Here is the course, would you like to enter.

As long as it goes over the bridge, finishes at the Opera House and is a certified 42.2Km, I'm not too concerned over the rest of the Blackmores course.

I'll be entering, it will be my first marathon. As brewer said, the course isn't really important but I do wish that more events started and finished at the same spot. Makes getting there and away again a bit easier when you arrive by car from further afield.

I will be entering, but need to decide which event! I have never done a Full before, but feel I may have my arm twisted to do so...

Saying that, I also don't want to rush things and get too excited. Maybe it is better to focus on my Half time first, and get better at that, before moving to the Full...?

I've entered & am also stepping up to the marathon.
At this stage I'm not concerned about course changes!

I'm entered for the half. If my training keeps going well and I have no injuries I will be secretly aiming for sub 2:00. :(

Am looking forward to a marathon revisit and hopeful of a pb.

It would be disappointing if the "Star" design radiating from Anzac Parade changed...I found that fun last year.  Hopefully it only involves the Citylink.

I have entered for the full - and word on the street is that the City West Link section will be canned, looking to find more k's around the Randwick centennial park section....here's hoping my usually reliable source stays true to form  :(

Last yr someone suggested we keep heading down to La Perouse.  That would be nice!

New for 2010!

To mark this very special anniversary year there will be some exciting changes in store including a brand new marathon and half marathon course that will knock your Asics socks off! It will be much faster, much more scenic and spectator friendly.

Received the email announcement today. The suspense waiting for the course to be announced might kill me! Further south would be good. I hope we don't end up with a two lap course. I don't know what else "Spectator Friendly" might mean though.

Two laps is fine sometimes, but I'd rather travel further afield for a 'big city mara'.

Not that I'm planning to enter the marathon again. Yet. Not today anyway.

And there I was with some unfinished business on the City West Link - I cramped up last year on it due to the onset of bone stress. Hopefully I will need to find another way of getting payback.

I swore I'd never do Sydney again due to the City West Link. I had an absolute ball over the first 29k but the heat and the hills killed me after that. If they ditched that part and kept it like the first 29k, I'd have a rethink. Will be interesting to see what the new course is. Or I could drop back to the half and do MM. That might be pushing it. :(

In my one attempt at the Sydney marathon I exited City West Link in an ambulance. The dehydration was unpleasant but it was the boredom that finished me off.

If the rumour about that section being replaced proves correct I'll enter :(

I know how you feel - in 2009 this was the slowest and most unpleasant of my three marathons to date I told myself I wouldn't run it this year - then I thought maybe that's exactly why I should run it this year!. Damn this perpertual urge to tackle challenges!

Gee I wouldn't take the chance on missing out, although I have no idea on how long (if ever) the available spots take to fill up.  I know that the London Marathon is getting very hard to enter as a non-charity runner these days. I even contacted a prostate cancer charity in January this year to see if they would take me and they had no available positions. What is holding you back if you don't mind me asking?

There's a chance I may have to move interstate for work.  I realise I could come back for the race, but I'd just rather hold off for the moment.

That sounds like a perfectly good reason. You can now safely hold off knowing that you can enter at the last minute.

ANY MARATHON, especially major marathon that runs out of water, ought to be boycotted until they fixed up problem in that department.
I sure hope SRF organisers will fix that problem - Regardless fast or slow runners, water should be available to EVERYONE, not just MOP/FOMOP/FOP..

If that is correct then they've got rid of the City West link, which is great news for those at the BOP it was too hot along there.

This will be a faster and less boring course without the City West Link.
May have to reconsider my intention to repeat Melbourne in preference this year.

No I think that it's corkscrew that feeds the Cahill Expressway into the northbound lanes of the Bridge.

You'll be running downhill so a great way to pickup some speed.

How fast are you planning to go?

You might have to slow for the corner and / or ask the organisers for barriers with cushioning to cater for the speed merchants. :(

BTW, the Race Director really does listen to constructive criticism & ideas. :(

Just checked the Marathon course.  Well done to the Race Director, the new course is ten times better than the old one.  More time around Moore Park, trotting past the SCG, and twice on Hickson Road, which is dead flat and great for tired legs.  It also adds a loop around the Botanic Gardens, which was not in the Marathon Course previously.

Sydney was my first, and only Marathon, and the City Westlink was awful.   This new course is far more scenic, and while Hickson Road could still be a bit hot, at least it does not have an upward gradient like the CWL.

Unfortunately I won't be able to run it - arrive back from Canada the morning of the marathon.   Next year!

Again - well done Race Director.   ;)  :(  :(

Was having memories of SM past when the corkscrew was an uphill at the end. Bit of an horror.

Agree, full credit to RD. Course looks quite an improvement (& prob a lot less traffic management hassles - or at least confined) . I was not planning on Syd mara this year, but now have renewed interest.  Quite different to my first in 96 to Homebush (can't remember where we started).

Yeah - the new course looks like a great improvement.

Judging by the map, it looks like when runners go through Hyde Park they will need to run down some steps, cross Park Street then run up some steps on the other side.  Not too many marathons require runners to negotiate steps.  If I am reading the map corrently, is there any way of avoiding the steps?
