What do you think would be fair compensation for "volunteering" as a marshal? Bearing in mind that we want to keep costs down to make events accessible to as many people as possible?
What about donations to organisations who provide provide marshals like lions etc?

Personally I think SARRC members should support their club. If every member volunteered for only one event per year there would be ample volunteers for all events. Unfortunately times are changing so perhaps some sort of compensation should be given. What about discount membership, say:
volunteer for one event in a year and get 10% off membership the next time it is up for renewel.
two events in a year 20%
three events 50%
four events 80%
Five events and you get a years free membership?
Do you think that would encourage more members to "volunteer"?

during the year the Brisbane Road Runners (pretty small club in reality, not like the Sydney Striders or anything), ask the members to do a couple of marshlling days. they publish a quarterly mag and out nsame and set dates are listed in it on an alphetical order. you are asked either to od your day or arrange a swap. works out well as someone is always either not caring to race or injured or whatever. you get a free race entry to use whenever. these ar ethe regualr events. for Bris mara, they gave some prizes, donations etc for groups that provided marshalls, like school groups etc.
maybe contact BRRC and/or In Training and see what their thoughts are?

Hi, finished the marathon in a couple minutes past 4hours, i think( no watch or finish clock) My slowest Adelaide Marathon in 14 starts. However, my dissapointment stems from the fact that i walked up some rises near the end . Not because I physically had to but because my will to push on failled me.
Having said that, you gotta be happy with any marathon finish. Enough of my whining.
Well done to all finishers and a special congrats to the first timers from the 8 oclock SARRC group.

Simlin, it was with aghastness that I read the RD's email pleading for volunteers. Unfortunately it arrived to late for me to change my plans for Sunday. It has, however, made me resolve to put into my running vs family balancing-act a marshaling duty for 2010 (if at all possible I will bring it forward to a 2090 race, and then put another one in for 2010).

Keep me to it!

Great to hear that other people's family members are out marshalling - the problem is that if they marshall too much they may be lost to 'marshalling' and won over to 'running'.  

I have done it before in the past and can recommend it as a very pleasant and rewarding way to spend a morning (that is if one can't run).

Quick notes from the race director, who is enjoying all the feedback...

T shirts
"Race Director made a decision to order generic T shirts in order to have them supplied prior to the race as the supplier could not guarantee this.  Race results will invite marathon runners who wanted a memento T shirt to return it to SARRC for overprinting.  SARRC will cover the cost of printing and postage.  Anyone wanting to do this can advise SARRC earlier on office@sarrc.asn.au and send the T shirt or singlet to SARRC 73 Wakefield St, Adelaide 5000 with it clearly labelled "Marathon Mement, race number (if known), name & address and cost of postage".

Race Clock
"Race Director reports that the race clock failed to operate due to a fault in the battery which is not holding a charge.  However, all finishers were recorded on video with time of day so that results will be accurate."

I wonder why they brought it forward 2 weeks for next year, surely that will increase the chances of nasty weather.
And if so, it might also increase the reluctance for volunteers to come out and stand in the cold and rain for hours on end as well.

Personally I appreciated not having an actual finish line. If there had been a line of tape across the finish line then I am not sure that I would have had the strength to lift my leg over it, I really was that knackered.

Don't worry K-Ram, I am sure you were just getting in some practice for Yurrebilla. 'Walk up the hills and run the rest' seems to be the accepted method for long trail runs doesn't it?

I would also like to add my thanks to all the Volunteers and Organisers for the huge effort they all put in to make the day such a success.

Now its just a matter of convincing my stiff and sore legs back into training again in time for the City-2-Bay and Yurrebilla. (maybe even Melbourne )

Reckon they should change supplier, the new one will have at least 11 months to supply them for next year. Not that I wanted a t-shirt on Sunday, but I empathise with those that did.

