This is an update to an earlier forum thread 'Byron Bay runners' posted towards the end of last year, looking for a running club in Byron Bay.

Are you living in- or visiting Byron Bay & want to have some other runners to train with? I'm a middle-long distance running coach (previously with Caboolture Road Runners) who's recently moved to Byron, and am organising an informal running group in Byron - aimed primarily at senior- to masters age runners (beginners to experienced runners).

If you are interested, come along to the surf club at 6am Thursday mornings (lighthouse side). We usually do some kind of speed-endurance work (1km intervals, hills and/or repeats along the beach). As an informal group (without public liability insurance) runners train at their own risk. Runners can do as much or as little as they like... and it's all for FREE!

Check the last few postings of this forum to find out what/where the next session will be & if you'd like to find out more, either send me a message through CR, or just come along :Big Grin:

hi there, keen as.  i do a bit of speed work by myself on monday thursday but would love to do some with other people (although i am not sure if everyone would classify my speed work as speed work!).  What type of work are you doing?
I live in byron hills and will drag some others along with me if i can, any chance of starting earlier?  I have 2 kiddies and work on those days too.
see you on the 5th either way

Hi,
I'm also keen to join in some speed sessions, Tuesday works for me, but also interested in 5.45am start, that way can be home in time to make lunches, do drops offs etc etc.  Looking forward to it!

Hi Everyone
Great to hear you're all so keen! I'll run sessions on both Tuesdays and Thursdays - and can definetly do earlier (the only limiting factor is daylight really ... I've been running around at 6am with a headtorch on for at least two weeks now, feeling faintly ridiculous!). So, if we aim for 5.45 on Tues 5 April, and see how that fits with everyone's schedules.

The initial session will probably be something along the lines of : warm-up and plyometric drills followed by 90sec intervals with declining recovery time (1min, 50sec, 40s, 30s) as I don't know how close we all are yet in pace (to do intervals by distance with timed recovery). It will also be good to find out what your running goals are for this season, so that I can plan some sessions to help with this.

Looking forward to meeting you all in a couple of weeks!

You lot are in very good hands.  RunningPsych is an asset to Byron.  I'd expect to see some chicks down there getting much faster soon.

Oh and guys, drag your sorry butts down there too.  Don't let the girls do all of the work and start beating you.  Go coach!

Hi Everyone
Just a reminder that Byron track training sessions will start from Tuesday next week (5 April). For anyone not sure where the sports fields are (sorry MadamRunning, can't seem to send a PM to you)- we will be on the sports fields to the left of the tennis courts (which are just down from Byron Bowls club, next to Cowper St). There's lots of parking available, water and possibly toilets (not sure if they unlock them that early). I'll be there from 5.40'ish, ready to start warm-up around 5.45.
The session itself will probably last no more than 30 mins, to give us time to warm-down and (more importantly) socialise! I will continue to run sessions over the school holidays (got to do something to cope with all those chocolate eggs!). Looking forward to meeting you next week

That should be pretty easy to find, even a directionally challenged person like me shouldn't get lost (I'm staying in Lawson St).

See you on Easter Thursday :)

Lots of rain in byron today; I'll still be running sessions if its raining (will only cancel if there's lightning). At least its great conditions for barefoot running!

Simon and I ran at the track this morning - and it was like running in a paddyfield!
So, very sorry everyone  but I'll have to postpone thursday's track session.
However, if anyone's interested in doing 500m reps on the road (beachside footpath adjacent to lawson st)
let's meet at the surf club by 5.45am

Is that the lighthouse side? I'll look out for you (but if you also want to find me, I'll be wearing a Caboolture Road Runners black and gold running vest). I'd also be keen to go a bit longer - I haven't measured it, but we could try from SLSC to end Clarke's carpark? Otherwise, we could run through along Cowper St from sports fields to Seaview Road (which is 1km exactly, pretty flat)... see what everyone feels like tomorrow! See you by the surf club from 5.45am tomorrow - looking forward to it!

Hi All

I'm planning to run Tuesday sessions on the grass track, which will generally be shorter reps (200's - 800's) aimed at improving leg speed, plus some form drills. This is a good venue for barefoot running too, which will also help improve form. Anyone who's interested :  session will start at 5.45am (for warm-up) and finish up by 6.45. In case of wet weather/boggy conditions, might take it to the beach, tides permitting (but I'll post up the night before). But normally, meet at the cricket net end of the sports fields, just off Cowper St.

Thursdays will be for speed-endurance through longer reps (1km'ers - 2km'ers) on the road (otherwise we'll get dizzy!) and/or hill reps. Thursday sessions if we meet at the surf club (lighthouse side) at 5.45am and go from there. I think it would be good to throw in a 3km time trial at the track one Thursday in every month (to get a good indication of training progress, without shredding it up too much!). Does this fit with what everyone wants?

I'm still finding my own way around Byron so please post any suggestions for 1km, 1.5km and 2km flat and rolling hill reps (preferably traffic free or at least quiet'ish) and I'll go and explore!

Can't wait for the next training session; no longer feeling a lonely distance runner!!!

rolling hills ....coopers shoot, parking at the turn off from bangalow rd (mostly car free and spectacular views in the morning, km repeats in the sewerage treatment works (marked on the ground just as you go down the hill from the caravan park entrance)ends at the entrance to beach near tennis courts toward alcorn street.  for a nasty hill ....natural lane, past the turn off to broken head turn off on the right,  and for those who like off road .... seven mile road over to seven mile and you can run down to whites and braes and also a horrible hill down the bottom ( we call donkey hill as it has donkeys in there!).
supa stoked to have a group to do the mean stuff with!
see you on thursday

Meanwhile, I'll keep thursday sessions in town for the next couple of weeks/school hols for the people who are just visiting Byron.
Thursday 5.45am surf club..... be there, or be (probably in bed, happily asleep... but definetly not getting faster!)

Newsflash! For anyone interested in some speedwork (short intervals)...the Byron sports fields are open, so there will be a track training session tomorrow (Tuesday 12 April) : Byron Bay Sports Field (between Midddleton- & Cowper St).
Meet at the Middleton St (cricket field) end; starting at 5.45am (warm-up), finishing by 7am (latest).
All welcome, in fact, more the merrier (come share the pain!)

Training session for Thurs 14 April : long hill repeats

Meet at SLSC, 5.45am for warm-up jog over to Paterson St for long hill repeats up to the water tower.

Guaranteed spectacular views!

Also, some good news on access to a running track for evening training sessions.... I have heard back from council who have said that the Ewingsdale sports centre will have an athletics track available to us, from the end of this year. I will be putting in an offical application for this, as soon as applications are possible. So watch this space!

Looks like it's going to be a bit squishy at the track tomorrow.... still meet at the sports fields (6am, rather than 5.45am - need that 15min lie-in in the school holidays!), and we might have to take it to the beach (tide permitting) or else short hill repeats up lighthouse road to (palm valley?) carpark.
See you tomorrow (bring your own snorkel!)

Hope to be there tomorrow, though with each day of Bluesfest the body is becoming more and more wrecked. Its worth it but  :)

Haven't managed to miss a morning's run yet. Cruised through a lovely 18k today. Discovered a new pathway which I was enjoying until I saw a sign warning people about brown snakes  :shok:
