Manly to Palm Beach 30k, 60k is on again this year. A very scenic run traversing 14 beaches and headlands.

Details can be found here and below...

Date: 21st May
Time: 7am
Distance: 30k one way or 60k return (or turnaround whenever you want)
Aid: Plenty of shops and taps along the way

Hopefully we have better weather than we did last year. A case of beer to anyone who breaks the course record of 4:59.

Hope to see some of you there.

Edit to change date.

Hamburglar, I am keen on this run but Striders have moved June's 10km race to this date to avoid a clash with ANSW State 10km Championship on first Saturday in June.

Is there any way you can move this run to 21 May?

Did the 30k option two weekends ago, absolute beauty.

Count me in for the 28th, however if it is brought forward to the 21st have a great run, as I will be interstate.

Thanks Horrie - I didn't realise. Seeing that I volunteer for the striders race, I had beeter change it to the 21st. Sorry Slug.

Was just looking at my calendar..... TNF May 14
Singapore Sundown Marathon May 28.... that gives me the weekend in between to do something in my own backyard... maybe not the 60km version.
Chris, why do you follow roads when there is some great track and beach to follow?
Would love to put an aid station out the back of my place :)

Jane,

Re: the course. It just happened that way. I remember considering a few options regarding the route including "the famous" Curly to Dee Why headland, Dee Why - Long reef beach + long reef headland, Turimetta headland and turning at the Palm Beach lighthouse. The current route turned out to be exactly 60k, which I thought was a good round number.

Running Dee Why beach like both you (I assume) and I regularly do, would put people off, particularly when the lagoon is flowing and people would need to get wet feet  :pardon: The altenative route along Pitwater road is not ideal, but not too bad. Plenty of other scenic sections to make up for it.

I decided against the Curly to Dee Why headland as I couldn't stand running past those snobs in their mansions  ;)

Maybe we could all make a detour and finish at 56k for a BBQ at yours :)

I have run to Palm beach a couple of times but using a slightly different route - Ocean St from Narrabeen, briefly re-join Pittwater/Barrenjoey Mona Vale to Newport, Then the headland track to Bilgola, then Marine Parade and Whale Beach Rd to Palm Beach. A bit longer but a v nice run.

Edited to say well actually the route that Burglar has chosen is almost exactly that but better in the parts that its different.

This sounds really good, but never having run 60 kms in one hit, might be a challenge on my re-bound back....or am i just becoming one big woos? Now, 56 kms with a BBQ at the end, thats different.....

You could have always done the Manly to Palm Beach then turned up late to volunteer at the 10k to be consistent !! Would like to do it although the Manly 12k is the day after - might need a double leave pass and you know how hard those are to get.

Having done the last two editions I am keen to give this another go - might get some decent weather this time around. It's a great course.

Had the 28th in my diary and this definitely would've been better for me. 21st is more difficult with family commitments, will see what I can do.

Hope I can get on board. SR

Will try to make it this year for the 30km version..... looking very likely. Hamburgler, what pace will you be looking to do this at (on average)? I'm keen to run with some company, but like you I'm training for the Gold Coast marathon for a sub 3/ sub 2.50 result, so would benifit from a 4.30 (ish) per km pace. Or is this run hilly enough not to worry about pace?

cheers Couldhavebeen.

Couldhavebeen...

Looks like you might be a bit quick for me. Last year I got to Palm Beach in 2:46, returning in 3:07. I expect to be around the same time this year. It is surprisingly hilly, especially at the northe end, so averaging 4:30's would be solid running. Maybe SirRunalot might be up for a quicker journey? Anyway, see ya there.

Couldhavebeen

I am using this run as good preparation for GC, but focussing on sustaining longer time on feet (would like to do 60, but haven't done 60 before, so we will see) As close to holding a consistent pace over duration as i can.

I am certainly not in the same time target category as 'burglar or you,  for GC (...this time!), but the course is hillier than you might anticipate. However, if you doing the 30 instead of 60 .....

See you there.

I am planning to do 40 km on Saturday am, so will likely park the car at Narabeen or thereabouts and catch the 515 / 516 bus route to manly. I think there is a bus that gets there for 6.45 am. So those running by will pass by the car at 20 km and 40 km respectively.