Wonder how it will cope with runners finishing on Sunday with numbers on their backs, noticed a few of them, also a couple of numberless runners in the final 100 meters, not sure if they got kicked off or not.


As I mentioned earlier, there really needs to be a backup plan with the race clock, sure the camera may have been it, but I'm sure with 970 entrants every race number would not be visible. I realise too that the number tear offs should be in sequence, but that doesn't always happen when your buggered at the end of a race, at least if you see a timing clock you have a pretty good idea of what your official finish time should be.

I know it's not going to help now, but couldn't an extension cord have been run across the track to the clock and had it run off it's charger without the need to run on batteries ? Maybe charge an extra $2 per entrant next year to cover the cost of a new timing clock for backup purposes. Hope it's fixed by yurrebilla.

907 entrants! It sounds like more people are running every year. No wander there aren't enough volunteers. They are running instead!

Yep, Ian Brade from Mildura won the full with a time of 2:35. Well done Brady!
He won the half in the two previous years.
Not sure of any other winners/times.

Well this was my debut marathon. I went into with no preconceptions about time or how i would feel during or after the race.
It was just great to run with other people, i train on my own so it was nice to hear people talking and have people to run with, especailly in the windier parts.

In terms of my run im pretty happy, i think i may have snuck in under 3hrs and came second.
I was a little annoyed at not being recongnised as the fastest female novice marathon runner, but oh well. Also thought it was alittle lapse not to have the placegetters names before calling up for the presentation, or finishing times.

My only gripe is why they allow people to wear the headphones when in a rce with large numbers, when you i got to 10km to go they had just started literally, and they were jogging 3 and 4 across the path and because they couldnt hear you they werent moving to the left, a number of times i nearly went over on my ankle in the grass.

I look forward to my next one, i have learnt a lot about how many gels i realy need, hitting the wall and how to deal with it, and also i will do a longer preparation than 10weeks.

I hope everyone has recovered well and are looking forawrd to their next race

There was a girl just in front of me so it might have been you, Megan. Were you wearing a pink or red top? If you passed a guy with a bright green t-shirt and a coolrunning cap with around 5 or 6 km to go, that was me and you finished just before me.

Arfa of the 'Secret Society' (?) - you're welcome to join our group at the back, although you will probably lead the group (?) - but I am starting with the first starters and hope that you and K-Ram (given that our friend Ramone is planning to start with the middle group) don't catch me until at least 1/2 way through Clealand (maybe Horsnells?)!!


ie I think I have worked out who you are ... but I'm not very sure ... so just ignore it all if it doesn't make sense. It's just the running the same pace as Kimone, and getting lost on the trail sound a little like someone who I sometimes run with (or try to run with, because although older, you're still faster, much. I think, if you are you).

Secret society? That sounds both interesting and cryptic! More details please.
Older huh? I certainly aged a bit after Sundays marathon thats for sure but I am not 'that' old.
Faster? No where near fast enough unfortunately.
If you are you? I am most definitely me, I can assure you, always have been.

I was the 4th person in our little group that ran the alternate version of the 3 peaks at Mt Crawford with you a little while ago.

Unfortunately Arfa, with the current timing system SARRC use there is probably a lot more work involved in publishing the results...entering all the late entry data, matching up the finishing times with the finishing order...you need to get it right or you get complaints.
However as we move closer and closer to electronic timing (which is coming) the results will be published a lot faster.

and actually every time I saw the camera I made every effort not to look like a mutant, overweight T-Rex chasing a rabbit, which is probably why there are at least a few nice looking photos of me for a change

You have motivated me to take a look at these photos Simlin - photos of all of my friends out running and having a good time - just what I want to see!  

The other suspect for 'you' is a fan of the goons - and yes a just little older than you and I, Arfa. I will refrain from pace comparisons(just incase I have improved!! and in case others continue to make surilous commnents, in bad poetry, about my pace.   )

Well done everyone.
I didn't run, but I did come out to cheer the victors home.
There were many that I didnt catch up with (e.g. Zac and Chilliburger), sorry i missed you.
I was especially chuffed for Dave for completing his second marathon in a decade.
It was insprational to see you guys, after leaving the stadium I went for an 8k run around the Glorious River Torrens.

Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to say a HUGE thank you to all at SARRC and the hordes of volunteers, marshalls etc who did such a great job on Sunday.
I was really impressed with the level of organisation and professionalism with which the event was run.

This was my first 10km race, and thoroughly enjoyed it (although went out too fast I realised about half way through!).
Am now looking forward to the City to Bay in a few weeks...and then may have a crack at the McLaren Vale Half in October.

i didn't run - decided to spectate this year after a soul crushing half marathon effort last year, and i must say, i am now itching to be part of it again - maybe even the full!
seeing everyones faces before they took off out of santos, then along the half way point - the different facial expressions - some hurting, some looking like they could go forever, it was just fantastic. just makes me want to be part of it.
i was the goon with the signs cheering anyone and everyone on - go mount gambier!
it so good to have such a big event like this is SA - well done to all the organisers

Yes I remember the sign.  It came at a time when I was hurting but I was pushing hard to try to get a PB.  The wait to find out if I have got the PB is killing me.

yeah i suppose you don't realise how valuable a spectator is until you are in an event, and just one bit of cheering can pick you up again.

one thing i just remembered, at events like the geelong half ironman, there have been marquees at the start when you can purchase a big bit of paper/card for like $2 (i think) and there were textas provided to make your own signs. might be a good idea for the marathon next year - encourages the supporters to get into it a bit more. you might already do it, i don't know...

I'm just curious as to why you didn't pickup the "Fastest Novice Female" trophy ?

What defines a "Novice" in the terms of marathon running ? Was there a check box on the entry form ? Maybe it was because you placed, and therefore were not regarded as a novice, even though it was your first, but had obviously put in the required training to have such a great run. Congrats by the way. I was just wondering where the line in the sand was ?

Crowpower is correct, and there have been a number of queries on this topic, so obviously we should try and make it clearer in the future that it is the fastest SARRC member debut marathon. However, I have heard whisper that they may be introducing a trophy for the fastest debut marathon by a non-member next year? only time will tell.

On the results, there were some queries over the results and so they haven't gone up yet...better to get them right the first time then have 1030 angry emails.

Thanks guys, that thought did come to mind, yes "SARRC Novice" would solve the issue.
I did search the web site for it too, but maybe it is only on the entry form, or I wasn't searching hard enough.

The novice thing has been going on for at least ten years it seems. Back in 1999 my brother lined up for his trophy after a 2:49 as the fastest novice and they gave it to someone who ran slower.

At least I know now, 10 years later, why he didn't get the gong...

The fastest debut marathon should got to the fastest debut marathoner, regardless of club colours.

I understand completely Simlin, I for one would be very upset if my excellent performance of 2:03:58 for the marathon was stuffed up and shown on the results as something horribly slow like 3:51:00. Maybe you can check and fix that for me before you post the results.

Agreed, and if an open novice award is created for next year the term 'novice' should be scrapped as it is misleading.  The definition of novice includes "someone who has not yet acquired the skills and experience needed to qualify for a trade, a career, a profession, or a sphere of life."

I know Ultra runners that have clocked up 30-40  ultras but have never run a marathon. Technically they are not "novices" at the marathon distance, yet if they entered it would be a debut Marathon.

There are lots of fast half marathoners that have been running great times year after year who would rank highly if they moved to the marathon distance, they have a great base and experience and technically aren't "novices" either, but if entered it would be a debut too.

A true "novice" to me is a battler who has worked their way up from zero to the Marathon distance to fulfill a dream. An award best kept within a club as the runners history is usually known.

The fastest debut marathon should be just that regardless of background. Megan, you will just have to change names for next year.
