Interesting.

What is it with City2... That you need to run past the finish line and do a U turn back down to it? Hmmmm

And their Red group says for those who intend to finish the course within 55 minutes. Green is for "runners and joggers only".

But is food for thought. At least one would get a PB.

I am seriously considering travelling back to Melbourne for this one.  Thoroughly enjoyed Run Melbourne and am returning for the Melbourne Marathon in October (although only doing 10km).  For those living in Melbourne, although I know it is the first time for this run, those familiar with the terrain, what is this 14km like.  Is it anything as hilly as Sydney's City to Surf?

Definitely not! Apart from about 200m of downhill on Fitzroy St you'd struggle to find an incline on that entire course.

Have just entered this run, but I do not believe the website is correct.  It states on the main page the time for seeded runners and 55 minutes (men), 60 (women) for preferred.  Then when entering it states for the red group must be able to complete course in 55 minutes.  Which is it 55 minutes for both seeded and the red group?  In the City to Surf it use to be 75 minutes for the red group, although this has changed to 70 minutes for 2012.  I am hoping and assuming this is an error, otherwise the preferred runners and the red group are the same.

Seems very similar to the Great Australian Run. I wonder if this will be televised live just the the City To Surf is?

Not sure if I will enter, will decide much closer to the day.

thanks for this information chrisso

As expected they have radically revised their course from last year when they ran their first event under the same name. That run stared in docklands and was largely off-road on walking/bike tracks to Port Melbourne and then St Kilda. We all agreed then that it was a nice course, but far to narrow to accommodate a sigificant number of runners.

This course looks very much like the first part of the MM full and half. It could lead to a few cross drivers attempting to get access to beach areas at that time of year - it will be interesting to see what kinds of cut-offs they will apply.

I cannot understand why they have scheduled this for the same day as the Hannover Connect 'Ride for Home' on Eastlink. I'm already signed up for 75km on the bike.

The Age/ Sunday Age is sponsoring both events. Don't they talk to each other? There will be a number of recreational fitness nuts that are torn between the two. It will split the participant pool, the media attention (for 2 worthy charity causes) and the sponsorship $$$.

Not smart IMHO.

I think there might be some confusion between events here. The race that I think you mean from last year (actually January this year) was the 10km City 2 Bay? If so, that was run by different people - it was put on by the 'Great Run' mob who had previously organised the 15km Great Australian Run in November for a couple of years. So the 15km Great Australian Run was replaced by the 10km City 2 Bay (albeit 2 months later in the season), and now there is another 14km event being run by the City 2 Surf mob, called the City 2 Sea, which is in the original Great Australian Run slot! I'm not sure if a 2012 City 2 Bay was being planned as well - there is nothing on their website about it yet that I can find.

I've just signed up for the City2Sea, it will be my first run of any great distance (being a new one to this running game!)

I started running at the start of this year, then did the 5k Run for the Kids and 8k Mother's Day Classic.

What should l do to train for 14k?

currently l am running every 2nd day, trying to build up my distance and times.

I would just keep doing what you have been doing but be patient and don't do what most of us have done and go overboard and then end up injured.

Just slowly increae the volume of your training and talk to as many other runners are you can as this is a good way to learn things. Maybe even try and find a running group to train with.

Unlike the City to Surf, it should be a warm time of the year to run a 14km.

9am start time too - could make for a warm second half depending on weather

Yeah, the Olympic Dream (which used to be run at about the same time of year) was a 9am start I think, and that was sometimes run in well above 20 degree temperatures.

Movember is a great cause, so good on them and great timing with the race being held right in the middle of the month.

Unfortunately the course is very uninspiring and with other events on during that time (Eastlink Ride, Shep Half-Ironman) it may get lost.  Is it too late for them to change the course!?  Maybe something for 2012 when they realise entries weren't as successful as what they hoped for...

I emailed the organisers about this red group having to finish within 55 minutes (as per my comments above), I think you will see the red group is now 75 minutes or under.

I'm in for this. Looking to make this an annual event!

For those that are interested, I've mapped the elavation.. Basically a flat course, but then again, we are in Melbourne!

Those sneaky flat courses can be a real pain - not meaning to burst anyones bubble.  Although it is better than the City to Surf where not only the uphills get you, but the down hills kill the back of your legs, I always find that running slight inclines are far more draining on energy, because mentally you think you are running flats, but cannot work out why you are struggling, and that is because what appears flat is not necessarily flat.  A good example is Run4Fun at Olympic Park - I hate runs at Olympic Park because they always knock me out - well, not hate exactly, because I have never done a fun run that I have hated.  However, I look forward to coming down to beautiful Melbourne in November (and October) to run in perfect weather conditions.

I'm thinking of doing this too, if I can stay fit and injury free!  Should be a pretty scenic course.

The only thing that puts me off is having to travel back to the start afterwards.

It's pretty impossible in Melbourne to not have a clash of events as there are so many things on offer through the summer.  It's also the weekend of Shepparton Half Ironman, so that rules out a lot of runners who are triathletes.  There are plenty of runners in Melbourne who don't ride who will enjoy doing this event.

Not looking forward to the running past the finish line then looping back - sounds cruel!

The weather will just be a gamble!

Do you think it's possible to get massive crowds like City2Surf in the first year?

Hey Greg,

I'm a regular Mo Bro so I'm really looking forward to this one!  My buddies and I signed up last week, hopefully it becomes a regular fixture.

The Fairfax events organisers have written to CR asking that we mention their need for volunteers for the race.

Yep this is what Im training for, I have an 8.7km run due on Friday on my way to 14km :)

Really looking forward to it, It should be really nice running down the tree lined St Kilda Rd, then around the formula 1 track, before cruising along the water front.

I guess it loops back so you get a great view of the Melb skyline going one way and then you can focus more on on the beach as you approach the finish line. Also I like watching other runners go past and you can give each other encouragement.

Run 4 The Kids was a good run but running on the freeways was a bit boring despite the nice weather and views of the city, it was much better running through docklands and the city the final 5km...and Run Melbourne halfa was good but was pretty much 2 laps of the same loop...i reckon this will be perfect and hopefully great weather too..

Now...back to training...

Will definitely enter if I'm feeling well from Melbourne Marathon.

If not, I'll probably volunteer to be on a drinks station.

Will be a good excuse for work to grow a nice dirty mustache!

I have entered. Gives me something to aim for, will use it really as just my "long run" will not be racing it by any stretch of the imagination. If I increase my "long run" by 1km every week, I'll be at 14kms by the run date.

Then I have a week in Thalinad to recover (Y)

Fresh out of the Melb Half Marathon I thought this would be a good final event for the year but what really gets my goat is the entry fees $55/$65...

Welcome to running I guess. I understand there is a charity component and I understand they have logistical costs and these things dont come together on their own... but 17,000 entries is around $1,000,000... be interesting to know where all the pie goes

I made an exception for the Melb Marathon as it is an established event, based in and around the centre of town and high in demand but as a new event I find this a bit rich, shame...

I'm like you. Only really started taking running seriously this year. I managed to do the 10k MM in under 55min which i'm really happy about.

What i do is try to focus on distance at a constant pace.

For speed training I do hills and intervals. For hills, just find a hill that takes about 1min to climb (or is really steep) then try and SPRINT it and do about 10sets. For intervals, I just sprint one lap of the footy oval, then walk half, sprint one, walk half etc

If you can't be bothered getting out of the house, I do burpees while watching TV (full burpee with pushup). Try and do 100 and time it then try and improve on that time with every burpee workout. It gives you the best cardio, conditioning workout I know of.

Ad in the Age this morning said early entries were being extended.

Curious to know whether entries aren't tracking as strongly as expected.  Though nothing was going to track like City to Surf Sydney.

I've entered and received my race pack yesterday. Having just completed my first marathon (MM) I am looking fwd to the shorter distance. This race is also on the same day as the Eureka building climb, which is a bit disappointing. I hope the numbers are good but I don't expect it to match the City2Surf numbers. Hopefully the numbers will improve over time. And I guess I'll show off my yearly mo at this event too.

