2009 Glenbrook Australia Day Fatathon - 26/01/2009
#1
Posted 08 November 2008 - 10:08 AM
Start: Ranger hut, Glenbrook/Blue Mountains NP
Finish: Causeway at bottom of Glenbrook Gorge for a swim and a drink
Distance: Range of distances to suit. Maps attached for 20, 32 and 43km (soon)
Food/Drink: Water and maybe some other drinks will be placed at two spots - Pigsah Ridge/Nepean Lookout intersection and Euroka Clearing. BYO any food you need out on the track.
Course Description 43km distance:
Steep down and uphill to commence on roadway, before using the single track adjacent to Oaks Fire Trail. Consistent uphill to Oaks Picnic area before taking the undulating fire trail out to Nepean Lookout. Turn around point and back to Pigsah Ridge Fire Trail intersection where the water drop will be. Single track out/back along Pigsah with first part being down and climb back out. Return to Fire Trail and back to Oaks Camping Area. Back down Oaks Fire Trail to Bennetts Ridge. Follow single track Bennetts Ridge into Euroka Clearing. As you come thru the locked gate turn right and follow grassed hill down and over a foot bridge to Daruk Campground. Water stop here, then a billy goat climb out of Euroka. Single track to Portal Trail and do an out and back to Portal and Railway Lookout. This has a decent climb. On return, take single trail at road intersection back towards Glenbrook Causeway for a beer and a swim.
The course is not overly difficult and you can fashion a distance to suit your training. Lots of short hills to keep you working, but majority of the course is very runnable. This should be about a week or so prior to Megalong run and is a good training run for 6FT.
We had a great day out last year with about 20 in attendance. The wearing of the national flag on your kit is compulsory. Once again Advance Australia Fair will be played and sung to commence the day. No miming allowed from our British cousins.
I am planning to get out and map the full course this Friday. Will post google map and elevation chart for anyone interested. Having some trouble uploading course maps. Will have them up on the thread soon.
Hope to see you out there.

When: Australia Day, 7am Monday 26/01/2009

By my reckoning from the start to finish is a winding 900m. I'll takethat option and watch the food and drinks at the watering hole

I'm a probable Rod, really enjoyed myself last year. More than likely the 30k, hopefully there will be some other people around my pace again.
I will endeavour to learn the anthem properly this time, especially considering I've just been accepted as an Aussie citizen (pending ceremony)

I've got a couple of low km runners and non-technical mountain biker keen to come along just for the sake of participating and being in the bush for australia day. Will the set-up be ok for them?
Looking forward to it. Let me know if you need any help.

The course for beginner MTBers will be fine. They can either go out up the single trail (not too technical), or follow Oaks trail, which is wide open dirt road. The track out to Nepean Lookout is undulating, but again wide open trail. Dont send them down Pigsah Ridge as it gets rocky in parts.
Coming back, send them into Euroka on Bennetts trail. This is a real cruisy single trail that they would enjoy. Once they get into Euroka, they will have to push their bikes out on the road (fairly steep), but is only about 1km. From there they could ride out to Portal/Tunnel View Lookouts (another steepish hill), but the ride back downhill, would be fast, hang on tight, type of fun. Then back into Causeway. All up about 32km, and probably take them around 2-3 hours at an easy pace.
I will PM you re some help. The MTB will be finished early, so might be able to help with setting up some drinks etc down at the causeway. Just a matter of bringing an esky down from the top so when the runners come in, we can kick back with a few coldies at the creek.

Why try and reinvent the wheel? If I can hack as much time off my PB as BD did last year then your beers are going to taste just fine.

Good stuff Terry. I will be camping overnight and mountain biking the course the arvo before to mark the course with some ribbons. We are going to try and camp in Daruk campground where the aid spot will be, just before the climb out. Dont forget a few beers for the evening entertainment.
Brick, I reckon we may get a good look at Sarge's form out at SMC next Sunday. I will have spies all over the course reporting back to me. He might even wave to us when we pass him on the turnarounds
Anyone that is keen to come out, can you let me know on the thread. Just have to work out sufficient water drops for the day as it gets closer.

Trailpuddin/Fred are organising an empty esky with ice at the start. That way you can bring some drinks, put them on ice and they will be down at the causeway when we finish. It saves the dreaded walk up to the car to get cold drinks. We will throw some soft drinks in, just have to BYO the hard stuff you are keen on.