Whereas I may not be able to hang around too long afterwards, happy if anyone in roughly same pace range wants to drop off / pick up stuff from car en route.

I am travelling from Middle Cove to Narabeen for anyone en route.

As a fundraiser for my Trailwalker Team, I am having Hamburglars and beer at my place after the Manly to Palmy run from 12 midday. $20 donation with all proceeds going to Oxfam. Coolrunning Ambassador Blue Dog will be the celebrity chef. Anyone wanting to finish the run at Dee Why / North Curl Curl let me know and I can give you easy directions to veer off from Hamburglars map. Everyone welcome, just need your name added to this thread for catering purposes.

Hamburglars and beer cooked by Blue Dog after a long run. Does it get any better than that? Count me in Seris and thanks!

Unfortunately might not have a long enough leave pass Saturday to join you (for the Burgers and beer that is / I will be there for 40km of the run)...(and perhaps better that Blue Dog doesn't cook the beer as well .....)

Hi, I am just working up to longer running again after a layoff since last July. I will be joining you for 30km but will be taking an early wave start from mona vale headland at 5.30 and meeting you at manly and then turning round.
That gives me a nice early finish.

Looking forward to having a crack at the 30k on Saturday and getting the GC campaign underway. The weather also looks like it will come to the party - 22 max and mostly sunny, gorgeous.

I'm with Koala1 I'm afraid.

Just too much on this weekend to allow me to get there.

Have really loved running this course the last couple of years, so I'm pretty cut that I can't make it.

Hamburglars & beer sounded very tempting too!

Maybe things will be different next year.

I quite want to do this but still not sure I am fully recovered from TNF, I went out for a slow 10k last night and my hips ached a bit. I did get to see an owl right on a branch over the track on the trail down from North head though so I was pretty pleased about that! If only it was the 28th then I would be in! Might just do the 30km option and get the bus back...

Did a very taxing 3km taper run for this last night. Like Stephen I don't think my legs will be back to 100% in time post-North Face, but will still toe the line.

EDIT: Buzz, it appears the "true" 30k course record is 2:34 set by JDW and Owen in 2008. Sailaway did a 2:32 last year, but this was a Mona Vale return.

I have one other mate joining me. He will do the 30 also.

If I park at Narabeen, I just worked out that will take me to about 45 kms. Burglar can then do a quick dash off for lunch  ..... More than 45 is uncharted territory for me, so perhaps not sensible for me to push 'beyond the pale' just yet...

I have time to do the 60k as not in a rush to be anywhere so I might, depends how I am feeling at the 30 I guess. Mind you it will take a good hour on the bus back and waiting around for buses might add another hour on by the time I am home, so might not be too much longer running it! (if I can do each leg in 3 hours that is).

I might start at Dee Why, run with each of the packs for a while, then turn back.

Don't tell me that I am the only one doing the 60k? Horrie what about you? are you celebrating your birthday with 60k?

Sorry Sandbaggler, I am out. As much as I would have loved to celebrate my birthday by running 60km, I have a couple of commitments that I can't get of. So, unfortunately I have to pass.

With the weather forecast more pleasant than last year's a 60km run to build up a good appetite is a perfect way to kick off the weekend. I love this sport :drinks:

Hi,

Bit of a lurker......

Myself and my wife wanted to do this but we havent quite recovered from North Face. We live right near Ocean Street at Narrabeen and would be happy to set up with fruit/water/endura/whatever for everyone coming through. Probably set up somewhere near Loftus Street intersection on the western side of Ocean Street.

I know its pretty early in the piece so if not needed, no worries.

Cheers

Ben

I don't know how far I will run. but will be there for the Hamburglars and beers.
I might start at Dee Why, run with each of the packs for a while, then turn back.
Hey Ron,
I have emailed you my address. Anyone else considering a burger, let me know. It's going to be a beautiful day. Blue Dog is in control, almost. I won't run .... will be stocking up on food and ice for the beers and coke.

Ben,

Shame you can't run Ben. Aid probably won't be needed, but we wouldn't say no. ONly if you are keen