There's no charity component to the entry fee as far as I am aware. They encourage entrants to fundraise for charity, but I don't think any of the entry fee is donated directly (happy to be corrected if this is not the case). Run 4 The Kids on the other hand donates a significant portion of the entry fee directly to the Royal Children's Hospital Appeal, which is why I am always very happy to enter. City 2 Sea just looks like another big profit-making machine to me. Nothing wrong with that as such, but I can't see this becoming an iconic event like C2S, as the course is not nearly so challenging, and a flat 14km run is just a bit of an odd one. I don't understand why they didn't make it a 15km event - at least that's a distance worth setting a PB over.

I think we are all reeled in by some events when they state 'The official charity is...........' and we are led to believe (particularly first time runners) that some of the entry fee goes to that charity when it is not the case in most.

I think all races, when linked to a Charity, should follow Run 4 the Kids lead on this and actually state what the entry fee is and how much is donated to the associated charity (if any), therefore we have the choice whether we wish to run or not.

I think also that sponsors sometimes donate money to charities per volunteer they supply for the event so paying your money to just run may be an indirect donation - again this should be clear on the entry.

Everyone feels good when they they are doing their bit.

By the way, before I am accused of being a tight arse, I paid my $50 for the MM 5K and made a donation on top of that for CPEC  :)

... a flat 14km run is just a bit of an odd one. I don't understand why they didn't make it a 15km event - at least that's a distance worth setting a PB over.
I assume because it is the same distance as the City2Surf.  I'd generally agree about preferring standard (or at least rounded) race distances.  However in this case, if they establish it at that distance and keep it constant (unlike Run for the Kids) then I'll be OK with it.

Yeah, that's my assumption too. But C2S just happens to be 14km because that's the point to point distance from Hyde Park to Bondi Beach up through Dover Heights, whereas this one has already got a big out and back section to add distance once you get to the 'Sea' - I figure once you've done that you might as well go out for 500m longer and have a 15km (or cut that section out and potentially have a 10km). It's not like times will be comparable with C2S anyway. But that's just me - plenty of other people will probably love it.

Hopefully I'll be one of them!

For me, it's really just that the distance and timing are both right for where I am at the moment... Oh, and the fact that it finishes right near home is a big plus!

Haven't done a point to point (city based) run before... Glad to see they have 'baggage trucks'(I always take a bag full of crap I probably don't need, with me to all races)!

Does the baggage truck mean they transport your bag from start to finish line? Do you get a ticket or something similar so you know which one is yours?

I have never been to St Kilda, so am wondering about easy availability of coffee shops and restaurants near the finish  line. should we pre-book a restaurant? A poster mentioned 17000 race starters. Is that realistic?

Gaz,
There are plenty of great cafe's just a short walk from the finish on Fitzroy St, most serve breakfast till late in the afternoon.  A couple to try are 1 Fitzroy St, Bar Santo or Street Cafe.

If it's a nice day, there is no better spot to sit a relax on a Sunday afternoon

Cheers
Brandon

Not for me, it's the same day as the Ride for Home http://www.rideforhome.com.au/ 75k bike ride on Eastlink, interestingly both of which are sponsored by The Age...
Otherwise probably yep, looks like a fast course...oh, apart from the crowded corners, walkers in front of you, etc...but hey, that's fun runs... :Talking Ear Off:

It may be worth noting that Run Geelong (20 November) has an entry fee of $45 and every cent goes to the prime charity (Geelong Hospital). I agree that it would be good for all events to declare up front where the money is going.

Well I am looking forward to this event still. Not much training due to my ITBS, but hopefully an enjoyable run before the Xmas season commences. I won't be doing the Marysville HM this year as I have renovating to do (correction... finish) before family visits at Xmas. I haven't heard much about this run in the media but hopefully there is a good crowd to create a fun atmosphere. And more importantly, I hope the weather is great. Are there many CR people running in this event?
